A Lifetime Away
With a hiss of pain she wrenched herself free from his grasp, fleeing to the end of the loose gravel path leading to their home before she turned around, blinking away the tears (stay calm stay clear think you need to think right now) that threatened to fall and obscure her sight.
Red faced, he screamed at her from the stoop. It was the usual fare; insults, demands, threats. You worthless girl. How dare you say that to me? Come back in or I'll kill you. Come back in or I'll kill all of you. (all talk you coward you can punch but you're too afraid to do anything else aren't you)
No one else spoke. Behind her step-father, at the end of the hallway, two faces peeked out from the kitchen. Good. He had left Maybelline and Mary alone when she had infuriated him. Sometimes she could never be sure.
Her back hurt. Many muscles hurt, she realized, and not just from his blows. The anxiety that threatened to overwhelm her breathed and expanded. God, she needed a hit. But no, no, she needed to try and stay clear for now. Hero could wait. (it can't wait you need it but it's all gone)
A beat up LeSabre groaned to a stop on the street, the driver - Max had gotten her call, thank goodness - waving to her. The girl in the passenger seat rolled her window down.
"Come on Rie, get over here!" She should. She should turn and go. However, an errant thought held her in place.
This time could be like all the others. She could walk back to the house. There would be pain, yeah, but she could sob out apologies to her sisters and her mother when he was done with her. Maybe they would accept them, maybe she would be able to go home again. The insults she had screamed could be forgotten, the thrown decorations fixed or cleaned up. They could be as close to a family as they could get again.
The car horn blared behind her, shattering the thought of what could have been. No. It would never have been. They would always end up in this situation again, until she made her choice. She had.
Without a word, she turned and entered the car. The front door of the house slammed as she shut her own.
Good bye Maybelline, Mary Kay, Mother.
The man beside her in the back seat (what is his name I can't remember) pressed something into her hand. They had some Dragon to spare. This was good. The girl in the passenger seat (jane or kate or something) laughed as they screeched away from Rie's broken house, heading towards the highway.
Where they went, Riece didn't know. She didn't know a lot of things for many years, starting when she walked to the car shortly after her sixteenth birthday. Clarity only returned when she opened her eyes and found herself in a white walled room, laying in a strange bed. A woman wearing bright scrubs (is she a nurse she must be) looked over at her as she stirred, before giving a small shake of her head and turning back to her current patient. She was Riece Fisher, they reminded her, she was twenty-one, and she had been found lying alone, unconscious, before an abandoned tenement deep in the city.
Max and Whats His Face and Jane-Kate weren't there. They never came.

Born the youngest out of three daughters to Sam and Alexis Fisher, Riece quickly became something of an oddity in the family; where her sisters were gifted with musical or athletic talents, as were her parents, she was never happier than when she had pads of blank paper and crayons at hand. None of the family had an inkling of where this fascination with art came from, given that no others displayed such a talent for a few generations back, but they supported her and kept many supplies close at hand. Her youth was spent leaning over many different sketches of her family, their cats, or their backyard, a serious look plastered to her face as she worked.
Rie's family life was, for a time, stable and she knew the happiness of a family who was getting by well. This lasted until her father, an ex-military man, passed away from a battle with pancreatic cancer when she was seven years old. Ever her favorite parent, Riece found herself lost without his council for a time. Relationships became strained as her mother was away from home for longer times, working to support her children, and her sisters, four years older than herself, failed to see why their littlest sister wasn't accepting their loss as easily as they had. Their fighting only grew as Alexis began a relationship with Kevin Curite, a man given to harsh words and hard fists when angry or drunk. Despite what she knew to be going on, Alexis grew to depend on his monetary assistance and wed him a scant few months after their meeting. The girls were forced to learn to live with their new "father".
Feeling like an outcast and furious with how life was treating her, Rie turned away from her family in her early teens and began to act out. Vandalism and throwing stones became her forte for a time, and eventually she became known by a trio of other teens running in her home town. They were Max Stevenson, Janice Paolo, and Alec Markatz. Eventually they adopted Rie into their group, and she took to her new family quickly. Two months into their bonding, as they sat in Max's car one night, Alec passed her a blunt and Rie entered the world of illegal drugs. As time passed, they began to get into harder drugs, where Rie found what swiftly became her favorite; heroin. Affected by her new crutch, Rie became short with her family and quick to attack much as her step-father was when she was withdrawing. This led to her running away from home with her friends. They traveled where they wanted, living on the streets and stealing or robbing to fund their addictions. Five years passed as such, until one day Rie emptied too much of her beloved substance into her system. As she collapsed in seizures and they realized what had happened to her, Rie's friends fled and left her behind to slip away into a coma. Were it not for a passerby seeing her sprawled before the tenement they had taken to living in, she would have died then and there.
As it was, she was found in time to be saved, though her coma lasted for quite some time. Desperate to find out what had happened to her family in the years she was away, Rie managed to have one of her sisters tracked down, who quickly came to her side; Mary Kay returned, her husband and twins in tow. With her help Rie entered a detoxification center and tried to break the habit she had let rule her life for five long years. She emerged "cured" and began to focus on what she was to do with her life. Living with Mary Kay for a time, she found a fascination with tattoos and piercings. Managing to secure an apprenticeship in a local shop, she trained for a year and a half until she felt confident and set out to work. Time passed and finally she secured what had become a goal for herself; her own tattooing and piercing parlor opened when she was twenty-six years old, and she finally moved away from her sister's house.
She lives above her shop with the rat she likes to call her best friend, Pest. Though outgoing and seemingly a social butterfly, she takes time in placing her trust in others, as what happened to her with Max and the others is never far from her mind. Once her defenses are breached, however, she offers a much more considerate, peaceful side to her usually brash and loud personality. She tries to be a solid, dependable friend through and through to any who need her.
