Sif had always been known for her beauty… particularly her soft, long, luscious honey wheat colored locks.

She was born to a Jotunn farmer and his wife, their only child. They were surprised when a Jarl expressed interest in marrying Sif with no bride price. Certainly, she was a beautiful young woman, but Jarls tended to marry for political or financial reasons, none of which Sif had. However, they felt it was in her best interest to marry into a wealthy family who had political ties, and so they agreed.

The marriage, however, did not turn out to be a happy one, as the Jarl, Beinviðr, was abusive. The only time he did not hit her was when she was pregnant with their child. But as soon as she gave birth to Ullr, the Jarl returned to his ways.

It was Thor, the mighty Aesir, who did not take kindly to this. While visiting the Jarl’s home he witnessed first hand the Jarl strike his wife and immediately took up his great, two-handed hammer. Thunder and lightning crashed all around as Sif hid under the table while all of her husband’s sworn men swarmed the Aesir. But soon enough it quieted. Sif slowly poked her head out to see only the Aesir standing.

Thor held out a hand to her, telling her not to be afraid. He told her that no man should ever treat a beautiful woman such as herself the way the Beinviðr treated her. Then he asked her to come with him to Asgard as his wife.

“Not without my son”, Sif replied. Thor agreed, saying he had two young sons of his own who were in need of a mother. And so Sif married her rescuer.

Sif was quickly accepted among the Aesir, and was a good mother to Thor’s sons, who were just a bit older than Ullr. The boys got along fantastically, though Sif could tell Ullr felt inadequate compared to the strength of Thor’s sons, Magni and Modi. And then soon enough Sif got with child, and bore Thor a daughter who they named Thrud.

Everyone loved Sif, which was why it was such a shock when she woke up to find all her beautiful hair chopped completely off. She had just washed it in the river and was laying out on a patch of moss letting it dry in the sun when she fell asleep. When she awoke, all her hair was gone! Crying over the loss of her hair, which she knew Thor loved, she covered her head and went home.

Upon finding out what had happened, Thor immediately knew the trickster Loki was behind it. He demanded Loki correct it or he threatened to do much harm to him. And so Loki turned to the dwarves, who were master craftsmen.

They created for Sif a wig of golden hair that in every way felt and acted as if it were real hair. It even grew like real hair! As if her natural hair hadn’t been beautiful enough, this wig was quite possibly even more beautiful. Sif accepted the wig, and almost as if to sweeten Thor’s disposition to Loki, he was given the hammer Mjolnir. It was flawed, for it could not be wielded with two hands as Thor was used to, but it had magical powers and would always return to Thor if he threw it. A fine gift!

All thanks to Sif’s hair, Thor got Mjolnir.
