Wyllop

(WHY-lop)

There are very few creatures on Subeta that are small enough to fit in your hands, yet are as inquisitive and intelligent as a child. Without a doubt, the pet that best demonstrates big things come in small packages is the wyllop. One of Subeta's smallest creatures is also one of its smartest; wyllops have been known to beat even the smartest Subetans at mazes, solve color and shape puzzles, and can figure out just about any sort of lock - as long as it doesn't require thumbs!

Wyllops are found all throughout Subeta, from the Saherimos desert to the Arctic Frost to the city streets of Centropolis. They are quite small, with the average wyllop only being about 12 inches (30 cm) long, not including their tail. Their tails, however, can nearly double their length when added on! They weigh around 23 oz (650 grams), and have disproportionately large ears to their body. Despite this small size, they display incredible problem-solving intelligence, as well as the ability to communicate with each other with both a variety of vocalizations and body language. Wyllops live in large social groups, known as a rabble, with the females taking care of the young, known as wyllpups, and the males doing the majority of the guarding and social grooming. Hearing is definitely their best sense, although smell is a close second. Taste, however, is sorely lacking - for they will eat just about anything!

Wyllops have been domesticated for hundreds of years; early exterminators would catch them from peoples' homes and keep the ones with the most interesting spots or patterns of stripes as pets. Soon, breeding became popular, and with their naturally gentle and curious natures, they quickly became a popular pet for children and adults alike. Despite their natural want to eat anything in front of them, they should be fed a diet of good, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and the occasional bit of protein. Wyllops do well with mental stimulation, and owners should be willing to provide them with things like puzzle games or mini obstacle courses to run to keep them active and happy.
