Thrud was born to Thor and Sif, though you'd never guess she was Sif's daughter as she got her looks and her personality from her father. Ever since she was a little girl, she loved to wrestle and play-fight with her older half-brothers, Magni and Modi. She wasn't quite as strong as them, but still strong enough to keep up with them for the most part(and they didn't go easy on her).

Just as she shared that interest with her brothers, she also shared the interest of women as well. That's why when Alviss told Thor that Thrud had agreed to marry him, Thor knew something was amiss. Though not considered particularly wise, when it came to his little girl he was. He challenged the Dwarf to a battle of wits that lasted the entire night and when the sun rose the Dwarf turned to stone, thus breaking the spell he placed on Thrud which made her agree to marry him.

In their culture, most unmarried free-women served as handmaidens to Frigg. But that was most definitely not something Thrud was interested in. So instead she went to Freyja and asked her if she could serve as a Valkyrie, that way she could still do what she loved to do - fight. Freyja agreed, and so Thrud became a Valkyrie, and quickly proved herself and rose through the ranks until she became one of the leaders of a host of nine Valkyries.
