Having grown up in the forest almost completely on his own, Hamilcar hadn’t much known what to think when Demo invited him to stay with her. In a way, he had been flattered. He wasn’t used to being around anyone or anything for a long time. In his forest, Hamilcar had even been short on predators. Venturing out into the world had been a complicated enough affair, but to meet someone who had brought him in off the street had been amazing.

“Are you sure?” He had asked her, for perhaps the nine-hundredth time at he entered the large, and nearly empty, new house, “I really don’t want to impose or anything.”

“Well, you can cook right?” The girl smiled, reaching up into one of her cupboards, “I can’t cook anything that isn’t pre-made. So we can trade back and forth. You be my chef and I’ll let you hang around. I have to make a few preparations as is. We’re going to have some important guests and I want to be able to feed them.”

Hamilcar smiled back at her then. True, he had cooked for himself with barely anything in the forest, plus gotten a job as a part-time baker when he finally ventured into the real world. But it seemed like someone had actually seen some real potential in him. No one had ever told him he could do anything before.

“Thank you Demo. For letting me stay.” He grinned at her, glancing around the large house that would also be his home.

“My pleasure.” She nodded, “I think we’ll have a lot of fun between us.”

With the savings he put away from his job as a baker he had bought himself a little creature. Naeva called it Blarg, and since she was around the most often the name had managed to stick with the odd creature.

Naeva and Leige weren’t actually so bad either. The two had moved in two weeks after Hamilcar, but Demo had been expecting them. The Archduchess and her bodyguard mostly kept to themselves anyway… and Leige tended to be a little condescending sometimes so Hamilcar didn’t mind much. Naeva was friendly though and she made a good roommate. There was something a little strange about her, mostly how cold things seemed around her.

Still, they kept to themselves and Hamilcar had his job to think about. It was nice, having something he was good at. Blarg liked his cooking too, and he was fairly certain that the little creature enjoyed being around him.

Or at least… he hoped so.

“Welcome home Hamilcar.” Naeva called from the main room when he walked inside where she was perched over an old book, her Vita on her shoulder as she combed through old tombs of writing, “Good day?”

“Very.” He smiled a little, stepping over Blarg, who had run down the stairs to greet him and fallen flat on his face in the process, “What are you doing?”

“Finding the secret to eternal life.” Naeva told him, her voice dead serious as she flipped the page, “What about you? Having a girl over tonight?”

Hamilcar laughed a little nervously, “No… no not me. I don’t usually… I don’t have a lot of… people…”

“You should get out more.” Naeva said, settling down, “Get a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend. Whatever makes you happy. Not all of us need to stay cooped up all the time.”

Strangely, those words had a big impact on the rest of Hamilcar’s life. From then on he made a genuine effort to go out and make new friends, despite being a little socially awkward. But he liked to think that was something he could improve on.

Just an ordinary day.
Just trying to get by.
Just a boy,
Just an ordinary boy.
But he was looking to the sky.
And as he asked if I would come along
I started to realize
That everyday he finds
Just what he's looking for,
Like a shooting star he shines.
