There is a sacred shrine, hidden deep within the tea house gardens that acts as a harbor for mortals to move on to the spirit realm. This shrine is guarded by a very large, very intimidating fu dog- The Eastern Fu. The Eastern Fu is one of the very few with the ability to travel between dimensions. As such he is in charge of keeping deities from coming out of, and guiding souls through, the next dimension- Limbo.

Limbo is the dimension that exists in between the mortal and spirit realms. The soul's journey through limbo acts as a method of cleansing, and must be completed before it may pass on to the next dimension. Every journey is different, everyone experiences limbo differently, and this journey must be completed alone except for the company of this big, black, shaggy, canine.

If they manage to reach the end of limbo, the soul will be met by Torii, the guardian of the spirit realm, and be guided into the spirit realm and the afterlife. The Eastern Fu and Torii have clashed on several occasions, when one or the other gets too close to the entry point of either's dimensions. Their battles are so fierce they have been known to tear holes in the fibers of existence. ( It's a common belief that their fighting is the source of thunder. )

The Eastern fu is cared for by the spirit master, who must make sacrifices to him daily, or else risk having him cease guarding the shrine. Families of the deceased may also bring offerings to her to offer up on their behalf, as they may not approach him themselves due to his hostility, in hopes of finding favor with the fu and ensure their loved one makes it to the spirit realm safely. Despite the Eastern Fu's benevolent job, he is ferocious, and has been known to devour individuals and curse entire bloodlines. Due in part to the grim nature of his job as well as his appearance, he is often viewed as the embodiment of death
