Sol was born to Mundilfari and Glaur, the younger twin to her brother Mani. Oddly enough, they were born and grew into adulthood in the matter of a day. As Mundilfari was the Keeper of Time, he felt it was important for his children to also help with maintaining time. And so to Sol he gave her a golden chariot and a pair of horses named Árvakr(“early awake” and Alsviðr(“very quick”) with which to pull the sun about the realms to track the hours in a day. To protect her from being burnt by the sun, he gave her a shield called Svalin. Dellingr and Dagr were tasked to be Sol’s heralds, announcing the dawn and day and the coming of the sun.

She was so very beautiful, she caught the attention of Glaur, who asked to marry her. Soon the two were married, but Mundilfari had one stipulation… that it would not distract her from her sacred duty of carrying the sun across the skies. Glaur respected this, and only got to see his bride at night.

It didn’t take long, however, for the beautiful Goddess and the glowing sun’s movement across the sky to attract unwanted attentions, however. A Jotunn in Asgard asked the Aesir to give not only Freyja’s hand in marriage, but to also be given Sol and Mani in order to build a great wall for them. Luckily this did not come to pass, though it was close.

Worse attention was given, however, in the form of a wolf. Skoll, was his name. And he gave chase across the skies after Sol and the Sun with every intention of swallowing both. Several times he got close, and the sun grew dark in the sky as his maw tried to engulf it, but Sol cracked her whip and her horses bolted away just in time to escape. Still, Skoll was relentless in his pursuit… never giving up. And so, Sol is cursed with forever fleeing from the wolf that chases her.
