"It's nice," she says, checking the sweater in the mirror, "but do you have it in --"

"-- Pink?" Karaline finishes, raising a knowing eyebrow.

"Yes," Larks says emphatically. The saleslady backs away a few steps, clearly uncomfortable.

"Other colours are nice too." They've gone over this so many times that now it's not so much an argument as a routine. "Variety is the spice of life!"

"I guess, but they're not my favourite, and if I'm going to get one I should get my favourite, right?"

Karaline makes a non-committal noise. "You'd look good in this blue, or that polka-dotted one."

"Kara," she says, dragging out the last A. "You know that it's not about how nice it looks --"

"-- though you like that too --"

Larks sticks her tongue out at her before continuing. "It's about how it feels."

"You can't feel a colour."

"Maybe you can't, but I can. And pink feels...the best."

That's putting it lightly, though it is true. There are just so many reasons behind it that saying that doesn't cover. Pink is so many things -- cotton candy, teddy bears, comfy sweaters. The light of a sunrise, her cat's collar, the soft petals of the roses in her garden in the spring, the shiny scales of Kara's fish. But most of all, romance. Love.

Larks is no first-hand expert in love, unfortunately, but she holds fiercely to the promise of finding it someday. She's not as determined or self-confident as Karaline is for the most part, but in this they are evenly matched. There's love out there for everyone, and one of those people is her. And she'll be ready for it, in her wardrobe of pink clothes the colour of dreams.

"Okay, I'm ready to give in for the day," Kara says, rolling her eyes. She turns to the awkwardly-hovering saleslady and asks if they sell the sweater in pink.

"Um, yes!" she says, snapping back to her cheerful work demeanour. "They should be right here...aha!"

The saleslady turns away from the rack, holding up a pink sweater in each hand.

"These are the only ones left in this colour," she adds, hoping to close the sale.

Larks looks at her best friend.

"No," Karaline says, reading her expression. "You can't possibly --"

They leave the store in their matching pink sweaters.
