Gerdr was born to Gymir and Aurboða, who held some of the richest farmlands in Jotunheim, surrounded by a ring of fire. They farmed the fields, and raised cattle on their vast lands, and lived a rather rich life.

Then one day while her parents were out, an Alf named Skirnir came to visit her. He spoke of the Vanir-Aesir Freyr, whom she knew nothing about. He told her that if she would proclaim her love for him, they would give her 11 golden apples of ever-lasting life. Gerdr refused, as she did not know Freyr. Then Skirnir said they would shower her and her family in wealth and riches if only she proclaimed her love for Freyr. Gerdr only cocked her head to the side and proclaimed they had enough gold to suit them.

Skirnir then turned to threats, saying he would cut her head off with his sword that never missed if she refused to marry Freyr. Gerdr only laughed at this and said her father would destroy him if that happened.

At his wits end, Skirnir then said that he will tame Gerd with his Taming Wand, such that she will never see men again; sit high up in the mountain alone; stare for all time at the gates of Hel; and turn so ugly no man would ever want her. He then began to carve runes proclaiming all kinds of disgrace, degradation, unfulfilled lust, and other bad things that will happen if she diidn’t marry Freyr. Luckily, though, he hadn’t yet finished carving his charm before she agreed, so none of it would ever actually happen.

Gerdr agreed, finally to marry Freyr in 9 days time in Barri.

True to her word, she met Freyr in Barri and married him. It turned out that he was handsome and a good husband, everything Gerdr could have hoped for in a partner.
