The Beginning:

Cap remembers when he used to be fun and easy-going. He is an Ontra, after all. And he used to love being just a common Ontra. He didn't feel like he had to keep up with any pretense like some of those fancy-colored pets. He could just lay back and enjoy life. It's kind of hard to keep that up when your whole life gets turned upside-down.

It all started when his owner, Hunter, put together that weird map. "Hunter," Cap asked, "why do you even want to go to this new island? I don't think there's very much there." "Exactly," his owner replied. "You don't think there is. Who knows? Plus I've heard you can find cool quests and items there." Cap still didn't understand the enthusiasm, but he was happy to be with his owner and his brothers. When they arrived at the island, Cap conceded that Hunter did indeed have a point. The whole place just exuded exoticism and mystery, and a smile slowly crept to his face. "Okay gang," Hunter announced, "I know I got us all psyched up about coming here, but we can't stay very long today. I just want to know what all there is to do here. So split up, and we'll meet back here in an hour."

Cap trotted around the city. The pirate bar seemed like a fun place, and there was even a real pirate ship in the port! He enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere that hung everywhere. He must have gotten a little too relaxed, because he accidentally bumped into a pet owner who was hurrying through the streets. The boy fell to the ground, an odd assortment of items tumbling out of his hands. "Aaah!" the young man screamed. "Nonono, I can't lose any of these!" He gathered up the items and took off running again, his Pherret bounding along after him. "Just wait and see how cool you're going to look!" Cap could hear the boy tell his pet as they disappeared around the corner. Cap couldn't help but chuckle. Geez, people, he thought to himself. Take it easy. Enjoy life a little more! He looked down and noticed a Viper Fang laying on the ground. "Oh no," Cap gasped. "That boy must have dropped it. These are worth a fortune!" He ran off after the boy to help him out.

He followed the boy's trail as best as he could, but it seemed to dead-end at the edge of a small bay. Across it, Cap could just barely make out a creepy-looking cove. He still had time before he had to meet back up with his family, so he swam across. As he got there, he saw the boy and his Pherret climbing into a boat to leave. The boy was crying, and his pet tried to console him. Cap knew he had to be upset over his missing item, and tried to show him he had recovered it. "Excuse me, kid? I think I found your..""SHUT UP!" the boy shouted."I don't want to talk to anyone! I can't believe I lost it, she'll never let us go back there! Let's go home, buddy, I'm sorry I let you down..." They rowed off, and Cap could still hear the boy sobbing. His curiosity was really piqued now, and he headed deeper into the cove where he saw the boy come from, Viper Fang in tow.

He followed some creepy tunnels, which got darker and darker. Eventually, though, he noticed a faint glow that got brighter as he walked. The tunnel eventually led to a huge cavern. In the middle of the room, he saw the pile of the boy's items. He must have left them in his despair. "Well well, what have we here?" A voice seemed to emanate from everywhere; it was almost beautiful, but Cap could tell there was something sinister behind it. From a pool of water on the other side of the room rose a mermaid. Cap knew the voice belonged to her - she was gorgeous, but had a glint of evil in her eyes. Cap stared before managing to stammer out a response. "Oh! Um, yea, I w-was just helping-" "Help? No, nobody who comes to see me is helping anybody. They're always greedy. In fact, you seem especially greedy..." Cap's face now looked as dumbfounded as it did scared. "Yes...don't think I don't see that viper fang you have with you. You stole it from that poor boy! Not that I really cared about him, but wickedness must always be rewarded accordingly. And it's oh so convenient that I just happen to have these spell ingredients right here!" She closed her eyes and raised her hands. The viper fang left Cap's paw, and started floating in the air, along with the rest of the ingredients that were piled on the ground. They began floating in a circle, slowly spinning faster and faster, and started to glow. Cap was frozen with fear as the circle slowly descended, enveloping him. He felt the air around him and in his lungs begin to heat, and suddenly there was a bright flash of light.

".....Cap?.....ake up.....C'mon, bud....ease get u...." Cap slowly, groggily opened his eyes. Looking around, he saw he was back in the town. He was relieved when he realized it must have all been a dream. He must have knocked himself out when he bumped into that kid earlier. His family's faces, however, told a different story. Ray looked positively giddy, while Herro sneered and looked away, a hint of jealousy in his eyes. The most telling face was Hunter's, which was wracked with concern. "H...Hunter?" Cap managed to get out. "Oh good. It is you. I wasn't one hundred percent sure. I mean, it is a big change..." Hunter seemed relieved, but still a little unsettled. The words seemed to resonate in Cap's head. "Change? What do you mean, change?" Hunter's face grew worried as he led Cap over to the water. A strange, vaguely familiar face looked back at him. He had never seen an Ontra with those blue eyes, horns, or strange markings before. He reached to scratch his head. As the other Ontra did the same, it hit him. How do you like it, sweetie? The mermaid's voice echoed in his head. Do you like my blessing? Now you are forever mine, and I will always be able to call you to do my bidding. Hahahaha.... Cap's shock quickly wore off. You listen to me, witch! He responded to the voice in his head, I don't care what control you think you have over me, but I will fight you at every turn. And when I'm strong enough, I'm coming after you! He instantly resolved himself to his new mission. He would use this curse to make himself stronger, better, and wiser. He would commit himself to stopping other pets and owners from making this Faustian bargain, and would eventually take on the sea witch herself. He was no longer the happy-go-lucky Ontra he had been. His life began anew.
