Frigg was born to Fjörgynn and Jord. She was their only child, however she had many half siblings by each. Jord never raised any of her own children, as she was far too wild in spirit, and so as soon as the babe was born she passed them off to their father. Only, Fjörgynn was just as roaming and wild, and so Jorn could not find him as she had found the fathers of her previous children. So, instead she dropped the babe off with the Norns.

Although we only hear of Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, there were actually many Norns. One of which had just lost her own babe, and so she became the wetnurse of Frigg. Ever since a young age, Frigg learned the art of spinning and weaving by watching the other Norns. In her younger years however, she, herself, did not weave. Instead she took care of the other numerous chores that needed to be handled for the Norns.

She cooked great large meals to feed them all, and cleaned the bowers which the Norns called home. She tended the great gardens that provided them with food, and foraged for berries and herbs. She learned how to milk the cows and goats, and how to make cheese and butter. She learned how to dye wool, and how to sew and embroider the robes and dresses the Norns wore.

It was before she had her first monthly blood that she remembered seeing a man hang himself by his feet from the great tree Yggdrasil over Urðarbrunnr, pierced by his own spear. For days and nights he hung there, taking no food or water, delirious in his mad ramblings. She thought for certain he was going to die. The other Norns just left him there, but whispered about him while they carried on with their tasks of spinning and weaving. Frigg kept hearing the name Odin.

Then, one day, when she was going out to gather water from the well so that she might water the roots of Yggdrasil, she noticed the man, Odin, was suddenly just… gone.

Frigg wondered what happened to him, but dare not ask. She carried on diligently and dutifully with her work.

Once she reached her majority, Frigg began to learn the art of spinning. She spun great distaffs of wool into the thread that the Norns used to weave the fine tapestry that made up the past, present, and future. For many, many years this was all she learned, until the Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld were satisfied she had perfected it. For you see, there is far more to it than simply spinning… there is a magic to it known as spá-craft. Until spákona could determine ørlög(or the law of how things will be) through spinning, one could not begin weaving wyrd(or the fate of all).

It was when she began learning how to weave the tapestry of Wyrd that the man came back. Only he was different now. She was much older, and so was he. But Odin was not an old man yet… he was still in his prime, rugged, handsome, and fearsome with his armor and mighty spear. But also, he had lost an eye. Now only one bright blue eye burned with will and determination, but it seemed as though he could see more with the one than he had with the two.

That one eye set upon Frigg as she gently wove the threads of fate. He asked her name, and she told him. Then he asked something that she never imagined… he asked if she would marry him. Words escaped her. This was the only life she knew.

Finally Skuld spoke up, beckoning Frigg to come over to her. “This is your thread, Frigg,” Skuld said, gently placing it in Frigg’s hands. She had never been allowed to touch her thread before, and now that one of the primary Norns had given her permission, Frigg closed her eyes and gently extended her consciousness out along the delicate thread. She saw herself seated beside Odin in a great hall in Asgard. She saw herself pregnant. She saw herself with the child, and pregnant again. She saw her boys grown, and all the love her little family entailed. She reached out further and saw…

The thread was taken from her hand. “That is quite enough,” Verdandi stated. “You have your answer.”

Frigg nodded, tears pricked in her eyes. Leaving everything she had ever known was difficult… but what she saw was everything she realized she desired. A family.

“I will marry you, Odin,” she finally told him. “And I will give you sons.”

True to her word, Frigg first had Baldr who was the light of their lives. He was a good and easy baby, who slept the entire night through right since birth, and hardly cried. And he was the most beautiful baby, but perhaps that was bias on Odin and Frigg’s part. Then they had Hodr, who was born on the darkest and coldest night of winter. The poor babe was born in the dark, and could see nothing but darkness, as he was blind. He was the opposite of Baldr, and cried all the time. But Frigg could not fault him for it, for he could not know what was going on around him.

Odin went away often, in his search for wisdom and knowledge, leaving Frigg to take care of the entire kingdom and their family on her own. His brother Ve was of great help, often sitting in the high seat in Odin’s place while he was gone. Frigg knew he desired her, just as he had desired Odin’s former wife, Freyja.

