Galena's study was normally bright, airy, and well organized. But now her desk and even the floor were nearly buried underneath sheets of paper, each one the result of a failed test. Each one a hit to Galena's morale.
"I don't understand!" she cried to the empty room. "I've tried literally every combination of metal and crystal possible! Not a single one is the same result as the Legendary!" She let her head hit the desk with a thunk. "How?! How can that be?" In a mild bit of frustration, Galena knocked over the mug of spiced mocha she'd been drinking to stay awake through all her testing. She wondered if maybe she'd messed up one or more of the tests in a sleep-deprived state, or misread them. Or worse, maybe she'd made a mistake on the initial test. No...no, she was sure she'd been extra careful there. Maybe the mystery material didn't exist on Subeta any more?
Galena let out a long, sad sigh. Or maybe Erelin had been right all along. Maybe this had been a waste of time. Maybe what the weapon was made of had nothing to do with its hidden power. Which would mean attaching any crystals to it wouldn't do much to enhance anything, except possibly its looks. Erelin had been gently trying to tell her that, but was also willing to humor her, because she was just that good a friend.
There was a gentle knock at her door. "Come in," she mumbled, her head still resting on the table. When no one entered, Galena lifted her head, brushed away the piece of paper stuck to it, and tried again. "Come in!"
An Angelic Legeica gently pushed the door open and stopped. A couple of minions sat on his back. This wasn't unusual; he almost always had at least two or three following him or getting a ride on his back. Most of the time he had a small minion parade at his heels.
"Hi, Rasdan," she sighed.
"Hey sunshine! How's the- oh. Oh dear."
Galena said nothing, just sleepily blinked at him.
"...girl. Do you know how puffy your little eyes are?"
"No," she grumbled, laying her head back down on the table. "Thanks for telling me."
Rasdan made a sympathetic noise, then came in and put a wing around her. "Oh, Galena. I'm sorry. We're all just worried about you, you know? Hobbies are supposed to be fun, darling!"
"I know," she replied.
The older angel gave her a little pat with his wing, then withdrew it as he walked over to her window. "Why don't you take a little break, hm?" he said, right before pulling her curtain back to reveal a lovely sunset. "I was coming to tell you about the Korid meteor shower tonight. Perfect temperature, clear skies, Anduniel and I have a perch with a lovely view picked out...why don't you come watch with us, dear?"
Galena sighed. It would make her feel better. "Okay," she agreed, sniffling.
"Wonderful! Meet us at the dunes behind the Secluded Shrine at 9 PM?" he asked, grinning because he was pleased with his goofy little rhyme.
"Sure," she replied, smiling weakly. "Shrine at nine."
"Shrine at nine!" echoed Rasdan with a singsong tone and a little dance. He then pranced out the door, as he usually liked to do. "See you there~!"
"Bye," Galena whispered. Once he was gone, she took a good look around her study. She had plenty of time to clean it up a bit before she left.
By the time Galena met Rasdan and Anduniel at the dunes behind the Secluded Shrine, she already felt a little better. The night was clear and pleasantly warm, and the vast expanse of indigo sky provided the perfect backdrop for the meteor shower. The two other angels each waved a wing at her in greeting. Anduniel, always prepared, had brought snacks; she'd also probably brought the beach towels and outdoor cushions too, but had made Rasdan and his minions carry some.
Soon they were all settled atop one of the dunes, comfortable and chatting excitedly, taking friendly bets on who would see the first meteor. (No one won: Rasdan's Mirath beat them all to it. Though Anduniel tried to argue that it didn't count.) Galena folded her wings and lay on her side, head on a big cushion, briefly tuning out the friendly noise and simply gazing up into the beautiful sky as the meteors began to fall in greater numbers.
One particularly bright meteor fell lower in the sky than the others, appearing to land on the desert below and making Galena and her friends gasp in amazement. Just then, Galena got an idea. Of course, she thought. I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier! Why not? Galena suddenly leaped to her feet, startling her friends and Rasdan's minions.
"Sweetie?" asked Rasdan. "Everything okay?"
"Absolutely!" said Galena, her eyes sparkling. "I've just been inspired! Anduniel, I might need to borrow some of your maps."
"Er...okay?" she replied, not sure what Galena was talking about.
Rasdan tilted his head curiously. "I'm glad you're feeling better, hon, but...promise you won't burn yourself out on this new idea?"
Galena settled back down on the blanket. "Don't worry, Rasdan. I'll wait until tomorrow to start. And I'll need some help, so I won't be going at this alone."
Reassured, everyone else sat back down too. But even as she and her friends continued to watch the meteor shower, Galena's mind kept humming, the new possibility reigniting her enthusiasm. She would spend a little time in the Sacred Lands archives; maybe Erelin could check the ones in Ytiva, if she wasn't too busy. And she knew she'd probably have to pay Iruta even more to make yet another set of samples, especially out of very unusual materials.
But she couldn't help but hope. When she'd written her last letter to Erelin before, Galena had only been kidding when she'd mentioned a material not native to Subeta. But what if it was true? What if the Legendaries were made with something...from outer space?
