Sumi lives with her small family on the tea house grounds and serves as the caretaker of the Eastern Shrine. She lights meditation incense, sweeps out dusty tombs, and makes sure that the gods, spirits, and deities, both large and small, that linger around the Tea House receive proper homage. Her biggest job is preparing offerings. She can often be seen burning spirit money or leaving meats, wine and wreaths at different alters.

Due to her small stature, and the sheer size and grandeur of not only her workplace but also the creatures she faces, she employs a horde of spirits to help her get her work done.