Of course, Frigg was often lonely, and cried in her husband’s absence, missing him greatly. But it was not Ve that she turned to for comfort. It was her most trusted handmaiden, Fulla. What started as a servant/superior relationship sprouted quickly into close confidants, then bloomed into the dearest of friendship, and eventually flowered into love.

Frigg did not know who kissed who first, she could not know as it was something that just happened as they hugged, and it was something they both clearly desired for quite some time. The kiss held years of love and desire. And from that point on, whenever Odin was away, Fulla would share Frigg’s bed.

Frigg was almost certain Odin knew… Odin knew everything. But he did not say anything about it. And so, this was their silent arrangement. Odin could go on his travels as often and as long as he wanted, with the support and encouragement of his loving wife, and she could take comfort in Fulla alone while he was away.

Their family grew, as Baldr married sweet Nanna. Frigg knew Hodr had loved Nanna, but Nanna did not know, and besides Nanna loved Baldr. Everyone loved Baldr. Frigg hoped this would not come between the brothers. And it seemed as if it didn’t. Hodr swallowed his pain and supported Baldr in his marriage to Nanna, and even rejoiced when they had their first child, Forseti.

But soon, Baldr came to Frigg with troubling dreams. He admitted he had dreams of his own death, and asked her what they could mean. Frigg knew these dreams to be prophetic in nature, but kept this knowledge from her son. Instead she turned to Fulla, as Odin was gone. The women thought and pondered over it for weeks, finally coming up with a plan. That was when Odin returned.

Frigg told her husband of the prophetic dreams, which understandably troubled him as much as it did her. However, Odin did as he always did, and went away again.

Frigg took it upon herself to travel the nine realms, taking oaths from everything… every person, every animal, every rock and tree and plant… only she missed one. The tiny mistletoe high up in a crag could be of no threat to her son, she thought. And so she left it be.

She told Odin of what she had done, and he rejoiced, claiming Baldr to be truly immortal. The other gods rejoiced as well, and Baldr challenged them to strike him with a sword. Frigg winced as the sword struck Baldr… but the blade did nothing to his flesh. The boys all laughed and cheered, and made a great game of it, throwing axes and spears and rocks and all manner of things at Baldr.

Then, suddenly, Baldr dropped to the ground dead. Frigg and Odin leapt up from their high seats and rushed to Baldr, only to notice an arrow made of mistletoe had struck his heart. Looking back, they saw only Hodr standing there with a bow in hand, smiling and laughing until he realized the severity of the situation. “Baldr?” he called out. Frigg wailed and Hodr fled.

“Lie with me, Frigg”, Odin said that night as she sobbed.

“What?!” she wailed. “Are you mad?!”

“A Volva told me that I would have a child. That child would grow to adult in one day and avenge Baldr’s death”, Odin explained. “Do you not want his killer to be punished?”

But Frigg was far too grief stricken to think of such things. Hodr was also their son after all. She hit Odin several times, and chased him out of their room, then found comfort in Fulla’s soft, warm embrace and cried herself to sleep in Fulla’s arms while her handmaiden gently stroked her hair.

Odin left, and begot a child on another woman. Just as Odin had said, that child grew to age in just one night and began the hunt for Hodr. It didn’t take him long before he brought Hodr’s corpse back to Odin’s hall, but Frigg had cried all her tears out and she could spare none for her other son.

It wasn’t until they were invited to a great feast in Aegir’s hall, when Loki was drunk and throwing insults around to every Aesir in the room that she cried for Hodr. For Loki slipped up and admitted that he knew she hadn’t asked the mistletoe’s oath and so fashioned the arrow that pierced Baldr’s heart. It was he that had given the arrow to blind Hodr and pointed him in the direction to take aim before slipping out into the shadows himself.

Frigg’s wound re-opened and her sorrow for both her sons came pouring out.

Finally, numb from grief, Frigg returned to the Norns. She told them of what transpired, and asked to see her thread again. The Norns agreed… and there Frigg saw that Loki would face his punishment for what he had done to her family. The corner of her mouth tugged up ever so slightly, but quickly it fell… for she then saw her second great sorrow. She saw the death of Odin. Tears pricked her eyes as she sought for any way to change that fate… but no matter how she thought she could weave the threads, Odin was fated to die.

Her only solace is that she would follow shortly after.
