He stumbled out of the forest, bleeding profusely from the claw and teeth marks that marred his skin. He screamed in pain when another creature landed on his back, tearing at him desperately, but he didn’t know where to go or where to run. He was only a child, but they showed no mercy in trying to drive him from their land. They drove him into the ground, leaping from trees and from the earth itself to take him down.

“Enough.” All stopped as he lay still, their leader approaching from the ranks of the Montres. He was a large creature for his species and at his side was a small girl. It must have been the Archduke’s daughter from her appearance, “Creature, you must leave our lands. Your trespass is unforgivable.”

“Please…” He whispered, looking up shakily, “I can’t… I can’t move… I haven’t… haven’t eaten in days…” He sobbed without meaning to, “Please… I can’t stand… I can’t leave if I can’t stand…”

The Archduke snarled with disgust, “How pathetic. You blame others for your inability to take care of yourself. For that, you shall suffer the consequences. Knights, kill him.”

He closed his eyes and curled up in a ball, preparing for death to come, but before any blow was struck against him the little girl spoke up, “Wait! Don’t hurt him.”

The injured Legecia lifted his head a little, watching her as she stood between him and the murderous knights. The Archduke looked mortified, “Naeva. What are you doing?”

“He’s a child.” The girl, Naeva, spoke harshly, “I’ll take responsibility for him. He might not be one of us, but I will make sure he will be.”

The Archduke frowned, but nodded his head, “If that is what you desire so much… then fine.” He stepped over the boy, staring down cruelly, “You owe my daughter your life now, animal. Anything you do now is only because she has allowed you to continue breathing. If you fail her, or do anything to hurt her… then you truly are worthless. She is the only one who will protect you now.”

Then he left, only a few guards staying to help move the boy, while Naeva rested her paw on his hove, “I’m Naeva. Future Archduchess of Ari. Don’t listen to my father… I’ll protect you. Just be good, alright?” She smiled down at him, ever-kind, “If you’re good, maybe I’ll even make you a knight.” She leaned down, “What’s your name?”

He looked up at her, and couldn’t help but smile a little despite the pain. She had saved him. He was safe. “Leige… my name is Leige…”
