Rreign

(REIN)

When Subetans first came to Veta, they didn't realize they were in for a big surprise - literally. For hundreds upon hundreds of years, the lake and its surrounding areas were home to the largest dragon known on Subeta - the rreign. Despite their incredible size and rather intimidating appearance, the rreigns proved to be more curious about the Subetans than anything else, and some particularly brave Subetans set out to befriend these creatures. Some of the rreigns proved to be very friendly, and they even helped their new human companions plow the fields and till the land.

Rreigns are very large, though they can vary in size. The smallest tend to still be around 750 lbs (340 kg), with some of the largest weighing 2000 lbs (907 kg) - almost a ton! The smaller, stumpier rreigns may only be 10 feet (3 m) long, but their tails alone can be an extra 2-3 feet (.6-.9m) in length, making even the smallest amongst them large and formidable. Female rreigns are often larger than the males, in both length and weight. Rreigns are egg-layers that mate for life, and a female rreign will lay around 3-4 large eggs in the spring that will finally hatch in the early fall, often right in time for Fireside! The male and female will raise their brood together, and it is not unusual for large, social family groups to form. Rreigns are quite trusting of their Subetan friends, and they will often let people approach their babies at this age. Most Vetans respect the rreign and would never dream of hurting one of their offspring - especially as it might anger the now-peaceful Red Rreign, so legend says. Rreigns are omnivorous, and although they are quite fond of (raw) meat, they will gladly munch on flowers, grass, vegetables, fruit, and even tree bark.

Despite their huge size, rreigns are actually quite the wonderful companion. Subetans keep them similar to how one might keep a hikei or bovyne - a large pen for them to relax in works quite well, and a stone or brick barn or lean-to lined with hay for shelter will keep them warm on a cool night. They will gladly help to plow fields and harvest crops - though they might sample a few veggies here and there. They are sometimes said to be 'silly' or 'goofy', due to their easy-going, playful natures, and many rreigns do not seem to realize just how large they are!

Famous rreigns
The Red Rreign is the most well-known rreign in Subetan history, and the story of how he went from vengeful beast to helpful companion is celebrated every year during Fireside.
