'Bandit!' the boy said, stooping to grab the kitten by its waist before hoisting it up to his chest. Christopher walked to the bed and, after dropping the cat beside him, he threw himself on the clean white sheets. He sighed, stroking Bandit under the chin with one hand, the other behind his own head, which in turn was propped on a plump pillow. He stared blankly at the ceiling as the cat purred, a sense of loneliness overwhelming him.

He must have drifted off, for when he woke, his bedroom door was ajar, the cat nowhere to be seen, and the only source of light came from the flickering streetlight outside his window, casting his white room in a hazy shade of amber. But something wasn't right. He could hear a slight sound, a continuous hush of steam. Now you may not think a boiling kettle makes such an unsettling sound, but when you live all alone but for a cat, and no friends of yours share a key, the sound of a boiling kettle in the evening can be very unsettling indeed.

Christopher bolted up, but dressed in a loose grey sweater, underpants and oversized wool boot socks, with his fair brown hair disheveled from restless slumber, he wasn't a particularly fearful opponent for whomever was using his kitchen.

He sleepily called out Bandit's name to no response, and began to shuffle bleary-eyed towards the door, panic infiltrating his body. But before he took a second step, the door swung open. "Hey Chris," came the voice of his lover.

Christopher stepped backwards, falling onto his bed. He scrambled backwards as the other boy strode across the threshold, his shoes heavy on the white wooden floorboards. 'I made you a coffee,' he offered with a slight shrug, but Christopher was still startled. He reached the top of his bed, and muttered, 'What are you doing here?'

His cell phone vibrated beside him. The glance was all it took for him to let his guard down. He saw only the time - it was past midnight - before he felt the other boy's weight on top of him. 'Dawson, stop,' he said, turning his face away and pushing the other boy's torso with both hands. Dawson resisted, and Christopher could feel the other boy's breath against his neck.

'How did you even get in here?' Dawson sheepishly murmured something about stealing a key. Christopher sighed, exasperated with the older boy. 'You can't just storm in here whenever you please, Dawson.'

Dawson laughed, for he knew there was nothing Christopher could do to stop him from doing anything he wanted. 'I've been working, Chris,' he said. 'You know how it gets in my line of work.'

Dawson kissed Christopher's neck. 'Come on baby, you can't tell me you haven't missed this!' He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a tan and toned chest. 'It's been weeks, Dawson,' Christopher said, his voice cracking. He had missed this, which was the problem. 'Why didn't you take me with you? You didn't even say goodbye...'

He'd been miserable since Dawson had left, but now that he felt the boy's body intertwined with his own, he could finally relax a little. He finally gave into Dawson's kisses.

The two boys spent the night together, and the kitten drank from the discarded cup of coffee near the door, and it seemed like things would go back to normal. At least for one night.
