Jack Cardale

Agent Jack Cardale is the current leader of the Subeta Agency of Investigation (SAI). He has featured heavily in plots and site events throughout the years. Cardale resides at SAI Headquarters, located on the western half of the northernmost continent, Ytiva, aka The Arctic Frost. He has an NPC user account and is also the shopkeeper of the Forum Shop. Six (6) Subeta items available to users are directly named after him and/or depict his image.

Appearance [ edit ]
Cardale has brown hair and green eyes. He is most often shown wearing a white shirt, a tie, black pants, and black gloves. In previous art, his tie was black; in the latest version it is red. Cardale sports an SAI headset that consists of one greenish-hued lens, a microphone, and an antenna on his left side, and one headphone covering his ear on his right. Some versions include an earbud on his left side. The earliest version lacks the antenna, and the most recent lacks the microphone. Earlier art had Cardale appearing adolescent-age and quite slim, in the current revamp he seems to be both older and more muscular.

Personality [ edit ]

Cardale is extremely hands-on in his leadership style. He is the public face of the SAI, the only agent who is seen to issue press releases and make officially sanctioned, on-the-record comments to the media. When additional help has been needed for large-scale investigations in the past, Jack has often shown up to appeal directly to the citizens of Subeta and thank and praise them for their efforts. He also does intake and processes evidence directly from the public, and the only time we've seen the SAI arrest anyone, Jack showed up himself to take them into custody. He currently personally greets Subetans who arrive to visit the resulting prisoner in the SAI maximum security holding cell.

Jack Cardale is always learning. Jack is far from perfect, in fact he’s made major mistakes in all three main plots he’s been involved in so far. However, he has demonstrated the ability to admit when he is wrong (once he realizes it), to apologize sincerely, and to take responsibility and attempt to fix any damage caused by his blunders. He also hasn’t made the same mistake twice- if anything, he tends to try and overcompensate for his errors by going too far in the opposite direction the next time around. His sense of professionalism, as well, seems to have grown by leaps and bounds over the years.

Jack Cardale is a man who wears many hats; leader, investigator, scientist, spokesperson, law enforcement agent, public relations outreach specialist, and, at times, hero.On a DnD alignment chart Jack Cardale falls handily into the ‘Lawful Good’ category with only the smallest of caveats.

Creator and Early Lore [ edit ]

Quetzal [ edit ]

Jack Cardale was originally drawn and written by former staff member Quetzal. Like many early staff members, Quetzal had an NPC alter ego, Captain Quetzal. As an NPC she was a member of the alliance of Count Awesome (staff member Cydewinder's NPC alter ego) and has a plushie named after her. As a user, Quetzal owns the pet names "Keith" and "Cydewinder". It is unknown whether she still visits Subeta, but if not then she probably has some form of immunity to inactive account name clearing.

Quetzal seems to have had an (entirely understandable) tongue-in-cheek crush on her own creation. The text of the Jack Cardale Plushie reads, in part “... rabid fangirls will make an attempt to steal it, including Quetzal. But that doesn't matter, because Jack belongs to Quetzal. And Jack likes Quetzal. So ha. xD”

In March 2007, another staff member apparently briefly changed the plushie's description and Quetzal was unhappy. For a few weeks, the description read "Someone stop changing this. Jack belongs to Quetzal." Around April 8, 2007 the description was changed to the current one. It is speculated in some quarters that one reason Jack Cardale has never yet been involved in a romantic NPC relationship is because current staff still feels that Jack... belongs to Quetzal.

Rise To Power [ edit ]

Jack Cardale is not the first leader of the SAI. That honor belonged to a young Demi, who was both the founder and the first leader of the SAI. Unfortunately, after courageously leading the SAI for several years through a series of extremely dark events, the young Demi’s mind began to be affected, a dark power overtaking him. He could no longer effectively lead a growing organization and was asked by the other higher-ups of SAI to step down.

Many things about this time are unknowns. What were the series of dark events? We don't know, it is only said that they were SO dark that no storyteller dares to relay them, but presumably at least some in the SAI are privy to the facts of that time. Did the members of the SAI fully realize what was happening to their leader? Did anyone try to get him help? We are told in the Subetapedia that he concealed his condition to a large degree, and what they saw was that he had trouble concentrating on the events around him. Was Jack Cardale a member of the SAI at this time? Was he one of the higher-ups who asked the Demi to step down? Or was he recruited from outside afterwards? We don't know.

What was the young Demi's name?

We don't even know that, and there is a good– or rather, very bad– reason for our ignorance.

Upon being asked to step down, the poor Demi's mind snapped completely and he went mad, giving in to the temptation of the Dark Side. He made a show of agreeing peaceably, but later that night he broke into the SAI Headquarters (the first and last break-in to ever occur there) and burned every single record relating to its founding and his own identity. He then left to seek ultimate power, declaring his new identity to be “the Darkheart Phantom”. More about Darkheart’s subsequent adventures can be read on his Subetapedia page.

