A man once loved to walk through the woods. It soothed his weary soul; the animals all knew and trusted him, and often he would simply sit by the river for hours, communing with nature.

One day, while he sat by the river, a mirror washed ashore, silver and ornate. The man was not known for vanity, but he picked the mirror up regardless. It was, after all, quite lovely, and even if he had no use for it, he could sell it to someone who did.

Upon picking up the mirror, he noticed an inscription on the back. 'Look upon me,' it said. 'Look upon me and your true self shall be revealed.' With a laugh, he glanced at his reflection upon the smooth surface.

Horrified by the visage he saw there, he threw the mirror down onto the rocks and ran, but the damage was done. The mirror lay shattered, the river tugging at the pieces, and like tears the cracks wept red.
