Loki was always prone to mischief.

He was born to Fárbauti and Laufey, but rather than take his father’s name as his surname, he chose Laufeysson instead. He had to be different, and different he was. He didn’t fit in with the Jotunn, and so he went elsewhere.

It just so happened that he met Odin on his quest to find somewhere to belong. He was charming and adventurous, and encouraged Odin on his escapades. This endeared Odin to him, despite the fact that the Aesir felt Jotunn were evil enemies of their kind. Odin invited Loki to stay in Asgard, to which the other Aesir did not take well. But Odin declared Loki like a brother, stating that he would not accept the mead horn unless Loki was also served, thus cementing Loki’s place amongst the Aesir.

Loki’s mischief got him into much trouble there, but his wit always seemed to get him out of it.

Just after the Aesir-Vanir war, in which the Vanir brought down Asgard’s defensive walls, the Aesir were looking to rebuild their defenses. A man came to them claiming he could build walls so high and so strong that not even a Jotunn could get through them, but that his price was Freyja as a wife, and the sun and the moon. The Aesir did not like this and wanted to turn him away. However, Loki convinced the Aesir he would never be able to build a wall like that within three months, and so the Aesir gave him the ultimatum that he must complete a wall in three months time with no help except for that of his horse, Svaðilfari.

Unfortunately, the man was a Jotunn himself, and his horse was supernatural... days before the deadline it seemed as if he was going to complete his task. The Aesir were in a tisy. They blamed Loki for this, and Thor said he needed to correct it or else they would kill him. Loki turned himself into a mare and seduced Svaðilfari away from his work. In the process, the mare Loki got impregnated by the stallion, and so for a year he remained away from Asgard so that none would see. It was during this time he met Angrboda.

When he returned to Asgard, he brought with him an eight legged foal, named Sleipnir, who he gifted to Odin as a way to make up for almost getting his wife, the sun and the moon taken away from them. It was a gift Odin was all to happy to accept, proclaiming Sleipnir the best of all horses.

Loki continued to go to the Ironwood to see Angrboda, the feisty and independent Jotunn who Loki met while pregnant. Over the years she bore him three children. The first of which was Fenrir, a wolf pup who seemed to never stop growing. The second was Jormungandr, a serpent who like-wise never seemed to stop growing. And the third was a little girl, who was half-dead at birth and yet still alive. Loki hid this information from the Aesir, knowing they would never understand.

To keep up appearances and further cement his place in their society, he dated around. He begot a son on Zisa, but married a beautiful woman named Sigyn. She was nothing like Angrboda… she was sweet, and kind, and caring, and loyal. Loki did love her… in his own way… though he could not be what a husband was supposed to be to a wife. Still, she was everything a wife was supposed to be to a husband.

It was soon after that he saw Freyja sneak into the hovel of some dwarves. He turned into a fly and watched as she spent four nights with the four dwarves and emerge from the hovel with a beautiful and magical necklace. While she slept in her bower, the fly Loki went in and stole the necklace. He brought it to Odin and told him of it all, hoping to win Odin’s favor.

While out traveling with Odin and Thor, food was scarce. So they butchered an ox and began to cook it. But no matter how long they left it over the fire, it would not cook. That’s when a voice came from overhead. A large eagle perched in the tree stated it was his magic that would not allow them to cook their meat. The eagle said if they gave him some of the meat, he would allow them to cook the rest. The gods, though irritated, agreed, and the eagle flew down and took for himself the choicest portions of the ox.

Loki thought this to be beyond the terms of their bargain, and, in anger, took up a sturdy branch and lunged at the eagle. The eagle snatched the branch in his talons, and, with a bewildered Loki still clinging to the other end, flew up high into the sky. The terrified god begged the eagle to release him, but the eagle, who was none other than than the Jotunn, Thjazi, refused to do so until Loki swore an oath to bring him Idunn and her fruits.

The trio returned to Asgard, and Loki immediately began hatching his plan to lure Idunn away so that Thjazi could take her. He claimed to her that he had seen apples much larger and more plump and juicy than the immortal apples she carried. He lured her away, and Thjazi snatched her up and carried her away to his great hall. The gods began to age, their skin became wrinkled, their hair greyed, and their vigor waned. They somehow knew Loki was to blame for this, it always seemed to be Loki. Thor once again threatened him with all manner of pains if he did not find a way to bring Idunn back.

So, Loki borrowed Freyja’s falcon cloak, turned into a falcon, and flew to Thjazi’s hall, where he found Idunn alone in a room. He picked her up and flew her back to Asgard, followed closely by Thjazi in eagle form. The Aesir built a great barrier that once Loki passed they lit it on fire and burned Thjazi to death. And so, Idunn was returned to the Aesir.

