Friends,
I don't feel like we talk enough. You call and I never answer. That's about to change.
Simply put, you are Subeta's biggest asset. We could have the fanciest rewrite, the most brilliant minds in programming, the best server setup, but without you there wouldn't be any reason. It has always been in our best interest to keep you as informed as possible, and this is something we have been neglecting to do lately. Keith Answers! was a step in the right direction, but we can do better. We’re going to try and fix that right now.
Things have been pretty exciting internally, recently! Over the last few days, we have shifted our focus, and changed the staff around. We've also moved to an entirely new server setup, which should cause fewer problems and give you a more enjoyable experience with Subeta, overall. Instead of working to keep the site alive, we can work on things that are important. Fixing bugs, adding new features, and finishing the rewrite.
I'm sure you'll notice that I mentioned the rewrite last in that sentence. A lot of you believe that the rewrite is some sort of myth, or that it is never going to happen. It will happen, and it is still being worked on by the entire programming team. However, instead of telling you that our current problems will be fixed in the rewrite, we are shifting our focus to the site that you use everyday, to make it more playable now, not later. Taking on something as large as the rewrite has taught me, personally, that you can't redo four years of hard work in a few months. Subeta is just as real as any of us, and it should be treated that way. I've found out that I can't ignore the real site, just to work on the rewrite, and I can't focus only on the main site and put the rewrite on the back burner. There has to be balance, and from this point forward there will be. Expect more announcements on the rewrite in general, as well as more serious testing in the future.
We understand you want a time line. You want a date that the rewrite will be finished. I've done this before, and ended up being months off. The rewrite is a work in progress, that you will be able to constantly check on. From this point onward, I'll be giving regular status updates on the rewrite, which should give you a clear picture of its progress and make you feel much better about it. Hopefully, we can remove this feeling that it's just a myth!
I also mentioned Subeta being on new servers! You can find more information about our setup in the near future. Based on our experiences over the last four years, we have worked hard to come up with a perfect solution that works now, and also allows us to continue growing and pushing forward later.
Of course, we aren't going to be pushing forward only in the programming department. The user administration department is also going to be getting a huge update soon, which will be something for every user. The department is starting to feel the weight of four years of creating rules, and changing rules. We’ve added a rule whenever something has gone wrong, but you can't really find them, or know what that rule is, until you're warned for it. It’s unfair to both you as users, and to our administration team that has to hunt down the rules that need to be enforced as well! That's why in the near future we will be pruning out certain rules that we feel should be determined by you, the community. Who are we to decide if you are offended by something?
This leads into the new reputation system. A few of our veterans might remember that this is something we've played with in the past. I think this new system will really be revolutionary for any site of our magnitude. This reputation system will be deeply rooted in the forums, and will essentially let you wear the moderator pants. You won't be able to see your reputation 'score', or that of any other users. You will, however, have the option to give a good or bad reputation rating to any forum, thread, or post. Depending on how much and what kind of reputation you've been given by your peers, you could be the one who locks the board, and hides it from other users. Do you find a user’s particular post offensive? Give it negative reputation.
This puts the power of moderation in your hands, and leaves our user administrators free to deal with the meatier account support issues. We don't need to lock or delete topics that don't offend anyone, or make them upset. I personally feel like it's a huge step for any site to take, and I'm glad that we're the ones taking it.
Now, I want to invite you to help us improve our site. We have added the July 2008 Bug Fix category to the Suggestion Center. We want you to submit one (one per person, please!) bug that affects your everyday usage of Subeta. Something that annoys you more than anything else. Before you run off to make this bug report, please check that category and see if it's already been reported. The more time we spend sorting through them, the less time we have to actually fix them!
You may think that you're powerless or that you have very little impact on Subeta, but in reality you are all the driving force behind Subeta. If we make a change that does not agree with the whole community, we are usually quick to change it back, or make it better. You're creative when we aren't, and you're quick to think of how to improve something. That's why I'd like to point you to the suggestion center, which is ALWAYS open for your ideas. If you think of something that you think would be perfect for the (shh!) hidden island, don't hesitate to suggest it. Your fellow users appreciate this kind of creativity, as it gives them more to do as well.
Before we go, I'd like to remind you that Subeta is 100% user supported. Today we added a small unobtrusive text ad to the top of the forums. This small advertisement will help support the site in the near future, and we understand your concern about ads. I hate them as much (or more) as the next person, and am proud that Subeta is usually able to be supported without advertisements. We also don't sell your information to third parties. The cash shop paves the way for new programmers, new hardware, payment for the User Admins who help you from day to day, and help with the planning of future projects. We rely on your purchases, and at this time of growth and expansion it is going to be more important than ever. I know that we've had a lot of downtime lately, and you're probably hesitant to put down any amount of money; however I'm hoping that everyone realizes the impact that these changes are going to have. We feel confident, based on the changes we have already made, that you will not be disappointed. You can still help in other ways, too! Link to Subeta from your blog, or facebook/myspace. Bringing in new users is just as important as raising funds.
I'm sure that some of you are thinking you'd prefer this to be a youtube segment, with us talking face to face (so to speak). However, I feel that a medium that 100% of the users can see, and intake is the best for this type of message. However, I'm inviting you to go here where you can ask questions related to this announcement, and a special Keith answers segment will be dedicated to them.
Thank you for all of your support and understanding. Over the past four years I have grown a lot, and so has Subeta and its staff. I hope that we can spend many more years growing together.

