"Greetings, Mr. Koodu!" The vulpine creature nodded as she walked into the adoption center.
"Ah, Li'l Kat! How are you, today?" The man gave a warm grin and scratched Li'l Kat behind the ears.
"I'm fine, how are the residents, today?"
"Alright. Mostly asleep. It's been somewhat slow, today. It's still pretty early, I know, but usually we have visitors from across the globe at these hours."
"We'll just have to keep our spirits up!" Li'l Kat returned the smile with one as warm as her coat.
"I've been at this long enough to know that." The man chuckles, "Still, I feel like we need a good sign, morale has been a bit lower, lately."
"We'll figure something out, maybe it's just a tough time for everyone, and they can't afford it?"
"Who knows?"
"It's not--" The door opens, and the two turn to look at the young couple who entered.
"Hello!" Both Mr. Koodu and Li'l Kat chime, Li'l Kat continues, "Welcome to the Adoption Center, would you like to take a look at our pets?"
"Well, I'm looking for a Mahar. Do you have any?"
"Of course, yes, right this way!"
Li'l Kat leads the couple past some rooms where many pets are still dozing away.
"H-hey" A Kumos greets in a hopeful whisper. Li'l Kat gives a warm smile and waves.
The young man scans the room, a dozen or so Mahars had their names on the wall, a small bit of info describing each. He scoffs. "None of these are particularly bright, and they're all pretty weak." The Jollin reels a bit, biting her tongue.
"E-excuse me?" She keeps her composure as best as possible.
"Have any of them even read a book?"
Li'l Kat blinks and stares at the couple. The young woman shifts a bit uneasily, an apologetic grimace on her face.
"We provide what we can for our pets, but with nearly four hundred pets, it seems unreasonable expect us to afford resources of that sort. We take the pets on trips to the library, but time is limited, and frankly--"
Mr. Koodu intervenes, noticing his assistant's offense. He comes to the hallway.
"What she means is--Li'l Kat, it's okay, I have this, there's some paperwork on the desk we need finished before the mail carrier arrives." Mr. Koodu's voice is soft and nonjudgmental. "What she means is, for all the support we do receive, making ends meet for food is hard enough, even with the free food provisions and Sarah's occasional storytime. Education for four hundred pets is hard to afford. We put a great deal of our funds into keeping up morale, providing food, and broadening interests. For many of these pets, finding who they are after a-a--considerably traumatic--experience, is a huge ordeal. We would love to provide education, but schooling is pricy, usually owners teach their own pets, and unfortunately, that's out of our hands. Perhaps you could adopt a pet today and provide the help they both need and deserve." Mr. Koodu keeps his composure in a much more professional manner than his assistant.
"Nah, not what I'm looking for, I can just go to a breeder for things this plain." The young man scoffs, the young woman cringes, biting her lip.
"You could always donate, maybe we could afford some literature for the residents." Li'l Kat remarks, flatly.
"I don't have the funds." The man gives an impatient sigh.
"Go figure." The Jollin mutters to herself.
The couple leave. A muffled conversation begins outside the window, below a rainbow saying "Come on in, make a new friend, today!" After a few minutes, the young man sighs and walks off, head tilted back toward the sky. The young woman returns inside.
"Sorry, my brother's a bit of an--well, he's not one to think before he talks. I, personally, adored the Marsh Mahar on the second row.
"Oh?" The Jollin would blush if her fur would reveal it. "W-well, um, yes, I can get you an adoption form, right away!" Li'l Kat forces her face into a messed up, embarrassed smile. "I-I'm sorry for how I--"
"No, no, no need to apologize! It's fine. In fact, I'm glad you gave him a piece of your mind. I couldn't believe how he talked about the pets. Hey, maybe someone could do something about the pets' education. Maybe a low-income school, here? I mean, if not in the Adoption Center, the museum may have a free auditorium at a regular time." Gears began turning in Li'l Kat's head, immediately.
