Friends,
I don't feel like we talk enough. You call and I never answer. That's about to change.
Simply put, you are Subeta's biggest asset. We could have the fanciest rewrite, the most brilliant minds in programming, the best server setup, but without you there wouldn't be any reason. It has always been in our best interest to keep you as informed as possible, and this is something we have been neglecting to do lately. Keith Answers! was a step in the right direction, but we can do better. We’re going to try and fix that right now.
Things have been pretty exciting internally, recently! Over the last few days, we have shifted our focus, and changed the staff around. We've also moved to an entirely new server setup, which should cause fewer problems and give you a more enjoyable experience with Subeta, overall. Instead of working to keep the site alive, we can work on things that are important. Fixing bugs, adding new features, and finishing the rewrite.
I'm sure you'll notice that I mentioned the rewrite last in that sentence. A lot of you believe that the rewrite is some sort of myth, or that it is never going to happen. It will happen, and it is still being worked on by the entire programming team. However, instead of telling you that our current problems will be fixed in the rewrite, we are shifting our focus to the site that you use everyday, to make it more playable now, not later. Taking on something as large as the rewrite has taught me, personally, that you can't redo four years of hard work in a few months. Subeta is just as real as any of us, and it should be treated that way. I've found out that I can't ignore the real site, just to work on the rewrite, and I can't focus only on the main site and put the rewrite on the back burner. There has to be balance, and from this point forward there will be. Expect more announcements on the rewrite in general, as well as more serious testing in the future.
We understand you want a time line. You want a date that the rewrite will be finished. I've done this before, and ended up being months off. The rewrite is a work in progress, that you will be able to constantly check on. From this point onward, I'll be giving regular status updates on the rewrite, which should give you a clear picture of its progress and make you feel much better about it. Hopefully, we can remove this feeling that it's just a myth!
I also mentioned Subeta being on new servers! You can find more information about our setup in the near future. Based on our experiences over the last four years, we have worked hard to come up with a perfect solution that works now, and also allows us to continue growing and pushing forward later.
Of course, we aren't going to be pushing forward only in the programming department. The user administration department is also going to be getting a huge update soon, which will be something for every user. The department is starting to feel the weight of four years of creating rules, and changing rules. We’ve added a rule whenever something has gone wrong, but you can't really find them, or know what that rule is, until you're warned for it. It’s unfair to both you as users, and to our administration team that has to hunt down the rules that need to be enforced as well! That's why in the near future we will be pruning out certain rules that we feel should be determined by you, the community. Who are we to decide if you are offended by something?
This leads into the new reputation system. A few of our veterans might remember that this is something we've played with in the past. I think this new system will really be revolutionary for any site of our magnitude. This reputation system will be deeply rooted in the forums, and will essentially let you wear the moderator pants. You won't be able to see your reputation 'score', or that of any other users. You will, however, have the option to give a good or bad reputation rating to any forum, thread, or post. Depending on how much and what kind of reputation you've been given by your peers, you could be the one who locks the board, and hides it from other users. Do you find a user’s particular post offensive? Give it negative reputation.
This puts the power of moderation in your hands, and leaves our user administrators free to deal with the meatier account support issues. We don't need to lock or delete topics that don't offend anyone, or make them upset. I personally feel like it's a huge step for any site to take, and I'm glad that we're the ones taking it.
Now, I want to invite you to help us improve our site. We have added the July 2008 Bug Fix category to the Suggestion Center. We want you to submit one (one per person, please!) bug that affects your everyday usage of Subeta. Something that annoys you more than anything else. Before you run off to make this bug report, please check that category and see if it's already been reported. The more time we spend sorting through them, the less time we have to actually fix them!
You may think that you're powerless or that you have very little impact on Subeta, but in reality you are all the driving force behind Subeta. If we make a change that does not agree with the whole community, we are usually quick to change it back, or make it better. You're creative when we aren't, and you're quick to think of how to improve something. That's why I'd like to point you to the suggestion center, which is ALWAYS open for your ideas. If you think of something that you think would be perfect for the (shh!) hidden island, don't hesitate to suggest it. Your fellow users appreciate this kind of creativity, as it gives them more to do as well.
Before we go, I'd like to remind you that Subeta is 100% user supported. Today we added a small unobtrusive text ad to the top of the forums. This small advertisement will help support the site in the near future, and we understand your concern about ads. I hate them as much (or more) as the next person, and am proud that Subeta is usually able to be supported without advertisements. We also don't sell your information to third parties. The cash shop paves the way for new programmers, new hardware, payment for the User Admins who help you from day to day, and help with the planning of future projects. We rely on your purchases, and at this time of growth and expansion it is going to be more important than ever. I know that we've had a lot of downtime lately, and you're probably hesitant to put down any amount of money; however I'm hoping that everyone realizes the impact that these changes are going to have. We feel confident, based on the changes we have already made, that you will not be disappointed. You can still help in other ways, too! Link to Subeta from your blog, or facebook/myspace. Bringing in new users is just as important as raising funds.
I'm sure that some of you are thinking you'd prefer this to be a youtube segment, with us talking face to face (so to speak). However, I feel that a medium that 100% of the users can see, and intake is the best for this type of message. However, I'm inviting you to go here where you can ask questions related to this announcement, and a special Keith answers segment will be dedicated to them.
Thank you for all of your support and understanding. Over the past four years I have grown a lot, and so has Subeta and its staff. I hope that we can spend many more years growing together.