Hm, I have to agree with the others about the Reputation System. I hardly think users will be fair. x(

Kieth and Staff, Thank you for the update and the sincere efforts for site improvements.
The site working and working in good fashion is the most important issue on subeta.
As far as the forums, I'm not sure your plan will work, but it's worth trying...I think the forums on subeta are already leaps and bounds better than other sites I play on. (And I wouldn't play on the other sites if subeta was 99% dependable.)
Hang in there! This is a great site with creative genius!

What I dislike about that system, is the fact that we are being judged on a point based system. We are humans not video games no one has any right to 'rate' you.
Awww gives Keith a hug and a pie This post really makes us feel good... at least, it gives me the warm fuzzies ^__^
Yeah I like ALOT the idea of you working on the site we play on now.. lately I havent been here much because of all the problems, knowing the here and now will be made better will keep me around, and more supportive. I am sure the recode will be nice, dont care like the site now.. except for things that are broken.. This is a very positive move.. please see it through
If any reputation system at all goes into place, I will boycott the forums. There is no way to "fix" a system so that people will not abuse it, marking down the people they don't like and boosting their friends. And using it to replace the mini-mods is even worse, because then there's no one to govern the forums except for the UAs.
This post is so appreciated, Keith. I am really blown away, and feel like you've put a lot of thought and time into this. Thank you.
Alrighty, Keith. Let's all give this system another shot, then. xD

also the I would like to be able to see my reputation though
just not anyone else
because if you don't know your reputation is down, how can you fix yourself/learn from your mistakes
and etcc
but nicely put on everything else.

It's a few steps in the right direction, Keith, and I have to admit I'm somewhat proud of your attitude.
I think it's funny how the post is about giving user more information and what not. But yet, I feel the important issue is where the subeta.org situation is at. How come, we are not receiving any information on that? Are you scared to tell us? Or has nothing really happened?
I'm impressed with how informative, well-thought and mature this news post is. Thanks Keith for reaching out to the users and understanding our frustrations when we don't know what is going on. I appreciate that you are keeping us informed about upcoming changes, and I'm sure they will be excellent when they are fully installed.
Just curious though... what's up with .org? Does it redirect to .ws now or should we still be ignoring .org and staying here. I'm a bit confuzzled!

Rabbit, please read the topic (and the other information I've posted) before you make an assumption.
Yes - at first thought, there are a lot of ways to have this system abused. However, I've thought about most of them, and made sure that it's not easy (at all) to be abused, and by the time that you've found a good way to do it, you'll have your reputation reset by a UA anyway.

Keith:
There is a reason the reputation system did not work. In fact, there are several. The main one I am concerned about relates to Subeta "cliques."
These little cliques tend to gang up on one another and fight over very little... With the reputation points in the hands of users... You never know how that will go. One bad troll with a multiple account could go around marking negatives on people who dont deserve it.
This leads to a new problem in itself...
MORE WORK FOR THE MODS.
Your heart is in the right place, it always has been, Keith... Ive been here since the very, very beginning of Subeta, and have watched it grow... The users are the biggest assets... However, they are no mods. This system could be used to harm as much as it could be to help... Perhaps if we had our say in other ways. How, I am not sure.
As I said... Your heart is in the right place, however... Keith, lets leave staff duties to staff. Thats why they are staff. They get paid to keep the peace that we users sometimes test. They have enough work on thier plates without this little... Reputation system... ;D

This post made me cry out of happiness. Thank the gods you're trying to reconnect with us, rather than becoming some faceless entity to be feared, as you were while the two dictators were still on staff. I've always taken pride in the fact that Subeta's staff is the most helpful of any site I've visited. Again, this is something that I've been waiting to reoccur. I've missed you, staffers.
The heart of any community is people who listen...well done and hats off to one and all! =D
Thank you, Keith, for this news post.
I'm glad to see you and the Subeta Team are going to work on these things. You are getting better and better every day not only as a leader, but as a person. We all love and support you, Keith. Just thought I'd point out that all the link back buttons say Subeta.org and they direct you there instead of here. I can change the code before I post it somewhere but does anyone have an updated button we can all use for now?

