Meneb (Darkside)

Meneb, now more commonly referred to as Darkside or The Darkside, makes up much of the Western lands on the Southern Continent. It is mainly barren and rocky area, noticeably red in hue due to high levels of iron and sulfur in the soil.

This area has heavy volcanic activity. Several smaller eruptions per week are not uncommon, and Meneb experiences regular earthquakes and tremors. The volcanoes in this area constantly vent toxic gasses -- While this is devastating to the natural flora and fauna of the area, the gasses also have magical properties. Several refineries have been setup to filter the gasses as needed, and you can find the refined magic in many everyday products, such as potions and elixirs.

The climate of Meneb could easily be described as muggy and undesirable. The constant heat of the volcanoes, combined with a layer of ash-cloud working as insulation, makes for a sweltering daily average temperature.

People

Historically, the Darkside was home to indigenous Subetans known as the Ji-Meneb (in their language, literally "born of Meneb"), however their populations have dwindled significantly due to interbreeding with other indigenous Subetan populations, as well as Humans. Those that remain have almost entirely abandoned the Darkside due to the increasingly hostile climate, and have integrated into mainstream society.

The Ji-Meneb shared a similar appearance to other indigenous population of Subeta -- Humanoid in appearance, with longer, pointed ears, however they also typically have horns (varying in size and style), and a green tint to the sclera of their eyes. This tint is caused by a protective membrane formed over the surface of the eye, originally evolved to protect the delicate eye from the dust and grit of the Darkside. A notable example of Ji-Meneb citizen is Quentin, the questgiver in nearby Shadowglen.

At this time, the Darkside is sparsely populated. Those that choose to make a home there are usually refinery workers, or those that have special interest in the magical properties of the area.

Government

Officially a colony of Centropolis, the Darkside is bound by the same laws and regulations as much of the Western Continent. However, because the landscape is inhospitable and the settlements are few and far between, it remains largely unpoliced and ungoverned, and so settlers are often forced to vigilantism in regards to protection of themselves and their property.

Though many attempts to form a stronger military and government presence have been made, they have been rebuffed on every occasion by footmen of The Dark Goddess, Maleria, who has chosen the area as her residence.

Culture

Because of their widespread integration with other populations, the rituals and traditions of the Ji-Meneb have been largely forgotten or tied so closely with similar traditions of other native civilizations that they are indecipherable. It is said that many of the traditions of Morostide evolved from Ji-Meneb traditions regarding rites of death and burial.
