Story

He fills his studio in Centropolis with paintings inspired by Arctic Frost, his homeland and the place his dreams often take him to when he sleeps. There are scenes depicting Melody's joyous face, laughing cybills in the midst of a snowball fight, and plenty of more mellow landscape portraits of fields blanketed in snow and ytiva huts with soft yellow light shining through round windows.

Though his studio is kept at the center of Subeta's artistic culture, it is hard for him to call any one land home. He travels the globe to act as critic for those rising artists wishing to see their work displayed in the Delphi Museum of Modern Art. His own fame is well established and as many as three of his paintings and detailed sketches have been put on display at the Museum in a month. Harvester in Blue has become so well known that there are rumors it will even be granted a permanent display.

The tan shoulder bag he carries is always in his grip and his minion Yuki never leaves his side. Both serve a purpose beyond making a fashion statement. Yuki has an eye for color that allows her to locate whatever paint tube Kit signals for when he is in the midst of a complicated work.

As for the bag, it is Kit's means of communicating with the world.

His little notebook can reveal his great intelligence, ready wit, and thoughtful demeanor but it is also a mark of his handicap. From birth, he has never been able to speak. He knows Subetan and Atebus sign language down to the most abstract symbols but no syllable will ever pass his lips.

Today he has a full schedule. He must meet with a kanis sculptor in the morning, lunch with the acquisition staff of the Museum, take a boat to Omen Islands to oversee the painting of a friendly islander and pirate mural, then be back at the Museum by four for the unveiling of one of his new sketches.

The kanis has promise but is much too liberal with the color orange. Her love of carrots can be expressed with subtle feathering to indicate the feathery leaves on top or even some cracks to give the idea of a carrot's tough skin. Not everything needs to be painted orange.

Lunch is an hour of arguing over seven potential additions with the full knowledge that the Museum only has the floor space for two. At least one of the pieces chosen is in the top three Kit voted for. His interpreter signs his pleasure to the others seated at the table, earning him a few grateful smiles. The input of a true artist is invaluable.

He's actually quite impressed with the mural. The painters were chosen from among natives of both Omen Island and Port Plunder, leading him to believe he would be looking at stick figures in grass skirts and blobs with eye patches. The two artists who won the honor have some real talent. He can almost smell the fish on Jacques' breath.

The familiar settings of the Museum are soothing and it is always a pleasure to receive compliments on his work. He stays even after the tiny appetizers have all been consumed and the investors have gone back to their condos in Saggitarius Heights. An old devonti stops to join him in admiring his detailed sketch of a kanis running beside Veta Lake.

"I'm such a fan of his work. It's like he captures motion on paper so that you can see the kumos running and hear him panting. I just want to throw him a ball!"

Kit smiles, points to his sketch, then makes the symbol for self. The devonti's eyes widen. '

Oh, my! I've heard the stories that you couldn't speak but I never imagined...forgive me. I certainly don't mean to be rude. It is such an honor meeting you. I wonder if I might have your autograph?"

All she has on her is the wrinkled napkin she got at lunch but didn't need. She saw no point in wasting the paper and is now quite glad for that decision. Kit can barely keep up with writing as she launches into questions about his work and his life.

"I'm sure you must get this all the time, but where does your muse hail from?"

He smiles at the image in his head of a studio littered with wrappers from Quick Bites and a spectacular sound system striped with blue paint. Blue is sort of a color theme for any item he deems ugly in its original form. Orange can be overdone. Blue never can.

In truth, music often inspires him to paint. He can crank the volume up high or have it as a whisper in the background, whatever suits his mood. He only listens to songs that contain no lyrics, as he finds words distracting.

There are advantages to silence. He has the time to think of his reply before writing it, allowing him to appear charming and mysterious as the oddball in his mind shakes a bushy tail to the rhythm of a classical jazz number.
