Naeva Ari trembled a little as she pulled the final book off the shelf, knowing what it would mean if she read it. Necromancy. It went against everything her people believed in to practice dark magic like this, but the situation was getting desperate. Their enemies were at the gates and they were hemorrhaging soldiers so quickly on the lines that they didn’t stand a chance. They needed an edge. Something… anything. And old forbidden texts pretty much summed up everything that she had on-hand.

“Naeva!?” She paused when she heard Leige’s voice behind her. He trotted up behind her and tossed the book from her paws before she could even open it, “What the hell are you doing!? These books… they’re forbidden! We keep them hidden for a reason! Your father’s own words! We cannot turn to them now!”

Naeva growled a little, backing away from him, her wings flaring out, “We don’t have a choice Leige! The enemies are at the gates, we don’t have any more tricks to play! We’re out of soldiers! This is the only option now! It’s all we have! Do you want our people to die? Because that’s what going to happen unless we get this done!”

Leige recoiled in horror, “This goes against everything we’re supposed to stand for… for good and honest people… I know we’re secretive and that… that maybe we don’t always uphold the values we should… but this? These are demonic powers, Naeva. They could destroy you. Completely.”

Naeva smiled sadly, “After my father… I’m the last of the Archdukes of Ari. He’s old now… he doesn’t have much time left. But if I can save these people… my people, no matter what the cost, it will be worth it. Don’t you think?”

Leige looked mortified and he looked away, biting hard into his lip. But then he sat down, “Then I’m doing it with you. Do whatever you have to do but… I won’t let you do this alone.”

Naeva blinked, horrified at the very thought of dragging him down with her, “Leige… you don’t have to follow me into one of my stupid schemes this time. I release you from what you think you still owe me. You paid back your debts a long time ago.”

Leige smiled sadly, shaking his head, “Sorry Archduchess. You’re just going to have to deal with the fact that I won’t let you be a moron alone.”

Naeva sighed loudly, “Fine. Whatever makes you happy. But don’t blame me when we both die.”

“Oh, I probably will anyway.”

A glass shattered beside her ear as her father screamed at her, “What have you done!? You’re cold to the touch! Empty! And Leige… what monster have you twisted him into!? What blight have you brought across not just our home, and our people, but upon yourself!? You have failed me and everyone else!”

“Father please!” She snapped, “You’re ill and you aren’t thinking straight! We saved our homeland! The invaders are gone, we’re safe now!” She tried to explain, but once again had to turn away from the glass that was flung in her direction.

“Banished!” The Archduke screamed at his daughter and Leige, who stood in horror at the sight of their friends and companions turning their backs on them, “I banish the both of you from my lands!” He stared down Leige, “I should have banished you from the beginning, worthless outsider! You were meant to protect her, not allow her to destroy her down soul!”

Leige seemed mortified by the implication while Naeva tried to hide her shame. With more anger. An unfortunate short-falling of hers. “Don’t you dare blame this on him! What I did… I don’t regret it! Don’t you understand what I am now!? How powerful I am now!? I could turn the Archdukes of Ari into Kings and Queens! Who cares what magic I use to do it!?”

The Archduke laughed bitterly, “My daughter… your actions are one thing, but your inability to accept your mistake is another entirely! I will not return my banishment! You have twenty-four hours to be gone from our lands. Never return. Not until you have learned a lesson in humility.”

Leige growled, “Fine. Naeva… come on.”

But she stared down her father, “I’ll never forgive you for this. You banish me… but I relinquish you as my father. I am the only Archduke of Ari left. You’re only a foolish old man!”

Then she turned and left with Leige. He mumbled down to her, “That was a mistake. All of this is.”

“Says you.” She snapped back, too angry to say much else, “I will never admit to anything. I made the right choice. I’ll destroy anyone who ever tries to tell me different.”

“You’re impossible.”

“You’re a fool.”

“Fine.”

There's only one sure way
To bring the giant down
Defunct the strings

With one flat foot
