Hermodr was born to a mortal man and woman. He grew up in Midgard, and was a brave and honorable warrior who went on many raids. One such raid claimed his life, and the Valkyries took him up to Asgard. He was among the first group of warriors to go to Valhalla.

He became a servant to Odin, serving him dutifully and faithfully. And he soon discovered he had feelings for the Aesir. But he kept them to himself. It wasn’t until Odin started his path down Seidr that his desires had their place. Despite the fact that Odin was a married man, and held interest primarily in women, he trusted and allowed only Hermodr into his bed.

Hermodr was then granted the status of Aesir, rather than simply Einherjar(Odin’s slain warriors).

Freyja had no qualms with Hermodr sharing a bed with Odin, in fact it was she who suggested him to Odin… for to practice Seidr one must open themselves up to a receptive role so they might receive the prophetic visions. However, their marriage did not last long. Frigg, Odin’s second wife, however did not understand his and Odin’s relationship, nor did she condone in. But she held her tongue in bitter silence, and Odin hid his relationship out of respect.

It wasn’t until the death of Baldr that Frigg began to open up to Hermodr and trust him and put faith in him. For only he stepped up to take the dangerous journey to Hel’s domain to try to persuade the Dread Queen to let Baldr return.

Odin gave him Sleipnir, and he rode nine days and nine nights to the dark valley. He past many river, until finally he got to the largest one, which a bridge crossed. It was guarded by a Jotunn named Modgudr. She stopped him, and asked him how he was still alive. He told her he was on a quest by Odin to save Baldr. This pleased her, as she loved Baldr(everyone did).She let him pass and told him to get to Hel’s Hall he must go northwards and downwards.

Time lost all meaning, but eventually he reached the great black gates of Hel’s domain. Without a second thought he passed through them and strode up to Hel’s highseat. He knelt down in respect and pleaded his case. To which the Queen of the Undead remained unreadable for many long moments, drumming her long nails on the arm of her highseat.

Finally she told Hermodr if Frigg could get every thing in all the nine realms to weep for Baldr’s death, then she would release him. Hermodr felt his heart leap with joy, for everyone loved Baldr. Surely everyone would cry to hear of his death and then he will have helped bring Odin and Frigg their beloved son back. He would be a hero!

Unfortunately, not everything cried upon hearing Baldr’s death. There was a giantess(who was unknowingly Loki in disguise) who refused to shed a tear. And so Baldr remained in Hel’s domain.