So this was the SAI Jack Cardale inherited; an organization reeling from the heavy blow of losing both their founder and most of their records, rocked by the scandal of their former leader publicly declaring himself to be unambiguously evil, exhausted from years of dealing with the extremely dark events that caused all of this, and questioning their own security protocols after the unprecedented break-in.

It cannot have been an easy beginning, yet Jack Cardale persevered.

Earliest Public Actions [ edit ]

Goddess/Advarsel Plot and Death (2005) [ edit ]

On September 25, 2005

During the Goddess/Advarsel plot in 2005, the undead dragon Advarsel, who was ravaging Subeta at the time, offered to spare his opponent Jack Cardale's life and even make him royalty if Jack only betrayed Subeta and swore fealty to Advarsel.

Jack Cardale heroically refused and his soul was sent to the realm of the dead and made to go through great pain.

He eventually turned up alive again in Subeta, though no one quite knows how since the plot just kinda stopped halfway through, lol.

You can read the plot through the news archives, and you can also read the whole plot (what there is of it) through Subetalodge under Other- Past Event Links- The Plot with the SAI.

Galactic Plot and Revamp (2007) [ edit ]

On March 15, 2007, the SAI issued a warning to all Subetans that the daylight hours were appearing to become shorter even though spring was approaching. They assured everyone that they were investigating the situation and promised a more formal announcement soon.

Users immediately recognized this as the beginning of a plot - and indeed it was.

Soon the sun on the Explore map went dark. It was always the nighttime map, even in the day. After several days of this darkness and confusion on the forums, two news posts appeared.

One featured a picture of Jack Cardale, and the message:

"Jack Cardale has opened the Subeta Agency of Investigation to all of Subeta, to help them find the cause of the sudden darkness!"

The other news post featured the Space Nomad Celesse's picture, and the message:

"Celesse and the Galactic Gypsy's have a different method of cleansing the evils of Subeta, and bringing back the Light. If you feel that this is a Magical issue, you are more than welcome to help them in the Coda Caves, however they don't take well to outsiders."

Yes, "Gypsy's" was the actual way it was spelled in the news post. They didn’t get the spelling right or change to the more politically correct “Space Nomads” until a few years later.

Anyway, when you clicked on either Jack Cardale or Celesse, they gave you a small description of why you should join their "team". The Gypsies' was:

"Outsiders...

The choice was yours to enter here, but be warned, we do not look kindly upon people of your type, the citizens of the main planet. If our cause was not so dire, we would turn away in disgust of the lifestyle you are so accustomed to. Our rivals in this venture to restore the sun back into the sky speak of science, while we have known all along that the power of the luminance lies in the fragments of the world. We shall follow the word of our deity, Apollina, Goddess of Light, and travel to the sacred Coda Caves. There we shall unearth the glowing shards hidden deep within the darkness, mere fragments of the power that once lay dormant throughout all of Subeta. We would never let the dirty outsiders, like yourself, within our sanctified grounds, but the situation has turned dire. Our humble tribe can not dig alone, the task is far too great. If you wish to aid us, we shall allow you to work alongside, procuring these shards to bring back the balance of magic to the world, as per the Oracle's instructions.Like most heathens, we assume you don't believe in our magics or that of Apollonia, so we believe you would want to help the Subeta Agency of Investigation, though we don't believe science will solve this matter."

Unfortunately, I didn't save Jack Cardale's speech at the time.

Actually, I didn't save Celesse's either, I got it from someone later.

But I do remember that in contrast to the gypsies who were rude and insulted you several times during the speech, Jack was polite, professional, urgent, and sounded like he sincerely welcomed your help and believed in Science over magic.

Like the Gypsies at the end, though, he also said that you might want to help them instead... just a way to urge you to check out the other team before signing up.

His plan revolved around harnessing the power which lay in certain Subeta objects to do with the sun, if I recall correctly. I DO know that the speech contained the words "Science is the Answer" because that's what every forum set based off the SAI said at the time.

Many users fell in love with Celesse's art and dress at the time, and scores of people joined the Gypsies for that alone.

Other users believed strongly in science and fact in real life, so joined the SAI. Jack Cardale was doing much better at remaining professional and competent throughout this crisis, whereas during the Advarsel plot he was freaking out much of the time, blaming himself for not warning Subeta earlier, and trying to take on all the danger alone.

When you joined a team, SAI members did quests much like daily quests, and Gypsy adherents dug for gems. Users can still dig for gems in exactly the same way today, but only on the sixth and seventh of each month now.

After you dug for the Gypsies, they rudely told you to go away because "we need time to clean this area now that you've been here"

Unfortunately, it all ended abruptly. Neither side "won" or got prizes, and staff described it as a mini-plot.

Keith later hinted that it wasn't over, but it ended up that he was talking about the Gypsies later blessing pets to be Galactic. The plot was how we got the color.

This was the ending news post:

"The SAI has announced that the darkness is over!

The reason for the sudden darkness over Subeta was the planet Phaloroceas. It came closer to Subeta than ever before, and possessed magical properties that counter-acted with that of Subeta's, and made it dark.

The Gypsies have requested that citizens of Subeta stop digging for gems in their mines, and the SAI has announced that it no longer needs any help."

