But . . . that was as far as I got.
It was then that she revealed that her ship needed some serious repairs. I think that was what struck me the most about our conversation. It was her ship. Not the ship she served on. Not the ship of a friend or lover who had just made port. It was hers.
Being one of the best shipwrights in the city (or anywhere, in my personal opinion), I was more than happy to take a look at what tragedies she and her crew had inflicted on ol’ faithful. I think I recall the first words that came out of my mouth when I saw that carrack floating in its berth. I believe it was something akin to, “Holy mother of fuck! Did you sail it into a cliff, for fuck’s sake?”
She was contrite (and rightly so) and explained that she and the crew rarely made repairs, or, when they had to, it was a patch job done on some lonely island. “We don’t really have anyone that can fix the ship with any sort of skill. The last time we had to repair the main mast . . . well, Kai may have been a little rougher on it than need be,” she told me, scratching her head. “So, can you fix her?”
“Uhm, I think I can if the keel isn’t damaged,” I replied with a note of uncertainty. Yeah, yeah, I’ll admit I wasn’t sure that I could fix it. If I couldn’t fix it, though, I was positive that no other shipwright in port had a ghost of a chance.
I gathered my tools and set to work. I had to reset the mast, fix a large hole in the hull, and try to figure out some way to repair the figurehead and the prow. It wasn’t easy, and her ragtag crew was able to help me more than I first thought. Some were cheery and more than pleased to banter with me. The keel was fine and some of the female crew onboard were not only quick of wit, but exceedingly helpful. Some were not, but that’s okay.
Not everyone likes my sense of humour.
I enjoyed my time on the ship so much, I was more than a little smug when she approached me with my payment. I had a surprise for her.“I can’t ever thank you enough for the repairs,” she told me, handing me a weighted box. A quick check inside revealed a king’s ransom in gold and fine jewels.
“Yeah, I know,” I replied casually, closing the lid. “Especially considering that the legendary pirate Suzaku stands before me.”
She stiffened and her hand crept towards the hilt of her enormous sword.
“You should really hide your Jolly Roger a little better, Captain,” I continued, nonplussed. I tucked the box under my arm and cocked an eyebrow. “I mean, folded neatly behind a barrel of fresh water – which I had to move to fix the hole – is kind of out in the open.”
“Blaze,” she hissed in disappointment. She gripped the hilt and shifted her stance.
“There’s really only one solution, now. I mean, you could let me go, but that means I could go talk up the nearest marines. I chatted quite extensively with some of your crew. They are quite talkative, for pirates.”
She grimaced and drew her blade. “I am sorry,” she said in a steady voice, ice creeping into her tone.
“Oh, I know, but you will be sorrier if you kill me here,” I informed her. I inspected a sliver in my thumb. I’d have to get it out later. “Considering I am offering to become your personal shipwright? I think I am being very generous.”
Suzaku stopped dead and her sword tip dropped to the ground. Her reply to my statement was a deadpanned “What?”
“I will be a crew member, Captain,” I explained. “I like your crew, and I like your personality. Now, shall we get a move on? The tide is going out and we should probably be on it.”
She continued to stare at me as I swung an arm over her shoulder and shoved the box of coins into her arms. She startled and juggled her sword and the payment. Her inattention allowed me to steer her towards the port and I smirked as I felt her relax as we walked.
“I won’t accept any foolishness or rebellion on my ship,” she stated when we were a mere few blocks away. I nodded, my grin increasing as I saw the sails towering over the buildings. “And I expect the best of my crew in any instance.”
“Alright, missy.”
“And it’s CAPTAIN, to you, Dell. Or Meeca. I do not want to hear ‘Suzaku‘ from your lips again. Or missy. I really don’t want to hear ‘missy’ from you.”
I chuckled and a stopped before the ship in all its repaired beauty. “Of course, Captain.”

Partners in Crime
Meeca: The Captain
It was your aura, Captain. It drew me like a bar wench draws stares. And I promise I won't call you 'Missy' anymore.
Xian Zhu: The First Mate
You'd like me a lot more if you removed that infernal stick from your backside.
Ryoumei: The Bosun
You should smile more, Bosun. Preferably, not in the ridiculously creepy way you usually do.
Kai-Ryu: The Warrior
You're a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Or, something to that poetic effect. You really make me nervous, actually.
Aimee: The Cannoneer
I think you are my favorite drinking buddy, Wild Cat. Not only can you keep up with me, but our conversations are both wonderfully colourful and soulfully deep. But that might be the rum talking.
Coyote Frost: The Sharpshooter
When you first told me you were a sniper, I recall I made some snide remark about how you could target me any day. I take it back. Please don't shoot me.
Blaze: The Berserker
Our snarky back and forth banter always seems to raise eyebrows. I don't think even the rest of the crew understands the language that we speak to one another.
Skoli: The Informant
I never understood why you joined the crew. Was it my limitless charm?
Tara: The Navigator
I always delight in your garden and the way the flowers flourish before your expert touch. I think it's one of the most relaxing places I've ever been. Maybe we're connected on some level?
Marine: The Doctor
I'm not fond of needles. Can we just skip all the pomp and circumstance and just play "Doctor"?
Aria: The Cook
What is this, Aria? It smells like. . . I don't even have a description for it. Wait. Don't tell me. I don't want to know.
Chloe: The Apprentice
When you first came up to me and asked to be my 'apprentick', I nearly died from cuteness overload. I would move the world for you, Chloe. Never forget that.
