Ullr was born to Sif and a Jotunn Jarl named Beinviðr. For the first several years of his life he grew up in the cold mountains of Jotunheim. His mother was loving and nurturing, however his father was cold and dismissive towards him. Perhaps he thought it would make him stronger, and strive to gain his father’s approval?

In just one day everything changed, however. The mighty Aesir, Thor, came to visit their hall. At first he was a good guest and there was a tentative truce between the lone Aesir and Beinviðr’s men as they sat in the hall and discussed politics. But when Beinviðr lifted a hand against Sif, Thor immediately took up his two-handed hammer and began to fight. No man was left alive.

He then invited Sif to come live with him in Asgard. Of course, Sif would not leave her son, and so Ullr joined them. The Aesir were welcoming of them, and Ullr got along well with Thor’s other sons, Magni and Modi, who were a few years older than him. They often practiced their fighting skills together, and Magni and Modi were much stronger and more skilled in battle than Ullr.

After the birth of Thrud, his baby sister, Ullr asked at the dinner table to prove himself a man. Thor asked how he wanted to do this. Ullr suggested that he be allowed to go off into the Jotunheim mountains, alone, to live in the wild and hunt. He wanted to test his survival skills. Thor thought this was a good idea and agreed to let him do it. Sif of course was worried for him, as any mother would be, for there were many dangers in the mountains. She packed all his warmest gear, and plenty of food to last for a week, and fretted and fussed over him until he left.

Ullr found he quite liked the mountains. Although there were dangers, it was serene and peaceful, unlike the bustling of the city. After a month living out in the wilds on his own, he returned home a new man. He only came to visit though, as he had many little hunting shacks he had built up in the mountains and wished to return, perhaps to build himself an actual hall up there.

And indeed he did. While in the process of it, he met a Jotunn named Skadi, who was out hunting. The two became fast friends and hunting partners… and then eventually something more.