YAY SUBETA!!!! Let's get some more users in!!
Thank you for the informative post =) Even though I don't use the forums alot and the reputation rating would give staff a tool to look at I want to add my concern over the opportunity for abuse by other members. I would hope that you could also put in place a check and balance system that showed how much a self appointed member was reporting people.
On a more positive note....Yeah for Keith and Staff ! Subeta Forever!

Well said. Openness like this is exactly what Subeta's users need.
From my experiences in other sites that use this forum format I can say that for the most part reputation systems work, but it usually ends up being a popularity contest. This implementation and the fact that reps are hidden both are steps in the right direction though.
I'm glad things are looking up; I see bright things in the future for Subeta.
Cheers

Thank you Keith for your honesty and your openmindedness. Of course I will continue to support this site. Even though I play on it for free, I would like to thank you and your staff for the wonderful opportunity you have given us "free loaders". I love the site and I know you and your hard working staff are responsible for that. Thank you for that and keep up the good work.
Thank you Keith for the updates! I will continue to support you!! I'm a little uneasy about the reputation thing, but I'm not on forums much anyway and I'll wait to see how it works!
does a dance
Thanks, Keith!
Though I do think that the forum reputation thing will be abused .
Don't really understand about the recode, but I'll go along with it - just PLEASE don't make the pets vectors with eyelashes and fists! xP
Thanks, Keith!

Thank you for the long explanation. I hope things go smoothly for you, staff, and the users of Subeta.

Keith, your post was appreciated and respected. This is what sets Subeta apart from other sites and why I support it.

Well said Keith I'm sure things will move forawds from here too and Subeta will flourish. You have all our support and the staff too. Thanks for the HUGE post by the way . awww, that just made me love keith subeta even more =D
I don't like the sound of the forum rep idea. I can see it being abused to hell and back. Someone disagreed with you politely? Minus rep. Saw someone you hold a grudge against? Minus rep. Your best friend made some meaningless post? Plus rep. It makes the popular into mods and that could be disastrous. I'll just steer clear of the forums for a while when it is implemented. See how it works before jumping in.
The rest? Well done. No more to say there

Thankyou for the update, Keith!

Subeta is really one of my favorite sites ever, and I hope its around for a lot longer. I always know I can come here when I need someone to talk to about friend issues, because the users here are so friendly. No other pet site could pull this off like subeta.
I love you subeta, Keith, and the staff. Thank you so much for giving me a place to go when Ive had enough of the real life drama.

Damn good announcement, Keith. This is the kind of post I think we were all waiting for eventually. I'm here to show my support and keep this site up and running. For the users and by the users is one of the best policies ever.

Keith, I think I appreciated -this- post the most, above all others. The lack of communication was one of the (albeit small) disappointments of Subeta for me, and it is a fantastic and wonderful step that it will be improved. I do think that the majority appreciates as much information as you can toss our way.
It's great to hear that the rules will be revamped too, and the new reputation system sounds promising - especially in light of the fact that you have had forethought on how to prevent its abuse.
Keep the Keith's Answers coming too! I have yet to hear a British accent. LOL Kudos for a heartfelt and informative letter to the users.

