Years ago, a young man with a packet of seeds in his pocket and a greener thumb than most built a greenhouse. Now, three generations later, that very same greenhouse sits happily on the corner of Market Street and Commerce Avenue in the vibrant Sixth Loop. Like an old reliable friend, Arcadia has opened its doors through holidays and festivals, sun and rain, good days and bad, charming passersby with all manner of fresh blooms and arrangements.

Looking to start your own garden? Come take a spin through our racks of seeds, where you can find classics, mixed wildflowers, and everything in between! Worried you don't have the patience to start directly from seed? Why not try our table devoted purely to prepared planters?

Or perhaps you just want to brighten up someone's day in the old tried and true method. At Arcadia we pride ourselves on our ability to grow almost all of our stock in house, no matter how improbable it may seem. Our selection is rotated often to reflect the seasons and delight the senses—the colorful blooms waiting by our front entrance to welcome you in are but a small sample of our available flora, which you can find bursting forth from every corner of our cozy front room. Should none of our single stems or prearranged bouquets catch your eye, you can place a custom arrangement request at the counter. Please be aware that more elaborate displays will require at least 24 hours of advance notice.

After Hours Service

Arcadia is pleased to offer a selection of simple yet elegant late-night bouquets if you missed us during normal store hours. These are here for whatever reason you might need, whenever you might need them. All of our late-night arrangements are made day-of, and can be found on the Specials trellis by our front door.

If you'd like, you may leave a tip in the accompanying donation box. Otherwise, we hope to see you again during the day someday!

About Your Florist

FLORIST: Nyrene Takahashi
[Nyrene's Personal Shelf]

Third-generation florist, and much happier about it than her predecessor! Don't worry, her mother likes plants too—she just liked doing horticultural research more than floral design and bookkeeping. Arcadia is Nyrene's pride and joy, second only to family. She grew up playing in the dirt of the greenhouse, engaging in soak-offs with her brother when they should have been watering the plants, pricking her fingers on thorns behind the design bench, and earning her allowance ferrying deliveries around on her bike. An adventurous ornamenter, she has a special spot for large challenges that pair living flowers with delicate paper creations.

Nyrene is happily married with a set of six-year-old twin boys and a fat cat. Her husband is a firefighter. She seems to have inherited the knack for growing even the most impossible of flowers—a true green thumb if there ever was one!

Friends of the Shop

Olie

A quiet young man who comes by in the mornings to look at the bamboo, though he always seems more interested in their rock bases. He works at the local museum, and Nyrene looks forward to the future when her kids will be old enough for field trips there. For now though, if he's not in any particular rush and if the kids are up early enough, he'll occasionally take the time to teach them something about the Earth, or the soil, or just a particularly interesting rock that he always seems to have hidden deep within his pockets.

Riley (and Kane)

A university student who's cat sees the vet at the nearby Nine Lives and More clinic. Riley's cat, Kane, is the most relaxed creature that Nyrene has ever seen, even considering their own old and lazy fat cat. Riley is fond of collecting snazzy little collars for his cat, and rotates through the various designs as frequently as Nyrene does Arcadia's stock. He dreams of going to space one day, but for now, he makes do with the neighborhood stargazing parties.

Ewan

A fellow shopkeeper on Commerce Avenue, Ewan Furns owns the stationery store Paper Fairytales, introduced Nyrene to paper folding, and makes excellent hot cocoa. Several curious rumors about him and his shop abound, such as any wish written on his paper being bound to come true in one way or another, or how he was once a delinquent of exceptional notoriety. Nyrene grows blue-and-white streaked lilies just for him, in return for select batches of paper for her clients' centerpieces. Things such as rumors of wishes granted or impossible-to-grow flowers flourishing are never discussed.
