Rakover's Notes:

"As soon as Zvi first set foot in Shengui Guo, she was enamored with the Zentu. They’re everywhere in Shengui, hauling farm stuffs to market, getting their nails painted in local salons, discussing the news in deep husky voices on street corners. They’re the laborers of the city, but also a strange sort of royalty. The farmers wouldn’t be able to get their work done without them, and this city would never have been built in the first place if the Zentu weren’t there to haul timber over the mountains and help set heavy poles in the ground for their buildings, so their work is an honor, and they are honored for doing it. Which is why there’s an entire portion of the Bathhouse dedicated to them, and when Zvi found out that if you went in there and gave one a name they approved of and a satisfactory piece of jewelry, they would belong to you, she was very excited. We had to go at once, and she thought up a name, swam over to the residing Zentu and proposed it to him, he liked it, we gave him a necklace, and it was settled. Absolum was one of us now.

Zentu are vain creatures, and Absolum is one of the most vain I have ever met. I began to realize this very quickly, but Zvi only began to notice after about the third day of trying to give him food. He only eats sweets, for one thing, and he fancies himself a food connoisseur. “I’ve had better,” he will say, wrinkling up his trunk over a tart. Or, “That was disgusting!” about a piece of cake. Who says that about cake? I would have happily eaten it for him. But my favorite was this one: “Feed that to me again and I’ll bite your hand off!” That was over a muffin. Zvi bristled. She had finally had enough. She went off on him full-volume, and by the time she’d said her piece they were both very red in the face, had stomped off in different directions, and wouldn’t talk to each other for the rest of the day.

It’s traditional for Zentu to be hand fed by their keepers. Absolum no longer lives the life of a traditional Zentu. He buys his own food now, and feeds it to himself.

Absolum also has secret reading habits, except they aren’t so secret as he thinks, since I’ve found out about them. He has a weakness for really sappy bits of romantic fiction. Also pop culture magazines. I tried reading one of them once and exploded into laughter, so it was fortunate that no one else was in the house. I’m saving this knowledge for an opportune moment to use it against him. The only reading anyone else ever sees him doing is flipping through the occasional cookbook - though he's never cooked anything. I think he just likes the pictures.

He started out working at the grocer, along with me, but he's too good for such a menial job, so he works at the museum now. He's been slowly moving up the ranks, starting out as an intern, now a tour guide... if you let him get started, he'll wax poetic about various obscure pieces of art. He might actually read art history pamphlets from his job more than he reads trash fiction, at this point.

He also used to carry Zvi around on her errands, but he's lazy and doesn't like to do it, so when she really needs to travel someplace that's too far to get to on foot, she gets Arlo to carry her. She doesn't complain the whole way like Absolum does, either, so she's by far and large the better travel companion.

What is Absolum truly good for? To be honest, I have no idea. I think the idea of kicking him out has never crossed Zvi's mind, but it has certainly crossed mine. She'll never go for it though. He belongs to her. She can't just abandon him. Besides, she likes to poke fun at him. She breaks into peals of laughter when he stomps his giant feet in annoyance. What can I say? The child has a soft spot of eccentric companions."
