Rakover's Notes:

I found her wandering in the woods, naked and bewildered and a little bit angry. There were tear tracks in the dirt stains on her face, and her voice was hoarse when she spoke to me. She was skeptical of me, a talking insect offering his assistance. But I was determined to assist, and to make her want me to. I know a dragon child when I see one. In her natural state (by which I mean, when she's not dying her hair or painting herself with temporary tattoos or experimenting with various tinctures), she has blue skin, white hair, and eyes that are like living hazel gems (which will one day brew with fire). I’ve read of her kind over and over, but I have never read of quite her circumstances. Sure, I have read of beings trapped in a world not their own, but I have never read of this double fault: trapped in a world not her own AND a body not her own. She has no idea how she landed here; she said she was playing in the forest surrounding her village, just like she did everyday, but that one day she fell through a loophole in time and space. She was rolling through the grass, suddenly felt disoriented, tried to stand up but fell over, and discovered her human body. She looked up, and the trees were different. I would imagine that’s when she started crying and calling frantically for her parents, but she never tells me that part. “I searched for my clan for two days, and then I found you,” she always finishes. “Actually, I found you,” I always correct her, “And your voice was quite hoarse when I found you.” “I was trying to find them.” “And crying.” She always gives me a deep pout and a stubborn glare when I say that. It amuses me, so I keep saying it.

Lately though, she hasn’t been telling me the story at all. She’s tired of it. “Rak,” she says with a frustrated puff of air through her lips which billows the hair hanging down in her face, “I’ve told you a million times, a billion. I don’t know what it was, I don’t have anything more to tell you-” “Anything, anything else you can remember-” “No! I’m telling you, there was nothing, and then there was everything, and there was nothing more to it!”

But I’ve got to know what it is. You see, I’m a student of the mystic, the magical, the paranormal. Knowledge is power, and if I could unlock a doorway to other worlds… I would be a King. A King of Doorways. And I like the sound of that. Magic is the whole reason I allied myself with the dragon child in the first place. Here was a youngling with dragon blood, alone and lost, in need of help, and I was going to be that help. The Universe handed me a chance and I grabbed onto it as hard as I could. One day, she will be powerful, and her magic will aid me in my pursuits. I can mold her mind, so she will listen to my counsel later. I have proved myself useful so far, at least.

I had been out questing abnormalities, so it took us awhile to get back to civilization. I would have kept us out in the wilderness, to study our abilities and train on our own, but she’s a growing creature. Berries, roots, and leaves will not satisfy a dragon child for long, and neither of us had the ability to hunt, so back to civilization we went. We bought clothes for her from a traveling caravan we met along the way, and she’s less averse to wearing them than I thought she might be. She shrugged when I mentioned it. “Where I come from, dragons decorate themselves with various items all the time. The beasts do too. Children don’t though.” Which explains why she was showing signs of concealed giddiness when I first mentioned her needing clothing. She feels adult now, I suppose. The only difficulty was trying to explain the need to cover certain parts of her body. She doesn’t quite understand that bit, but she complies, trusting me to know what I’m talking about when I said it was necessity for being accepted into this new world.

{Rakover's Notes, cont.}

She definitely has an odd taste in clothing; currently she’s wearing ghost stockings which a new friend gave her, overall shorts, a glow-in-the-dark skeleton tank top, purple slides, and blue sunglasses pushed up on top of her pile of purple hair. They’re for style only; her dragon eyes do not need shade. She can see perfectly well in both the bright light and the deep dark. She also has white star temporary tattoos pressed onto her left arm, and has several radioactive life-like dolls prancing around her feet at all times. The idea of random-magic enabled artificial life actually creeps me out a bit, since they act alive but actually have no mind, but she thinks they’re “cute.”

A lot of things about her bewilder me actually, and if they do not bewilder, they at least catch me off guard. There are a lot of things that my books never told me. They told me some things, like that she would be arrogant and stubborn, and constantly feel herself superior, despite her younger age; that she would like collecting things, that riches would entice her, as well as murky dwelling places. She wanted to live in the Underground beneath Shadowglen. I put my foot down. All of them, actually. We live on the outskirts of Shengui Guo, because that is where I want to live, and she consoles herself in that, “At least it is very pretty.” If it looks at least a little expensive, she is appeased. I got the house through an old favor, and so don’t pay anything for it at all, but I let her know how much we would be paying if we didn’t have a favor to turn in, and she was made happy. She still insists on spending a lot of time in and beneath Shadowglen though.

She's also decided to be vegetarian - her reasoning for this seems complicated, and at some point I stopped listening - and she's always buying strange foods from the local markets in Shengui Guo. In fact, now that I think about it, she might have sat too long with one of the local gurus, since most folks here are vegetarian... vegan, even... Whatever makes her happy. I don't care what she eats, as long as she doesn't expect me to trade in my hamburgers for her lotus roots.

COMPANIONS:

ABSOLUM

Other things my books didn’t prepare me for, was how she would make friends so readily (I had always thought dragons unsociable, but it turns out that they like their own close friends, just not so much the rest of the world), that she would be so ready to work (she is always running errands for people, mainly the Wizard; I always thought dragons above simple labor), and that she would be enraptured by the idea of bringing home a Zentu. A decision we both now regret, though I regret it more often than she does.

TORION

Our next companion was Torion. I can't remember how he came to live with us, actually - he just showed up one day, I think. Or perhaps she found him on the side of the road, I don't know. However he came to us, he's become so much a part of our daily life that I don't really have to think about him at all, which is preferable in a housemate, in my opinion.

NAMESAKE

Namesake is Torion's brother, and some nice muscle to have around, though he actually spends most of his time writing. I am ashamed to say that the only job I could find for him in the beginning was as a candy taster - far below his skill level - but now he is comfortably positioned at The Sable Smithy. He seems to have lived a lot of lives, and in one of them he informed me he was a blacksmith. He's had to start back from the beginning, but I'm sure he'll prove himself quickly.

ArloAkka

Out of everyone, Arlo is probably Zvi's best friend. Arlo loves to bake, and Zvi loves to eat the things she bakes, so they make a good pair. Arlo is a bit more mature than Zvi, so she's a bit like an older sister to her, but Zvi is of a difficult age to pin down, so friends her own age are a bit hard to find. I've caught her napping on Arlo's back a few times, and it's pretty cute. Don't tell her I said that though - she's not allowed to know that she's cute.

Phosphore

We should really stop taking in witches and enchanted beings, but Zvi seems to attract them like mosquitoes. Phosphore is a witch and a student at the local academy, so she mostly spends her summers with us. She's fascinated by Zvi, but she better not get any big ideas, because if she starts to interfere with my work she WILL mysteriously disappear. I don't care how upset Zvi gets.

Nathen

Nathen is Zvi's pet. He used to be a brilliant architect, by Tor's account, but has been reduced by a curse to this bundle of madness. I've been trying to find ways to restore his mind, though I feel like if I do, Zvi will actually be disappointed. She treats him like a naughty puppy and doesn't seem to be able to get mad at him when he destroys her things.

Ntseni

Ntseni is a business minded individual who has turned the back of our house into a coffee shop. I'm still not sure how I feel about this.

Ketchum

I feel uncomfortable including Ketchum in this list as he should not technically be considered alive, but I do believe my charge has acquired a possessed toy. She won't let me destroy it. I have made the mistake of making known my desire, and now if it goes missing she'll know who to blame. I have not yet worked up the energy to endure her wrath, so the talking toy lives on.
