Story

Nila needs no alarm to wake an hour before dawn. Her internal clock is as reliable as the tides that have aided her in claiming top prize for seven straight years in the Deplhi Beach Worldwide Surfing Championship.

She always likes to do a bit of yoga first thing in the morning. She's mastered more simple poses such as downward facing ruffie and is working on the more complicated tutani flipper stretch. She finds the stretches a perfect balance for calming her thoughts and warming her muscles before her real routine gets started.

The engine of her little red car purrs to life with barely a turn of the key. She has selected the palm surfboard from her collection of seven, taking care the supply of wax in the jar she always keeps in her back seat before getting on the road. Traffic is very mild at such an early hour. It also helps that most cars are headed in the opposite direction as Subetans hurry to their jobs in Centropolis.

She times her arrival just right, taking to the water as the sun crests the horizon. There won't be any really impressive waves for a few hours yet but every moment on the water is one she can use to work on her stability.

She's too absorbed in her morning routine to take any notice of those few tourists determined to get some peaceful time on the beach before the morning rush. She tenses her muscles as the first good wave of the day approaches. This is not the sort of water wall that makes for a good competition but it has a decent crest, allowing her to ride out the play of the tide and get a feel for conditions no weather forecast can ever predict.

The next wave is more impressive. When she is sure she has found her center of balance, she maneuvers her body into the trick shapes she's been working on for weeks. Her personal favorite is when she manages to stand on one hand, though even with her well-trained body she can only hold the pose for a few seconds. While she has not had a full wipeout in years, there have been many practice sessions that had to end early because of this challenging trick. She laughs in delight as she rides a noon wave all the way to the beach. A perfect routine. She is so going to make it an eight-year win streak!

She is normally very health-conscious with her food choices but today she decides to indulge a little. She orders the fried shrimp basket and lovely cherry soft-serve at the Beach Shack, savoring the salty with the sweet. She is not the least bit concerned about burning off the calories. Conditions indicate an optimal afternoon for surfing.

She keeps to a few older favorite tricks on the next big wave, pleased that a bit of an audience is gathering. She does the move she calls a reversal tail spin, the one that won her the trophy in her sixth competition year.

"Woo hoo! Nila-Bay! Nila-Bay!"

The young noktoa can't be much older than seven, his beak smeared with what appears to be vanilla ice cream. He flaps his wings and hops up and down in excitement as Nila raises a hand to wave. She never gets tired of applause though she is by no means conceited. She takes the time to hand-write a thank you card to every fan that sends her a letter complimenting her technique or asking for advice on how to get started with surfing.

She surfs until her muscles get that tender ache that tells an athlete it is time to take a break or risk injury. Even when she leaves the water, Nila never finds the beach boring. She carries a very special netting bag that has been spelled against all but the most violent blows. In it, she can fit a full dozen seashells that she takes home and turns into decorations for her house. On some days she is even lucky enough to find a sand dollar, though most of these are smashed before they make it to shore. She has only three whole ones that are kept on little glass stands on a shelf all their own.

When the bag is safely tucked inside a towel in her back seat, she turns her steps toward the path that follows the driftwood fence. She likes to lean on the plank with a little heart carved in the side, looking out on the sun as it sets. Though she knows the next day will be another adventure in sun and surf, it is always a little sad to turn her tail lights on the ocean she loves and drive down the open stretch of highway that will take her home.
