"Hmmm, hmmm... nah, no. This just won't do." The young Torrey shook his head and began disassembling the pile of brass and gears on his counter. "Something's missing. I know I can get this." He scanned the room, looking at various scraps, there had to be the right pieces here. A bent gear, fixable, but not worth the time, a fairly nice looking escapement, some balance wheels missing weights, and a bunch of scraps of metal, Kit would have to visit the Recycle Beast again. He knew the guy was friendly, but the guy's size was intimidating to the small creature.
"Aha!" Kit shouted in a raspy, but higher pitched voice. "This will get me into Yun Industries for sure!" Hours of tinkering passed, and the last pieces of transparent cloth and brass aesthetics and his crawling companion Kaboodle came to life. This early, he thought, the very fact that it functioned was quite a feat to be proud of. It couldn't fly yet, though it was an Illumis in form. It carried itself on considerably rickety legs, but it was, indeed, carrying itself.
"Perfect!" He grinned. "Well, okay, not perfect, but a start. It runs, but look at the emissions." He rattled off to himself, the mechanical creature was smoking, and he knew the way the fuel source was crammed into the machinery, it wouldn't function for long periods of time, but it was enough to have as a demonstration.
--------------------
The little critter's heart was pounding as his keeper led him into the skyscraper filled with brass and steam. The magnificence of the structure made the little Torrey's eyes grow to dinner plates. He was awestruck as he pulled the little wagon with his creation to Isaac's office. The creature's heart was now in his throat, his body trembling a bit. This was it. This was his moment. He had to overcome his nerves, this wasn't just any conversation, he had to look confident in what he had made.
"Aherm... H-hello, Mister Yun. I-I'm." He takes a breath.
"Go on, young Torrey. I'm listening." The pins and pistons in the steamdroid's face contorted his mouth into a compassionate smile. Kit looked to his keeper who nodded reassuringly.
"M-my name's Kit. I'm" His digits were clamped tight enough to crush stones. "I-I came here today to present you with my design. I've created m-my own working prototype of a Steamwork Illumis." The Torrey closed his eyes and bit his lower lip, hoping with every fiber of his being that his demonstration was about to work correctly. He pulls the tarp off the wagon and, with the help of his keeper, lifts the machine, a couple purely aesthetic bolts falling off, and places it onto the ground between himself and his audience of one.
He grabs a hold of a sparking device between the wings. After a couple clicks, the machine comes to life. It walks around a small bit, but smoke begins to rise. Kit holds his breath, but his eyes fade to fear as the machine catches fire. Isaac reaches for a nearby extinguisher and puts out the flame, the Illumis a warm pile of nonmoving parts on the floor.
Kit's eyes well up with tears, his heart sinking. He whispers to himself "I... I blew it. I knew I wasn't ready."
"Well. It certainly is a start. I feel like I could teach you a thing or two." Kit's heart stopped, time froze as he attempted to process the information. "My father would greatly appreciate your interest in his work. I would enjoy hiring you on as an apprentice. Perhaps, after you learn a bit of hands-on training with more experienced designers like Garrett and our other employees..." Kit's ears perked at the mention of Garrett. He pondered, though only for a moment, if the friction between the two had passed, or whether they were still uncomfortable with each other.
"...perhaps one day your Illumis could be an original design of your own, and one that rivaled even my father's work. You are obviously bright for your age, and I believe it would be a waste of potential to send you away. What would be your thoughts about starting next week in the company? I can give you a tour, myself, at nine in the morning, but do not be late!"
Kit was at a loss for words. His keeper put a hand on his shoulder, but he only barely felt it. His excitement was welling up like a boiling kettle. All at once the steam became too much and he squeaked with joy. "I-I would love that! Absolutely. Nine o'clock sharp! I-I won't be late!"
That afternoon, Kit spoke more than his keeper had ever seen. The two shared a dessert, alone, before his keeper had found even Kit's good friend Katrynah. The Torrey could barely get to sleep with the excitement, but he knew he must, even if his dreams were filled with sprockets and steam.
