Hodr was born on the darkest night of the year, and would forever remain in darkness for he was born blind. He was the opposite of his brother, Baldr, the shining god. He was introverted and quiet, did not make friends as easily as his brother did, he often seemed to have a depressed and dour mood, and he certainly wasn’t charismatic. But he and his brother loved each other.

Hodr also loved Nanna. In fact, he was the first to fall in love with her, and wanted to ask her to marry him. However, Baldr, not knowing of his brother’s feelings, asked her first and she agreed. Hodr grew even more reserved and reclusive after that. Why would Nanna even want to be with a blind man? Of course she would choose Baldr!

It wasn’t until one evening Hodr heard Baldr and Hnoss in the act while pregnant Nanna was oblivious at her and Baldr’s home that Hodr let his resentment show. He confronted Baldr, not caring who was around, telling him that Nanna deserved better than that. Baldr sulked, and said he knew she did… it was just a moment of weakness and it would never happen again.

“It better not!” Hodr hissed back, the rage in him seething as he stormed off.

When his brother became immortal, all the gods had a grand time throwing things at him to test it out. They threw sticks and rocks first, and all laughed as they bounced off Baldr without so much as a scratch. Then they threw more dangerous things… knives and axes… Thor even threw his hammer at Baldr. Nothing could touch him.

“Would you like in on the fun?” Loki’s voice came from out of the darkness. “Here, I’ll help you aim this arrow at him.”

And so Loki gave Hodr a bow and arrow and helped him take aim. Hodr pulled the arrow back and then let it loose, laughter on his lips. But suddenly it went quiet. And then he could hear Frigg’s blood curdling scream. He knew then… his arrow struck true and it killed his brother. Hodr dropped the bow and ran.

It didn’t take long for Vali to find him and kill him. And the next thing he knew he was standing at the gates of Helheim along side Nanna and his brother. He apologized profusely to Baldr and Nanna, saying he just wanted to join in on the fun, and that Loki gave him the arrow and helped him take aim. He told Baldr and Nanna that if he had known, he never would have let loose the arrow. Baldr instantly forgave him. Nanna on the other hand did not, and that hurt Hodr greatly.

Hodr believes Hel is his punishment, and that it’s well deserved for what he had done to Baldr and Nanna. He would be content to stay in Helheim forever, if only Nanna would forgive him. But that would not be the case, for Ragnarok is just around the corner and Hodr, along with Baldr and Nanna would return to the land of the living.