Your business sense continues to astound me. Your site is the first that I am willing to learn and grow with (since I walked away after 5 years at another). Thanks for that.
Thanks for the update, Keith! We love you. Hugs.
Hm... I don't know how I feel about the whole forum reputation thing. I think as long as users are honest and not just trying to be mean to someone, it'll work out just fine.
Just a question - is the ad thing going to be permanent? I know you said in a previous news post that you're not interested in such a thing, but I'd just like clarification because they sounded kinda permanent in this news post.
Keep up the good work, you guys!

Okay I must say the Reputation System scares me. I worry about people locking boards just because they disagree with the person who made it or have a personal issue with that user. I'm sure you have thought of this but I need to know more before I get behind it.

Thanks for your honesty. I will keep coming back to Subeta, the good outweigh the bad. Just keep plugging along and we will support you. I just want to mention that it was near impossible for me to log in here XP I tried my password, it didn't work, so I tried everything else I could think of. No luck. Then I tried to have it sent, and it kept telling me that I could only have it sent once every 10 minutes. It never sent one...
I finally just kept trying every few days, and finally got in! ^o^

Thank you for this update~
Go Keith and everyone working to keep up Subeta! Been here 3 years and never seen better staff anywhere. (Of course, excluding the... others.)

Good job Keith and Subeta Team ^.^ Thanks for much for being so user oriented. It makes me (and probably a lot of users here) feel special and loved.
I'm a little concerned about the user reputation, however. I was here to experience it, but I didn't get to use it much. What if Person A gives Person B a bad reputation simply because Person A doesn't like Person B? As many people have already stated, it may turn into a popularity contest/hate war. -feels a little nervous-
Just my thoughts ^^ In any case, many many thanks for everything, Keith and Subeta Team. You're doing such an awesome job on this site.

Thanks for such an in depth and detailed note. My biggest complaint for some time now has just been the feeling of always being kept in the dark about what is going on. The new features and re-focus are all great, but I think the increase in communication is what I am most excited about. THANK YOU!
I cannot imagine the incredible amount of stress you and the Subeta team must be under at the moment. It would be so simple just to let things go and move on to greener pastures. I admire your loyalty to us and the site. Thank you for your sacrifices and tenacity.
Thank you for the printed word - We're on dial-up and can't receive the u-tube 'interviews'

I agree with some users posted earlier here; forum reputation sounds nice, but it can be used as a tool to attack other users. I think it's better to ask the people who rate provide their reasons for rating, but it might take up too much spaces and slows down the site.
I share the sentiments of worry with the reputation system - Fear that it may be abused, but also finding that it'll be quite useful.
Glad to hear that everything is going to be brought directly to our attention.
One of the things I love most about this site - User interaction. You guys really do care about us.

Wow, Keith. I'm really impressed with this post. So eloquent, well-written, friendly, approachable, all of that. Mucho props to you for that.
Now I barely use the forum (I rather like getting e-mail notifications when there are responses to things, else I forget), so the rep system doesn't really affect me.
However I'm about to go see if someone hasn't reported the vending machines as broken, cos a good chunk of my income comes from stuff I vend.
Anyway, cracking good post, love your work, I'm very impressed because you're actually younger than me (by a year!) but present yourself as a smart, knowledgeable young adult. Keep up the good work!

I'm proud of you Keith. I hope that the best is yet to come for Subeta.

Are us MM's going to even be needed now?
I don't spend much time in the forums (posting nor lurking) or public places of Subeta, a Subeta loner if you will. XD
Still keeping that in mind, I want to say it's nice to get see it this way that the administration don't seem to have flown up in the clouds and remember that the best solution to keeping it real is to stay grounded as many other administration of popular sites has done! =3
I was very happy when I read this! ^^
I'm extremely sleepy atm, so i apologize if I got this wrong XD;
Giving some mod power given to users with "good reputation"? I'm a bit scared of that idea. =/
Not that it wouldn't affect me much since I don't roam so much in the forums lol, but after being a moderator years on a high activity site, it really does sound like a feature that will be abused... Even moderators abuse their position. ._. We have a system at the site, when you report a post, you can chose to remove the post out of public view until a mod can look it over to see if it' something to be deleted or not. I'm just really scared of false lovable people get enough rep, to do what s/he and abusing this feature, and since s/he is popular, it's hard to say anything against this person... It's hard enough when seemingly good mods go bad. I've just seen the latter happen way to many times not to say anything... ._.
I don't need any reply to this, I'm just throwing it out there so that it's out there. 83

Thank you for the gigantic update. I like the idea of the reputation system, but we'll have to see how it all works out.
