stop at the port

You are standing at an old port, wistfully watching the last ship sail the ocean as it slowly disappears behind the horizon. That was your ship. You missed it.

You were late by only a couple of minutes but by the time you finally reached the port, it had started its journey without you aboard. You are now stuck here until the next fare arrives in a few hours.

What to do now? There is so much free time.

The harsh ocean winds slash against your soft skin. The sun is setting down and the temperatures are dropping. You are not going to wait it out here that's for sure.

You pick up your suitcase and begin to walk back along the main path. The buildings have seen better days, the entire place looks almost abandoned. The walls made out of rotting wood seem to be barely standing. You notice the broken windows, fallen chimneys, and every roof full of holes. Vermin is crawling everywhere and the smells are just awful. Strangely you don't see a single soul out there. It's getting hard to believe anybody actually lives at this place, it feels like walking through a ghost town. You were really hoping you would catch your ship in time, you didn't want to spend any extra time around a place like this.

You stop in front of what appears to be an old restaurant. It looks just as repulsive as every other building you passed on your way here.

The moon is now high up in the sky, it is so cold, you are so tired, and you're starting to realize just how hungry you are. You decide to risk it, take a deep breath to brace yourself for whatever you're going to see inside. Accompanied by a loud squeaking of the door you enter the place.

The interior is surprisingly better than what the outside of the building originally suggests. You look around the place as you walk deeper inside, searching for an empty place to sit. The room is nearly full, explaining why the port was so empty. Nobody wants to be out in the cold, not even the locals. There isn't much light, the room is illuminated by only a handful of lanterns, placed seemingly at random. You can only make out the silhouettes of various sea creatures decorating the walls along with all kinds of fishing equipment.

You manage to find an empty table all the way in the back corner and finally sit down to rest. The staff approaches you almost immediately. A tall man wearing a stained apron hands you a small booklet and before you have a chance to get a better look at him he walks away just as fast without saying a word. You don't see anybody else tending the guests, he seems to be the only one working here.

You open the menu. It is not written in a language you can speak. You can't understand a single word. Oh well, this is a port, you passed many fishing boats on your way here, most of the dishes must be fish. You decide to simply ask for something once the waiter is back. Hopefully, he can at least speak the same language as you.

You lean back on the creaky chair, close your eyes and listen to the noises of the busy restaurant. There are too many people talking all at once for you to make out anything, but that doesn't bother you. You are warm, you are safe, and soon will have a nice meal. You've been on your feet all day, travelling is exhausting, maybe this unexpected break is what you needed.

"May I take your order?"

The tall man returned, awaiting your answer with a big smile. He must have been trying to appear friendly to you, but the smile only creeps you out. You can't see the rest of his face well enough in this dim light which doesn't really help to improve his image.

You decide not to waste his time with questions about their entire list of available dishes, he must have plenty of work to do.

"Give me the best you've got please."

He smiles again, nods, and walks off. This time you follow him with your eyes through the dark and watch as he enters a different room. Through the open door, you spot several meat hooks hanging from the ceiling. That must be the kitchen.

You feel watched. You had this feeling right after you entered and the feeling only keeps getting stronger. It is too dark to see who is so interested in you. The locals probably don't have many visitors who stay around this port. And you, in your new coat you bought before the travel must stand out so much in this crowd of old torn jackets and dirty unraveling sweaters. You pull your suitcase closer to you just in case.

The order arrived much sooner than expected. Quality service you must say, you remember the times you were left waiting for hours for your meal in restaurants that were better than this one. You are not exactly sure what is lying on the plate in front of you, but it smells amazing.

You catch a glimpse of a bloodied butcher's knife behind the waiter's belt. The fish is definitely fresh.

Suddenly you realize you have no idea how you're actually going to pay for this. If the menu was in a different language, then the currency must be too! You were too hungry to think about that and check the prices before ordering.

"Excuse me, sir... I'm sorry, I don't think I can actually pay you..."

Now you just feel stupid.

He smiles at you once again with that signature smile of his. Now standing closer to you, you realize why he creeped you out so much. After all, you've never seen a person with such long sharp teeth before. And is he reaching for that knife?

"Oh don't you worry about that. We'll figure something out."