There was a longer message in the SAI:

Thank You!

Thank you for helping us through this time, when an unknown and terrifying force surrounded Subeta. We have found through our extensive research that the planet Phaloroceas has been closer in orbit to Subeta than ever before. The Gypsies that you might have been helping were partially correct, the magical properties of the planet were effecting the inner magic of Subeta itself, causing it to be dark all day. Phaloroceas has moved far enough that it no longer effects Subeta or it's source of light. So have no fear, everything is back to normal.

It was Jack Cardale who understood and explained why the gems worked the way that they did. And he was a big enough person to admit that the Gypsies had taken the correct action, and thank everyone who helped!

The SAI message was changed fairly quickly to the bland "Thanks for your help!" and a picture of young Jack holding a sun potion. This image remained until the revamp of Jack in 2018.

User Account and Human Avatar (2011), and Forum Shop Position [ edit ]

On February 20, 2011, a user account was opened by Subeta staff for the non-player character, [NPC] Jack Cardale.

Eight (8) of the wearable items used to create Jack Cardale’s NPC human avatar were custom made for Jack. These were, at that time, searchable within the Wardrobe by using the search term "Cardale" and could be tried on by player HA's, but not worn on-site. Later these items were hidden from users' ability to search.

The items are: Jack Cardale Face, Jack Cardale Gloves, Jack Cardale Hair, Jack Cardale Pants, Jack Cardale Scanner, Jack Cardale Shirt, Jack Cardale Shoes, and Jack Cardale Tie.

Update: As of April 2026, with the move to the new wardrobe on the original site and not on Kumos, these items are searchable again.

At some point between February 2011 and December 2016, Cardale’s NPC Human Avatar became the shopkeeper of the Forum Shop. Users visit the Forum Shop to spend their Forum Tickets. The greeting given in the shop has no hint of the NPC personality that many of the other shopkeepers in other shops feature and consists only of the instructional words below:

“Welcome to the Forum shop! You can find Forum Tickets randomly when browsing the forums. You can turn in Raffle Tickets to receive Forum Tickets as well!”

Veta Camp 2016 (2016) [ edit ]

On August 6, 2018 Camp Veta 2016’s adventure contest was announced. The four categories were Drawing, Sculpture, Human Avatar, and Writing. Contestants could only enter one category and had until August 22nd at 11:59pm to submit their entries (this was an extended deadline in typical Subeta fashion). At the close of the contest, users voted for their favorites in each category. The three entries with the most votes in each category were recognized as winners and received a trophy, a special forum title (pitched a tent), and 500 cash shop credits.

On August 25th, the Winners of Camp Beta 2016 were announced, and in the Writing contest, user Keliora came in third with a story about Jack Cardale! The news announcement stated that:

“3rd: Keliora’s The tale of Jack Cardale's first mission with the SAI is quite the adventure.”

I am personally of the opinion that this makes the story into official lore. At least in a “story that is told in Subeta” type of way.

Unfortunately, the story has been lost to time. Entries were not viewable after voting ended. NPC Wesley said in the news announcement that there would later be a gallery hosting all the entries, and Amber said the same thing in a news comment, but this gallery never materialized. I reached out to the author but unfortunately they stated that they did not have a copy and could not remember much about the story other than that it was, indeed, the story of Jack Cardale’s first adventure with the SAI and that it was extremely short.

If any of you readers would like to file a ticket asking for that gallery after all this time, feel free, lol. Or if ANYONE out there saved it, please please send it to me.

Warping Wizard Adventure (2019) [ edit ]

On September 17, 2019 the Subeta website turned 15 years old. As part of the anniversary celebrations, users were treated to a mini-plot modeled after the popular Choose Your Own Adventure book series. Jack Cardale at SAI HQ was one available location. His short visit with the Wizard is reprinted here in its entirety:

"Oh why yes, I did want to visit the SAI office. Wouldn’t want to cause any trouble with my wanderings," the wizard says earnestly.

You try to explain one last time that you don’t think SAI will care about his time traveling, but don’t argue the point too much; Jack Cardale is looking particularly fine these days.

When you get to the SAI headquarters you see that you’re not the only one to notice the changes. The wizard’s eyes widen when you introduce him to Agent Cardale. "But no, you can’t be Jack!" he exclaims. "You’re so, so tall and serious and your hair isn’t even fluffy!"

Jack Cardale stares at the wizard for a long moment then turns to you, clearly choosing to ignore the wizard’s outburst. You quickly explain why you’re there, and the wizard’s concerns about time traveling without notifying the proper authorities.

Jack just shakes his head and tells you that time travel isn’t his department and if anything you should have checked in with Inspector Thorpe. "Inspector who?" asks the wizard. You gently shush him and thank Jack for his time, then firmly lead the wizard back out of SAI headquarters, still muttering about how impossible it is for people to have changed this much. He’s clearly too distracted to choose your next destination, so you decide on your next destination.

> The Arctic Frost isn’t too far away; travel there.

> Maybe it’d be best to take the wizard someplace new; take the wizard to Shengui Guo.