Keith- thank you so much. I am so impressed with you and the staff, and how when things aren't working out within the community of the site - not just with the technical issues, a solution is given as quickly as possible and according to my memory seems well thought out. I love that you guys listen to us.
This is THE EXACT reason why I joined Subeta and actually stuck around. Because the staff was so involved, cooperative, and helpful. Keep up the good work, I am sure it will bring more newbies in and win them over as well.
SO IN SHORT, thanks for this post, for caring about your users, and for stepping back to re-evaluate previous choices for the site and notice if they were or still are the best choice for the site.

LoopyLee - right now wearables can be toys.
Right now we have no intention of making Minions wearable, for the prime reason that they already have one of the biggest uses other than wearables on the site. Other items (toys, etc) need this use (being made wearable) far more than minions do.
Maybe sometime in the distant future it will happen, but I doubt it. I understand that a lot of people want it, and it'd be fun - but it's just not feasible

If all of us users are so important does this mean the rule about wearables not being able to be toys will be dumped ?.I doubt it. I find users being the most important thing hard to believe too. I am a user who collected one particular item. I didnt count back when this rule came into affect so I doubt I will count now.
I think the forum reputation is a good thing...
Setting up a system for marking suspected "bad" forums so they can keep tabs on what's going on and who's doing it, even if it goes so far to allowing users to close down topics.

I am at a loss for words, and will simply say that this is the reason that Subeta is my all time favorite site. Rock on Subeta Staff!

No matter what you think we'll always have your back Keith. Your doing a very good job at keeping this place together. Thank you much.
I can't get to the link, but Keith, I hope this is only for recent comments, topics, whatever within a certain period of time?
Some people have thousands of topics, they shouldn't be repped for all of them from years ago. shrugs

I was concerned about the potential for abuse with the reputation system, but after reading Keith's comment , not any more. In theory it sounds like a great idea and I'm curious to see how it works out once it's implemented.
Wow that's a big announcement! Thanks for keeping us all up to date on what's happening again. It's great to see Subeta moving forward. You guys rock!

Wow. Huge wall of text. But seriously, thanks for the announcement Keith. It's great that you tell us these things. (Also, forum reputations=awesome)

I'm glad Keith and the rest of the team are working so hard to keep this site going, especially with the recent dot-org fiasco. Subeta and Keith FTW! If I could afford it, I would send Keith a hundred bucks right now.
Well... question about .org too... is it still taken?
Cause the news are all the same, and they were up at the very same time... It looks like it's back to being all the same site (.org and .ws)
This is all really confusing! I'm seriously giving up on Subeta for now cause I'm getting annoyed by all this mess... I love this huge post with many infrmation but Keith, you said NOTHING about this recent mess!
I need to know what site we should be using, will we ever go back to .org??

I must say I'm impressed.
Even with all the technical and ex-staff problems lately there has been a serious upgrade in the PR department. As much as downtime is annoying not knowing why the site is down has always annoyed me much more. Through all the troubles of late Staff have gone out of their way to keep players informed and that encourages me to be patient and stick with the site instead of being pissed off at it. It's good to see Subeta returning to it's strengths, customer service and actually listening to the users. Letting us decide what we want for the site, instead of dictating to them what they should want the site to be. If you can come through with all the technical upgrades you are promising to go along with the improved customer service there will be a bright, shinning future for Subeta.

Wow, I remember the reputation system in truth it was kinda annoying I hope the new one is better. I don't have a facebook or a myspace actully, I have a YouTube though. That was alot to read, Keith-sama I don't think I've every seen you whight to much, hehe. It really dose show that you care, and we all know you care. ";I support Keith, and his plushies. Do you"; I'm making a banner that says that.
I knew there was a reason I loved this site. Go Keith!
Well if the reputation system has checks on it - it might work. If you can keep track of who adds to a reputation - people on friends lists etc, if someone actually reads the occasional post that warranted a + rep point , if people dont suddenly start speed posting friendly helpful posts just to get their rep boosted, if people cant have sigs saying like my post - boost my rep!.
If it all works then it is a way for members to basically elect their own mods.