However, it wasn’t long after that Thjazi’s daughter, Skadi came storming into Asgard demanding retribution for her father’s death. Talking his way out of certain death, he convinced her to take payment in the form of marriage, and promised to make her laugh, which unfortunately not much broke through her icy countenance. She finally laughed when he tied a rope around his junk and the other end around a goat that tugged at him.

Things got rather dull after that, and so one day Loki happened upon Sif laying in a bank of moss near a river, sleeping while the sun dried her hair. He cut it ALL off. Thor immediately went into a rage and once again made dire threats against Loki’s life. Albeit they weren’t the most witty or original of threats, they still shook Loki. So Loki promised to fix it.

Loki knew he had gone too far this time, and he needed to go above and beyond to fix it. So he went to the dwarves, the finest craftsmen in all the realms. First he went to the sons of Ivaldi and said there was a competition between them and their rivals, Brokkir and Sindri, as to who were the best craftsman. They were to create three items for the Aesir, one of which needed to be a wig of beautiful golden hair. Then he went to Brokkir and Sindri to challenge them to make three items and that the Aesir would judge who was the best craftsman.

Brokkir and Sindri did not seem interested, and so Loki then bet his head that they could were not better craftsmen than the sons of Ivaldi. They took the bet. As a fly, Loki attempted to mess Brokkir and Sindri up, but when it came time and the Aesir judged all the magical items gifted to them, they judged Brokkir and Sindri to be the better craftsmen.

Panicked, thinking on his feet, Loki said he promised his head, not his neck. And so the dwarves could not chop his head off as they wished. Instead they decided to sew his mouth shut.

Not long after that, Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir was stolen. Immediately Loki was blamed, though he had no part in it. Still, it was up to him to figure out what happened and make everything better. He learned that the Jotunn, Thrym, stole Thor’s hammer, and that Thrym demanded Freyja as a wife, which he relayed to all the Gods. No longer married to Odin, the Aesir begged Freyja to accept, and she flew into a rage. So Heimdall suggested that Thor dress up as Freyja.

Naturally Thor vehemently refused this idea, but Loki quite liked it. He convinced Thor it was the only way to get his hammer back. Thor huffed, but finally agreed, so long as Loki also go as his handmaiden. Loki agreed. They went to the wedding, where Loki had to cover for Thor's idiocy... but in the end they retrieved Thor’s hammer and Thor killed many giants.

It was just after this that the Aesir learned of his children by Angrboda. They captured all three of them and brought them to Asgard. Odin threw Jormungandr into the oceans around Midgard, gave Fenrir to Tyr to look after, and then brought Hel to the underground domain to rule over.

Loki was already bitter about being blamed for Thor’s hammer, but now he was even more bitter at their treatment of his children. Having seen, during the time Hel was in Asgard, that his daughter had keen eyes for Baldr(the only of the Aesir to treat her kindly despite her decaying countenance), Loki began to plot on how to get Baldr to his daughter.

Somehow Frigg seemed to know this and went to every living thing to make them swear and oath to never harm her son. But Loki knew she had missed the mistletoe. So he crafted an arrow of mistletoe and waited for the opportune moment.

That moment came when everyone was throwing things as Baldr to see that he truly was immortal. Nothing could harm him… no rock, no axe, no spear, no sword. Hodr, who Loki and many others had just witnessed bickering with Baldr days prior, sat alone. Loki gave him the arrow and pointed him in the direction of Baldr. When Hodr let the arrow fly, Baldr died.

Of course, Loki could not keep his mouth shut about it, and one day while flytings were being tossed about he admitted to his hand in Baldr’s death, which also resulted in the deaths of Nanna and Hodr. He knew the Aesir would come for him and thought of every way they would try to catch him. He figured if he was a fish he could escape them, but then remembered Ran’s net. He crafted one to see if he could escape it, but heard the Aesir coming for him.

Quickly he tried to burn the evidence, and jumped into the river as a salmon. But wise Heimdall saw the remnants of the net and the Aesir crafted a net and caught Loki. He was brought before Odin, who set his punishment. He was to be tied, using the entrails of his son with Sigyn, to a boulder. Skadi set a poisonous snake above him that would forever drip it’s venom onto him.

The pain was unbearable and Loki writhed with agony at every drop. Sigyn, his dutiful and loyal wife would hold a bowl above him to catch the poison, but every now and again would need to dump the bowl. The poison would touch Loki’s skin and he would thrash in pain, causing earthquakes until the bowl returned to protect him.

Loki doesn’t quite know how he’ll get out of this. But he knows he will, and the Aesir will pay for what they have done.
