Poor Sigyn.

That’s what everyone always said.

Poor Sigyn for having to put up with Loki for a husband. But Loki was charming and witty and funny. He always made her laugh, and it was never a dull moment with him. They had a fun and playful marriage, unlike many of the other gods who were so serious all the time. Sigyn couldn’t imagine a life without laughter. And Loki made both her and their children laugh frequently. She couldn’t imagine a life without a partner who played with their children as though he were a child himself.

Poor Sigyn for having to deal with Loki’s affairs. She knew he had them, but felt it was the pot calling the kettle black when the others judged Loki for the same things they did. Freyja had her numerous affairs on Odin. Freyr had his on Gerdr. Odin had his on both Freyja and Frigg. Hel, even Frigg was even rumored to have had affairs on Odin. And Sigyn overheard Hodr yelling at Baldr of Baldr’s affair on pregnant Nanna. Let he who has not done so already cast the first stone, and none other than Sigyn would be able to throw a stone at Loki. Not that she would.

Poor Sigyn though, for having to watch as one of her sons was turned into a wolf and sicked upon her other son. Poor Sigyn for having to witness her husband bound to a rock with her own child’s intestines. And indeed, poor Sigyn. The horror and pain she endured because of this, because of her husband’s hand in Baldr’s death. Yet still, Sigyn held herself together. Many people lost their children… to famine, to illness, to war… Frigg had just lost both of her children as well. By now Sigyn was sick of the pity and wanted nothing of it, she just wanted to be able to grieve in peace without people talking about her behind her back.

But poor Sigyn, having to hold a bowl above her traitorous husband’s head to prevent serpent venom from dripping on him. Did they not realize she WANTED to do this? She wanted to bring Loki some relief. After all, he had made her laugh and brought such joy into her life through their children. What wife among the Aesir would do the same for their husbands?

Poor Sigyn for having loyalty? Integrity? Honor?

Hold your pity. Sigyn has no need of it.
