Heimdall isn’t entirely sure who his mother really is. He was raised by the nine daughters of Ran, all sea maidens and all aspects of the waves. At least, he was raised by them until he came of age. Then he went to go live with his father, Odin, in Asgard.

In those times Asgard was still new. Odin and his brothers had created it to be their home, and then created Midgard out of the remains of the great primordial giant Ymir. Odin had other sons who also joined them in Asgard: Tyr(a foster-son), Thor(by the Jotunn Jord), and Vidar(by the Jotan Girdr). Together with Odin and his brothers they helped build Asgard’s great capital city up.

Heimdall took after his father, with a curious nature. Seeing Odin travel the Bifrost bridge, he decided he too would go to Midgard to see what it was like. It was nothing like Asgard, but it was still beautiful and wondrous and intriguing all the same. He travelled Midgard under the name of Rig, claiming to be a sorcerer.

The first couple he visited in Midgard were Ai and his wife Edda. They lived in a small little hovel, and were not beautiful themselves. However, they were hospitable and gave what little they could to their visitor. Heimdall learned that the couple had been trying to conceive for quite some time, but with no luck. And so, Heimdall said he could help them. With their agreement, he spent the night in their bed, and lay between them. The next morning he left, and nine months later Edda gave birth to a little boy. They called him Thrall. A woman called Thir married Thrall and they lived a life of hard labor. They had 21 children of their own, 12 boys and 9 girls. They became the race of serfs in Midgard.

On another visit to Midgard, as Rig, Heimdall met another couple, Afi and Amma, who could not conceive. They were nicely dressed and kept a well-kept hall. Heimdall told them he could help them if they let him spend the night with them, and so they invited him into their bed. Once again, Heimdall slept between the man and woman, and in the morning left. Nine months later they had a son, whom they called Karl. Karl raised oxen and plowed fields, and he met a woman named Snör who sewed goatskin gowns. They married and had 22 children: 12 boys and 10 girls. These children became the ancestors of free farmers, craftsmen and herdsmen.

Finally, on a third visit to Midgard, as Rig, Heimdall came upon a great hall owned by Faðir and his wife Móðir. They were childless, though they attempted to bear children. Heimdallr told them he knew magics and could help them concieve, and so they invited him in,fed him good food, and shared a bed with him. Once again he lay between the man and woman, and the woman got with child. Móðir gave birth to a beautiful little boy who they named Jarl. He was healthy and fierce. He learned to use weapons and hunted skillfully. Rig returned and claimed Jarl as his heir. Rig taught Jarl runes and urged him to become a ruler.

Through warfare Jarl became lord of eighteen homesteads with much wealth besides. He married a woman named Erna, who bore twelve sons and no daughters. All the sons were given high-sounding names, and became the ancestors of the warrior and nobility classes.

When Odin learned of Ragnarok, he asked a great oath of Heimdall… that he should watch over the Bifrost Bridge for any invaders. Heimdall knew this was not an oath to be taken lightly, that his entire life duty would be put to this one mission. There would be no more gallivanting in Midgard. Heimdall swore the oath to his father, and then was taken to the well of Mimir.

“I sacrificed my eye to gain knowledge, what will you sacrifice to this duty?” Odin said, putting even more emphasis on the importance of this duty. Heimdall took out his knife and cut his own ear off and threw it into the well. From then on he could hear for miles and miles and miles. He could hear the grass as it grows on the earth, wool as it grows on sheep, and anything louder.

A great hall was built on a high mountain where the Bifrost Bridge met Asgard, and it was called Himinbjörg. This became Heimdall’s home. From here he watches over the bridge with his Gjallarhorn by his side ready to blow it should he see any Jotunn cross the bridge. Heimdall needs no sleep, only to keep watch. Always.

It is a sacred duty he take very seriously.
