Tyr was born to the Jotunn, Hymir and Hróðr. Tyr lived with them until he was of fostering age, and then as was custom his parents sought out the best place to foster him. It so happened that Odin had just created a great hall in the realm of Asgard. Having heard of his creation of Midgard, Hymir and Hróðr agreed it would be in their own be interest to send him to Odin as a foster son, that way Odin would not kill them as he and his kin were wont to do to Jotunn-kind.
Odin accepted Tyr as a foster son, needing more folk to protect Asgard. And so Tyr went to live and train with Odin. At this time, Odin had two other sons: Heimdall who was somehow born of the nine sea maidens(also Jotunn), and Thor who was born from Jord(also a Jotunn). Tyr got along well with them, and spent many hours working beside them and training with them. Soon Vidar joined them(at this time he spoke, but somewhere along the way he took a vow of silence).
Tyr and Thor were almost equally matched in strength and skill. That was, until he received Megingjörð, a belt that doubled his strength from Gridr(Vidar’s mother). Then none could even compete with Thor, not Heimdall, not Vidar who was almost as strong as both Tyr and Thor, not even Tyr.
One day when all the Aesir went to Aegir’s great hall in the sea, they discovered Aegir needed a bigger kettle to brew ale to host them all. He had many kettles, and could brew lots of ale, but it took so much time and it would just be easier for him to brew all the ale in one large vat rather than a multitude. So, Tyr spoke up. He told them that his father had a kettle large enough for such a host. It was a tremendous cauldron that could brew fathomes of ale.
Thor, naturally, being the heavy drinker he was, liked the sound of this and suggested that he and Tyr go visit his parents.
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but he certainly wasn’t expecting the homecoming he received. It was as if his parents didn’t want anything to do with him. But they begrudgingly hosted their son and Thor for the evening. They butchered three oxen, which Thor alone ate two of. Then Hymir stated they would need to go hunting if they were to host them for another night.
Thor agreed to go fishing with Hymir, but Tyr stayed back with his mother. He learned that Hymir no longer loved her and often went to lay with other women. That he had begot a daughter on one of them, Saga. She said the girl was neglected, as Hymir and his mistress cared not for her but only for each other. Tyr exclaimed that she should raise the girl then, and his mother only snorted,”That bastard child of mine own husband’s affair?! I didn’t even want to raise you!”
Tyr finally extracted the information about where Saga was being kept. That was when Thor and Hymir returned, and Hymir begrudgingly gave them the great kettle, for Thor had outfished him. Tyr and Thor brought the kettle back to Aegir’s hall, but Tyr could not stop thinking about his half-sister and the woes she must endure.
Finally he took it upon himself to travel to where his mother said his father’s mistress lived. Sure enough, there was a young girl, beautiful and blonde, in filthy rags with only the company of a book. He watched as her mother used her like a slave to do all the cooking and cleaning and other thrall duties, meanwhile she primped herself in the finest of clothes and flushed her cheeks, then kicked the girl out as soon as Hymir entered.
Tyr watched the girl blindly make her way down to the riverbed, her bright blue eyes glued to the book in her hands. He waited a moment, then approached and introduced himself to her, telling her that they shared a father, but that he lived in a realm called Asgard. The girl was so excited to have a brother and someone to talk to, she must have asked him million questions about Asgard. He then suggested she come with him to live there.
Saga looked back to her home, almost scared to leave.
“They will not miss you”, Tyr bluntly stated. She gnawed at her lower lip in thought then nodded her head and joined Tyr. The entire way back to Asgard she filled his ear with stories she had either heard or read.
Tyr introduced his half-sister to Odin, who saw the book in her hand and immediately took a liking to her. Odin granted her a small hall filled with books at Sökkvabekkr, a bank near the river, and said he would only give it to her if she agreed to be the Aesir’s historian and write of their stories and exploits. Saga’s pretty face lit up instantly and she agreed. Tyr visited Saga often, though found he didn’t really have much in common with her, as he was not much of a reader. Odin, Tyr noticed, visited Saga daily. He would drink from the source of the river out of golden goblets with her and listen to her stories and tell stories of his own. Sometimes Tyr wondered if there was something more going on between the two, but figured it best not to look into it.
