It was the most desolate, lonely place Galena had ever seen.
In the sea between the Artic Frost and Sacred lands were many islands, one of which she stood on now. But this was no lush, tropical paradise. Only cracked, dry, semi-frozen earth as far as the eye could see. Nothing lived here aside from lichen that clung tenaciously to the cliffs surrounding the island, which themselves were little more than a sheer drop to certain death, either immediately by the jagged rocks and ice, or slowly in the dark roiling sea. There was no inlet to receive a sailing vessel of any kind. Galena had to fly here, and even that had been difficult with the violent wind that howled constantly around the island, without so much as a single tree to impede it.
There was no reason any sane person would want to come here.
Unless...
Anduniel landed a short distance away from Galena, nearly falling over sideways when a sudden gust of wind caught her wings. The weight of the supplies she carried helped keep her stable.
"Okay, I've checked and re-checked my maps. This should be the place," Anduniel said after she'd recovered.
"I trust you," Galena replied. "I just hope the old records were right."
Anduniel nodded. "Sooo...what exactly are we looking for?"
"A big crater, if we're lucky. The wind has probably eroded and even filled it in some over time, but I bet it's still visible." Galena shivered from another gust of cold wind, which rattled her own gear. "Let's get started!"
"Yeah, before we freeze to death on this rock." Anduniel removed a map and compass from her bag. She and Galena had to pin the map down to keep it from blowing away in the cold, fierce wind. After she made a few calculations, Anduniel nodded again. "That way. To the northeast."
It actually wasn't very far, but the bitter cold and howling wind made the hike seem longer. But at last, Galena saw what she was looking for. She picked up her pace as it came into view. To Anduniel, it looked just like any other part of the island, only with craters.
"Wait up!" Anduniel cried as Galena slid down the side of one of the craters. It was shallower than she'd thought it would be, which was both good and bad. Good, because it would be easier to get out; bad because it meant further to dig - assuming anything was there at all. Anduniel carefully picked her way down, still not sure what they were looking for here.
Galena began digging herself, not caring about the dirt getting between her cloven hooves. A short way down, she found the rim of another, much smaller crater. Moving aside, she tried again.
"What are we looking for?" Anduniel finally asked, wanting to help but not sure how.
"Small but heavy pebbles," Galena answered. "I don't think we'll be lucky enough to find a big chunk. Those were probably uncovered and taken away a long time- here!!" she suddenly cried, unearthing a tiny gray rock. It was dull and lumpy; to Anduniel it looked like a fossilized raisin.
"That's it?" she asked, dubious.
"Honestly, we're lucky to find this at all," Galena admitted. "It's not much, but it'll have to do. I'll just have to be extra careful and make the tests count, that's all!"
Anduniel peered down at the unimpressive little rock. "I still don't get what's so special about this."
"It's a meteorite!" Galena replied. "Likely made of something that can't be found on Subeta. It could even have been used in the Legendaries!"
"Really?"
"Maybe. Hopefully. That's what I'm going to find out," Galena said as she carefully levitated the little rock with her magic and sealed it in a bag. "Let's look around and see if there's another stray meteorite or two."
As they searched, the two angels were unaware of a pair of small creatures up on a hill, watching their every move.
When Galena returned to her little study, she found a note on her desk under one of her geodes. It read:
Dear Galena, Found this in the archives while dusting and thought it would interest you. Love, Ras
She smiled and moved the geode aside. Underneath it was a few sheets of paper, copied from an older source. The top page had a title that read, "On the Mysterious Stone Known as Atlamillia." It was a promising lead and Galena was anxious to read about it, but she was even more anxious to test the samples that Iruta had made for her (after balking a little). She loaded the little slides into her machine, turned it on, then said a quick prayer and turned off the lights in her study.
The projection of light and color from the machine said it all; it matched the Legendary pattern exactly.
"Yes! YES!!" she shouted, jumping up and down. "That's it! That's the missing piece!" She scurried to her desk, inspired all over again. "Now I just need to figure out its structure, and then see which crystals would pair best with that, and-"
Just then, the door to her study burst open, and a stream of shadowy figures poured in, making her leap aside with a shriek. But then they began hitting her machine and rummaging through her papers, ripping them as they did so. Galena's fear quickly turned to fury.
"HEY!" she shouted, swatting at the creatures. "Stop that! Get off!" Desperate to save her work, Galena levitated a few samples from her rock and crystal collection and hurled them at the creatures, striking them. That worked at first; whatever creatures didn't get hit were scrambling out the door. But they were herded back in when a much larger shadow oozed up through the entrance, taking the form of a Dark Matter Mahar who wielded a massive barbed sword. He pointed this weapon at Galena, and she and the remaining creatures both froze in fear.
"Galena. Come with me," spoke the Mahar, his voice as rich as the finest chocolate. "You're the final contestant on...You Know Too Much."
