State of the Union User Shops: One Month Later
I can't say there weren't a few bumps along the way, but I'd like to start off by saying I think the release of the new user shops has been one of our most successful in a while. There weren't very many, but we've been able to fix most of the bugs that weren't caught during the initial testing period (including at least a couple that seem to have miraculously fixed themselves with no intervention from us at all!), and have tweaked interfaces here and there based on your feedback, which we will continue to do.
As was said when we first announced this project, one of the major reasons we were revamping the user shops now (when, to be honest, it's been on our to-do list for a few years) was due to the 502 and 504 errors that have been plaguing the site since our move from Rackspace to AWS. While the new shops didn't completely solve the problem, we did see the volume of 5xx errors reduced by more than 75%, which we were cautiously optimistic about. They were clearly still a problem, but we started to have an end in sight (keep an eye out for a post from Keith about how we've seen almost no 5xx errors at all in the past few days since the removal of pusher.js - which was a big surprise!).
The new user shops have relieved so much strain on the servers and the database. Even buying from the legacy shops still being available via shop search has had a much smaller impact than we initially anticipated, so I'm happy to announce to you all that the legacy shops will remain in shop search results indefinitely!
Last but not least, gallery item limits have been raised once again, to allow 7,500 unique items per gallery for everyone, and 10,000 unique items for Gold Account users. These, along the current shop limits of 2,000 and 2,500, are likely to be the final item limits. That said, we will continue to monitor the new system and make adjustments as we see fit.
Thank you all so much for sticking with us through these tough times. You guys are why we do what we do!

what i wish is that non ga inventories could see more than a measly 100 items. i frag shit constantly and the item visibility limit is a mighty annoyance. like was stated below, we can vend 250 items but only see 100 of them at a time. not that i ever expect it to change, i just want to complain about it. it sucks, subeta.

First of all, FUNNY news title. ^^ Change is always an anxious thing... and I worried this shop switch would take forever, and would drag on and be a big issue, but it really seems to have been rather smooth, and you guys have raised the limits relatively fast, from expectations. Nice work!
Thanks for all your hard work, guys! :) I was originally hesitant about the shop transition and thought it was going to be a difficult process, but you guys did such a great job providing us with added tools to make the transition easier and quickly increasing limits after seeing data come in. The site has been working great recently. :)

Thank you guys for all your hard work on this :) Although I am sad I can't jampack my shop, I understand the reasoning behind it. Bravo for a job well done. :D Now onto cults! ^_~

Yay for gallery items increase (more than I wished for, but I'm still going to be selective on what I put in my gallery). Was hoping for an increase in shop items, to be honest, but, here's hoping for a change of mind.
BUT, what I really want is for my gallery to be shown by Item ID Number (can we have that back?). We had a choice with the old system, either alpha or ID number. Beta tester... ME ME ME.
claps YOU ALL DID A WONDERFUL JOB!!!!

I like the new shops, their easier to use.
Question about the legacy shops. Is the information for my Making a living achievement still available? I was 804,000,088 / 1,000,000,000

first off-- the title of this is fabulous. secondly, thank you guys for keeping us updated! This is great news! I love seeing things like this happen because it reminds me that this website is here to stay and not going anywhere for a long time, and that makes me happy :)
@grelca - as a former software developer myself (I worked on the first release of cellular phone in the US) just wanted to let you and the other developers know that I am extremely impressed with how quickly and how well the new shop/gallery project has gone. You all did a truly amazing job under very difficult circumstances. The decrease in 502/504 errors and in lag is wonderful. And then discovering the problem with pusher.js and replacing it with new code as well! (Computers always find some way to surprise you, don't they?) You guys are the best. Subeta staff, their responsiveness and the way they truly care about the users and the site are why you have built a community of loyal users. You guys are why we do what we do - love and enjoy our time on Subeta, no matter what. Thank you.
And that Troll! Releasing him in the middle of all the commotion was genius. A great lesson in community building and working together to achieve big goals.

That's funny you guys find it a surprise- I've had issues with pusher.js since it was implemented and judging from the forums I wasn't the only one.

Duly note I am NOT staff but just someone who has played on this site for ovah eight years! Officially the bug catching had NO correlation!

The galleries are much more simplified. I would die of happiness (and disassemble my old gallery) if we could have 45K in them and our achievements back.

@Squid Believe it or not, there used to be no limit to vending, so as long as you had the tokens, you could vend as much as you wanted. And while it has been useful for my shops to resell items, I also make sure that the items I need, like food, wardrobe, one-use battle items, plushies and beanbags are also in easy reach, especially when trying to save sP. You only vend 500 items per day max, so that's 1000 tokens. It's a lot more useful than you might think, and honestly, it really isn't that much, as I do often get multiples of one object. It helps keep my shop inventory varied because, while I do restock from NPC shops, I only restock from about a half dozen or so, and there are a lot more items out there than those few rare ones in the shops. It was a shock to many of us that the vending limit was so low, but in the end I'm thankful. The currency doesn't take up space, and it helps me to save more tokens for TS and BH restocks.
Anyways... I am disappointed that the shop limit still is very low, especially for those without a GA. I'd like to see that go up to 3000/3500, because I don't want to have more than one shop. I understand people don't like to wait a little bit longer for autopricing, even though it's still faster than in the old shops, and I'm not complaining, or whining at least; I just like to have everything in one place, and since I don't vend often, I still have to wait a week before vending so I can sell the extras.

As if I'm not addicted and had a choice ?

The only thing left I'd like to see is moving stuff within shops/galleries to other shops or galleries and vice versa, rather than shop/gallery to inventory to another shop/gallery.

