To clarify, I'm not trying to be snarky jic my post might come off that way. I thin this is a great opportunity for Subeta to so something good in real life instead of just in the game. Like a special weekend where x% of profits go to a charity to help human trafficking victims.

Shanti had my vote. I didn't vote based on art because the art was going to be adapted to fit subeta's style regardless. I voted for the best personality.
I would love to see Kanyin used somewhere else because he looked SO cute, but I didn't think he was the best thought out entry FOR THIS PARTICULAR NPC SLOT. Fahimah was also exceptionally well-done and again, I hope to see her used elsewhere.
ALL of the entries were great and it was hard to choose.
The notion that it's "pandering" to have someone who doesn't fit more than one of the "other" boxes one can check off on a list is absurd. If you're disabled, you have to automatically be a white cishet individual because your existence is just too far from "normal?" That just shows how you view the world: that everyone who isn't like you isn't "normal," and it's just too difficult to fathom that someone could JUST HAPPEN to be that different.

Personally I think it's great subeta is bringing awareness to the issue of human trafficking and I look forward to them proving their commitment to showing us they genuinely care about this serious, real world issue with a fundraiser for a charity that specializes in helping human trafficking victims. I suggest Polaris. With such a big user base and a site that has such passion I'm sure subeta can raise a lot of money.

Can we stop talking about people's features and aspects of their lives as checking boxes? Stop looking at us like that...

who win?? sorry... i vote her too, cause i love the way the pic was drawing... like a skizze... nice...

@Nami I alllmost voted for the Dillema, for similar reasons (I also thought he was a cool entry and the hilarity of a plushie demon running a beanbag shop was not lost on me)
but then ultimately I went for Shanti because she has a crush on Quazim and the shipper in me got really exicted that maaaaaaaaaybeeee we might see some more NPC interaction of a romantic inclination? (Also she is really cute).
Overall I found it a hard pick but I love it when NPCs interact which they do a lot, and...the potential for the types of interactions here most interested me.

Why did people not have an issue with the entries when voting was open, especially given how small the entry pool was? Why only complain now? If an entry really worried you and was legitimately objectionable, speak up sooner.I have been disappointed before when my pick didn't win in a voting context, but there is no need to go on a site and insult and belittle people. You can disagree in a respectful way.
Shanti was one or many excellent entries. She might not have bee the most beautifully drawn, but an entry does not need to be perfectly drawn for it do be creative and interesting. You can get the feel of a character from a sketch and description. I also don't see how she is a "token" or a 'mary sue." Why is it always pandering anytime a non white non cishet character is represented? These people exist in the world an their existence is not "pandering", "token", or "mary sue".

It's funny, I could create a character like me but since I'm not what people force as "the norm" it would be called "pandering"
I could pick a random event from my life and make it into a short story and it would be "forced diversity"
Despite both of them being based off of real life, and by definition not forcing any gosh damned thing, people would blow a fuse over how "clearly forced, SJW PG pandering" it is.
Get over the fact that able-bodied, cisgendered, straight white people aren't the only people in this world. Aren't the only ones that consume media. And aren't the only ones worthy of having a space in stories.

I have my understandings if some people didn't prefer realistic based themes which compare with true issues in the world of reality, but could it be the power of art on Subeta itself to handle with realistic subjects on a more bearable or other great way the news hasn't. That's the difference between art and plain facts on the news I believe so.
Maybe Santhi has got a plenty sense of humor like Blake Steel or Elwood. I just try to share my thoughts the background info are in the first place ingredients to made up a character with a plenty of possibility's how it will develop.

Congrats!
I voted for the only option that wasn't a human, because we already have many human characters, wanted to see a different one for a change, too bad the pet didn't win :P

I think @Jollin hit the nail on the head with this one. But the likelihood that this character will do anything more than have a single sentence in her shop and maybe a few lines in the 'pedia is low. So ¯_(ツ)_/¯
now, more anthro NPCs plz

Ugh... More pandering. Grats to the winner, but I'm sick of the pandering mess that a lot of things have become. Gotta be all "inclusive" now, don't wanna offend anyone, am I right? And I'm saying this as someone who isn't the pinnacle of normality myself.
I hope this site doesn't become even more political and obviously left leaning over time. It's a nice fun pet site at first, but it's starting to become a liiiiittle obvious.

Having severe chronic pain i gravitated towards Shanti immediately. i loved all of the designs but Shanti stole my heart, i'm so glad she won! Grats Ursa!
@kingsman ...a concept where a character lives is worse than the concept where some kid gets thrown into the sea. It's that attitude which shames people into not talking about these things. Statements like that blame the character for imposing rape, sex slaves, and pedophilia when it's just their backstory. They lived through it, they're not perpetrating it. -_- This site has always had dark elements. People are just picky about "appropriate violence." Doesn't exist.