One day, Odin called Tyr, Thor, and Vidar to him. He told them of troubling news from Hugin and Munin… that Loki had fathered monsters who lived in the Ironwood. He wanted them to go bring those children of Loki to him so that he might see for himself. So the three trekked to Jotunheim to the Ironwood and found Angrboda’s hovel. There was a wolf pup, a serpent, and a little girl who looked to be half dead already. With a whack of Mjolnir on Angrboda’s head the three Aesir bound and captured the children of Loki and brought them back to Odin.
The serpent was huge, and Odin thought it best for Vidar to take it and throw it into the ocean. So Vidar took the serpent to Midgard and heaved it into the ocean. The wolf looked to be a normal wolf, albeit could speak through his mind. Odin was leery and did not want to set the wolf free, however, so he put the wolf, Fenrir in Tyr’s care. And finally the little girl was small and weak. He let her roam Asgard freely for a time, but finally decided to take her to the underworld, where he gave her the whole realm to have as her own. It was, in Tyr’s mind a fate worse than death.
Tyr cared for the wolf pup and realized it grew in leaps and bounds. One day it was eating an entire deer by itself, and the next it was eating more than Thor could in one sitting. Soon the wolf grew to gigantic proportions, and the Aesir began to get concerned. They tied a rope about him to keep him contained, but he broke through it with such ease. So they forged a strong metal chain, and once again Fenrir busted it.
They began to make a game of it with Fenrir… they would try to make the strongest bonds they could and they bet he could not break them. But he broke through everything.
Finally the Aesir went to the master craftsmen, the dwarves, and asked them to forge the strongest bindings they could. They sent Skirnir to acquire the components: the sound of a cat's footfall, the beard of women, the roots of mountains, the sinews of the bear, the breath of the fish, and the spittle of the birds. The dwarves crafted a thin, fine chain called Gleipnir and assured the Aesir it could hold anything.
Fenrir was distrusting of the chain, it was such a thin chain compared to the other chains he had broken free from. Deep down, Tyr knew Fenrir was right to distrust it. But the Aesir cajoled the wolf, asking if he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to break free from such a little chain. Finally Fenrir agreed to let them bind him, but only if one of them put their hand in his mouth.
Naturally the Gods were hesitant, they did not want to lose a limb. So dutiful Tyr stepped forward. They needed to bind the wolf lest it cause damage and destruction to Asgard or even to Midgard. He put his hand in Fenrir’s mouth and the gods wrapped the chain around the wolf. Fenrir strained and struggled to break free.
“Tyr, pull your hand away!” Thor shouted.
But where was the honor in that? Tyr could have pulled his hand quickly from the beast’s mouth while he was distracted, straining against the bindings. But Tyr left his hand in the wolf’s mouth as he struggled to break free. Finally, realizing he couldn’t, he bit down on Tyr’s arm, severing his sword hand from it.
“Tyr, you had time!” Thor said, coming up to him. “You could have pulled your hand from his mouth!”
“An oath is an oath”, Tyr grunted out in pain, clutching his bloody stump of an arm.
“But this is a monster,” Thor pointed out. “Surely you do not need to keep an oath to a monster?!”
“An oath is an oath,” Tyr only repeated himself.
“Oaths are important to keep, no matter who you made them to,” Tyr then heard a female voice come from the crowd. His eyes fell upon Zisa, the daughter of Freyr and Freyja. She moved to him, ripping a scrap from her dress to bind around his arm. “Come, let’s get you to Eir,” she stated.
He was in love at that point. It didn’t take him long to ask Zisa to marry him, and she agreed.
Now Tyr spends his time either with Zisa or learning how to fight minus his sword arm. He’s heard rumors of Ragnarok, and he wants to be ready to fight with everyone else.