@Squid
Now that is an idea I can get behind, Its so frustrating that we can vend 250 items, but can only see 100, makes no sense really. Im not an avid fragger right now either, but I feel like fragging is a good alternative if you can't sell everything or don't care to sell. [This is also with the hopes they make sure to keep putting stuff in the crystal shop] Right now though I can totally understand your frustration with you being a seller over a fragger, and how the limit effects you. Hopefully they will tweak it more in the future!

nice! hopefully the limit for galleries will increase a bit, as i'm about to have about 400 items left when i'll be finished moving everything on my main gallery xD
@_blackwolf_2009_ the link doesn't show anymore, but the page itself still works if you go directly to it. :)

And @kyuriin you can move the items from old shop directly to the new shop, which should be in that guide.

I would also like to mention. Since the changeover. Although I have had my share of 502/504's on a daily basis, especially while trying to access my gallery. I am experiencing a lot less problems and is able to open my legacy gallery with very minimal to no 502/504 errors. Thank you for making an effort to try and alleviate this issue ~ ^.^ ~

@Nemui
Yeah, fragging did cross my mind even as I was typing out my comment. I guess I've just never been that in to fragging, unless there's something I -need- Not a casual fragger. Of course I'm not -suggesting- that vending be done away with, I'd like to do more of it (Maybe if inventories reflected the amount of items we could vend per day, that would be nice) only wondering if fragging is the only answer then for vending extras.

It was a ROYAL pain switching over a large gallery ... but if it help you guys ... I guess it is worth it.
@Squid
I really hope vending doesn't go away because of shop limits, I use vending for fragging. I am not a big seller, but I have noticed the crystal shop is getting more and more attention so a huge majority of the stuff i yanked from my shop went into fragging. Vending still has a use even if it isn't for reselling, I know thats what you use yours for, and thats cool, but I would be livid if they got rid of vending, since that is how I make my crystals, and im sure im not the only one.

The current shop limit is where it will stay? My only real issue with it is that I only get a GA 1-2 times a year and the rest of the year I shove items from questing into the shops and autoprice everything when I get a GA. If this is the case, I feel backed into a wall about having to have a GA to get rid of items otherwise. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

@kyuriin
but just as a summary, the old shops were causing some server problems so they were rewritten into a new system. the old shops are now called legacy shops and you can't add or edit them, but you can remove things from them.

As kbbob said, indefinitely don't mean permanently. I think eventually after people finally stop getting money from their shops they will start the move process over to one system. So give it time!
@grelca
Any chance we will be able to get our sales and sP totals from the old shops? I was going to keep my old shop around for it but then wanted to add it in my new one and I can't get it at all now. Would like to be able to gather that info.

I feel like with shop limits where they are vending is no longer an option. I still have quite a bit from my hoard to try to move over to a new shop and I've been doing it about a page at a time whenever I sell a hundred items and there is still ... Well way more pages to go. I have opened up a second shop so I can dump the items I get from questing in there and still the item count goes up more than it goes down. I mean a week or so of vending would fill up another shop easily. So is vending just done with?

i've been on a small hiatus and i have no idea what's going on. why can't i edit the prices of my shop? i had to create a new one and now i'm removing aaaall the items from the old shop to the inventory and then to the new shop...
It's great to hear that this change has had the positive impact that you hoped it would! Thanks so much for your hard work and transparency through this process! That's really what I continue to love (and be amazed by, tbh) about this site - the staff is honest, forthcoming, and seems to genuinely care about the site and its users. Thanks again!!

Thank you for all your help! Most of the bugs I came across were comparatively minor, and they were all dealt with. This is one of the biggest revamps I've seen Subeta do, and it's probably one of the smoothest.
I will concede to being a little disappointed with the final shop limits, though. I had my fingers crossed for another raise. With restocking and moving things from the old shops, I'm pretty tight against the limits as they are, and I still have about 2000 items left in an old shop. I suppose I'll just have to be more proactive with repricing, rather than letting things sit there, which I'd anticipated I'd have to do anyway.

I'm happy to hear that the legacy shops will still be able to sell, if only for those few CWs and older items sitting around with their price tags in the millions. Good to know I have the time to save up. :)
I like the update, I like that galleries got an increase over shops. I hated dealing with a huge shop to price! [my personal opinion i know everyone is different]
The only thing I don't agree with is the fact that legacy shops are now staying indefinitely. I know you can't add to them or reprice them which is a good thing. But honestly though, whats the
point of rolling out something new, just to keep the old hanging on, just because it isn't causing issues like you thought it would. I personally think its just going to make the whole switch over take longer, I would rather we just get put on one new unified shop set up. The old shops are done with, why keep them hanging on?
Other than that, yes the site has been running so much better the last few days and i love it!

The site seems to be working much better these days. Thanks for working on the errors - good job.

Volume of 5xx errors indeed significantly reduced but let's keep our fingers crossed that it remains that way until it's completely eradicated. Keep up the work that you guys are doing! Love the new shops - they're great. :) Thanks so much!

@shaunathedead Staff said there are no plans for categories in shops (it was mentioned somewhere on the staff posts page).

Glad that this change was successful, especially now that item limits are very appealing!
Thank you for working hard in making the site a better place! :D

Yay for the good news but I'm honestly not amused with the shops staying that low.
Looks like actively playing again won't be for anywhere soon.
Looks like actively playing again won't be for anywhere soon.

people will eventually migrate their items over to the new shops because 1. they can't add new things to legacy shops and 2. they can't change the price of things in legacy shops. so keeping things in there isn't going to help them sell their stuff. and so what if they don't move them over to the new shops, "buying from the legacy shops still being available via shop search has had a much smaller impact than we initially anticipated" so it isn't going to hurt things too badly. I'm sure if it does become a problem, they may change their mind about this, but at this moment, it isn't a big enough problem to worry about