"Hmm, hmm, here we go!" The young woman smiles and hands the paperwork back.
"That'll be--" The young woman places twenty five thousand sP on the counter.
"To help with the pets." The woman smiles and lifts the Mahar, which Mr. Koodu had walked out, giving him a hug. The Mahar looks at the young woman, a mixture of surprise and happiness on his face. "You're adorable! Let's go get you something to eat." The woman speaks, her conversation becoming muffled by the door shutting behind her.
"Well, that happened." Li'l Kat tilts her head to the side.
"It certainly did. Can I advise you to try and be more respectful, even our-erm-even our rudest clients are still clients."
"Mr. Koodu, I respect you, and love you like a second keeper, but these pets are my responsibility they-"
"They're my responsibility, too. I know it's hard sometimes, but honey and vinegar and all of that."
"I understand, but these pets are in the next room and he's talking down to them. I don't know firsthand what abandonment is like, but I see the fake smiles every day, just like you. I see shattered hopes, and you may have built a resistance to it, but I haven't, and I want these pets to know I am there for them. I don't do this for the money. I appreciate the money, yes, but I do this for them. I understand your sentiment. I really do, however, there's a time for honey, and there's a time for fire, and he crossed the line when he talked bad about my pets, especially within earshot."
"I understand, just think about it last time. I agreed, by the way. I just wouldn't have said it to his face." The man chuckles, Li'l Kat smirks.

"Hi, everyone!" Li'l Kat smiles, greeting her family.
"Li'l Kat!" Katrynah tackles her pal. "How was work, today?"
"I think I'm quitting."
"What do you mean?!" Both Katrynah and Kit stare at the Jollin.
"I will still be helping with the Adoption Center, but I have a bigger goal in mind, and I need to build connections elsewhere. Hey-- Katrynah. Does the Delphi Museum of Art have an auditorium that could be used daily?"
"Hm? Why?"
"Just tell me."
"Well, yeah, I mean, we could fill it for a few hours pretty much any day."
"How about every day?"
"Every day? Hmm. Well, I suppose between all of the performing arts stages and practice stages, there's probably at least one available every day, if that's what you mean."
"Well, that may work."
"What's the deal? Seriously, this is very strange."
"I'm thinking of starting a school, a free school. I'd rent books from the library, where I'd be getting my new job. I'd be teaching low-income and abandoned pets. I really think something could be done for them, and nobody else is stepping up, so I guess I will."
"Teaching, like, science and stuff?"
Kit's ears perked up at the thought of anything science.
"Whatever I could--hey! You could give art classes. You could teach painting and drawing and--I mean, if you're interested. It's up to you, really."
"I'd be happy to! It would have to be an evening school, though, since I don't get off until then."
The two turn to Kit, who blushes. "I-I'm not the teacher...type. I'd be happy to help in other ways, but I uh... I mean, you know how I get... tal-talking to even just one or two people. A whole room? Uh..." Kit backs away. His keeper scratches him behind the ears.
"Fair enough. Maybe you could help us research things, or suggest books--" The Jollin shrugs.
"Books? Oh, I can do that, I mean for science you could--"
"Woah, woah, woah. We need to get some other things sorted out, first. I like the enthusiasm, but we need to figure out how to do this, and I need to apply at the Library."
"What would we call this?" Katrynah's smile was almost painful to her cheeks.
"Pets for the Eduation of... hmm... maybe a nice acronym... What would work with... hmm."
Katrynah pulls out a dictionary for Li'l Kat. After several minutes deliberating with a pen and paper, the two look at the words they've come across, and see their phrase. They sing in chorus "Pets Educating Across Communities Everywhere!" The two chuckle.
"PEACE, it is, then. I like it." Katrynah nods.
"Cute. I-I dig it." Kit smiles, looking over the two's handiwork. "I love the idea of helping pets learn. You two would be great for this."
"Now just to get to the Library, and talk with the owner of the Art Museum."
