It wasn't that long ago that he was someone, something, else. There was nothing special about him, at least nothing good. Growing up, he was good, full of faith and hope and always seeing the best in people and in himself. That part of him was shut off as he grew up. From then on, every thought was plagued with self-doubt. He vividly remembered various failures in painful, debilitating shocks that caused him to cry out. Not only that, but dark, evil thoughts began to creep into his head. He could no longer trust himself to be around others; he could hardly trust being around himself. His thoughts were a mix of self-motivation and harm to others - resulting in an apathy towards life that he projected outward. He knew this was a problem that needed to be solved, so he began seeing the best doctors around.

The solution to his problem was, incidentally, the most radical one. Euclid had been experimenting with new and different ways in which his Zapper could alter pets. He agreed to help excise the thoughts and emotions that kept the Kumos from living a normal life. The procedure seemed to go fine, but as he awoke, he discovered all wasn't as it had been planned. His stray thoughts were gone; unfortunately, the pool of evil thoughts in his mind was apparently strong enough to form its own being when separated from him; it became a nightmarish creature that harbored every thought he didn't want - a monster of Repression.

The procedure had some other unforeseen consequences as well, more positive ones. The small voice of a conscience that he had abandoned with his childhood was also able to separate itself, becoming literal angel on his shoulder to guide him. Even stranger, the empty void inside him now bristled with power, an inner flame that he could project outward. With this power came an unwavering belief in his own thoughts and abilities. With these gifts, he left his old life behind. He set out to help those in need, both by literally saving their lives when necessary and by encouraging them to believe in themselves and wield their own inner flame. It wasn't long before this hero was approached by the Subeta Defense League - he gladly joined them, creating a new identity as a blazing torch of Conviction.