Congrats User not found: ursa!
Glad to see staff on the ball, deleting comments here and hopefully enforcing rules and community guidelines otherwise.
For the people who object to Shanti based on her disability/race/poverty/perceived "otherness" or whatever:

I'll never understand why we are so hostile towards each other on this site.
Anyway, congrats Ursa! I actually love how you put so much thought in not only her design, but her character as well.

Glad to see the NPC I voted for won! I really found Shanti endearing, plus the line 'something soft for my tush' really amused me.
Can't wait to see her drawn by the folks of the art team.

@Kingsman I couldn't agree more. There's a time and a place to raise awareness of awful things like that, but this was neither.

Congrats to the winner!! I am not all about child NPCs but I am sure she'll fit in great to the Subeta world.
Now WHO made Kanyin and can I draw fanart of him??? I already miss him he's so perfect and wonderful <3

At the end of the day, this character is just going to be a shopkeeper NPC; they're going to have their image in the shop, get maybe three lines in the subetapedia, and there's an extremely small chance they'll make an appearance on the rare occasion we have a plot. That's it. Nothing else if going to change because of this. An NPC who's a wheelchair user is way overdue, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the final design.
There'd be complaints regardless of who was chosen, whether any of the final six or any other entry, because this is Subeta and apparently we can't have anything new without a fight about it first.

Surprised that people are reacting this way, especially since entry =/= final product. Staff aren't going to have the exact same picture and character bullet points as the entry, this is just a scaffold for the NPC. Most of what the NPC is going to do is be a picture on top of the beanbag shop page anyway.

I've been so busy IRL I forgot this was even going on x.x however I love that character! Great job Ursa!

I don't know... this character looks a little SKETCHY...
No, but in all seriousness, Good work and congrats!

@omnibless I don't think the issue is that people don't like the character because they don't believe the situation or somethinh, it's because they dislike the concept. I know Subeta mainly has adult players who would like nonchildish NPCS and plots but I really don't think a character whose back story involves rape, sex slaves, and pedophilia involved human trafficking is appropriate for Subeta.
forgot to include inmates, elder folks and mental patients. Plenty of people are at risk of physically impairing violence.
Congratulations sweetie! I'm happy my vote and many others helped your lovely character win. :)
I shouldn't have read so far down the page >:(
Consider yourselves advantaged/sheltered if you don't believe in a disabled and human trafficked character. There are different kinds of rape rehabilitation which includes physical therapy. War hostages, abducted and sexually abused women and children exist with such trauma induced handicaps.
If their appearance alone affects you negatively, it's stemming from your own toxicity.
This character meets the criteria for a character design. Her description is rough which is where Su could step in and spruce up. Congratulations

Congrats to Ursa, Shanti is a lovely character! She wasn't the one I voted for but she was my second favorite. The only thing I personally didn't like was that she likes cheese because ew, cheese. XD I'm not sure why people are getting so worked up. I thought all the entries were great. I'm sure she'll be a welcome addition to the site!
@Disasters
I'm entirely agree with your point.
I love the difference of artistic styles on Subeta. Besides the Subetateam will work out Santhi. So she could become sketch-less and become beautiful on an little other way tough. (I hope so).
Anyway there is indeed no reason to have so much trouble with a sketch-winner at all.

Eh, I can't say I voted for her because her 'pure as sunlight' personality was boring to me but fairs fair. I'm sure she will fit in just fine.

I mean recognizable. The sketch is cool and I will be exithing how the Subetateam will Santhi works out. So exiting.

Congrats User not found: ursa. She's a cute char. I didn't vote for her, but I almost did. lol. Can't wait to see her fleshed out into a full NPC we can all love to see when we go into the beanbag shop.
Also, to all those complaining about this: grow up.

Come on people get a grip! The Subeta team asked for an underrepresented character, they got an underrepresented character.
Honestly, I think Subeta once again picked a very bad time to do this contest. Right now people are extremely tense everywhere for a wide variety of reasons (people being triggered over statues, terrorist attacks, racism on all sides, identity politics, etc...).
For the so-called "progressive" people crying out bigot, bigot, bigot... you guys are not helping. Character assassination is a cheap, petty tactic used by really insecure people who often times only want to feel good about themselves instead of doing good. Get a hug, some therapy, volunteer, aid a person in need or whatever helps you get a grip on reality. Name calling makes you look terrible and lose all validity. Find long-term solutions to problems that work for ALL people instead of complaining and getting butthurt over a person's opinion.
Instead of fighting each other over a FICTIONAL CHARACTER why don't we actually find something to agree on and move on? Agree to disagree maybe?
Yes, there is some iffy stuff about the character, but just like mental illness, sex trafficking is still to this day a very real thing happening to all types of people.
It's great to see a new character concept introduced. Congrats to the winner!
