Idunn was born to Jord by a dwarf named Ivald. Jord was a wild creature, however, who never raised any of her children. She usually left them with their fathers. However, there was one special case… Idunn. Rather than leave her with Ivald, she left the little girl in Asgard. Odin plucked the babe up and handed her off to a wetnurse to raise.

Idunn had her mother’s knack and talent with making things grow… particularly after the harsh winter when everything was dead. Odin saw this and put her in charge of the apple tree that bore golden fruit which the gods obtained their youth from. He gave to her one of Frigg’s magical boxes, one very similar to the one Fulla carried which contained Frigg’s shoes. Only in Idunn’s box she carried the golden apples which she would disperse amongst the gods.

Having unlimited access to this tree and it’s fruits at such a young age, Idunn never aged past the age of nineteen. Sometimes she would appear as if she was fourteen, but never older than nineteen.

Idunn was popular amongst the Aesir, for she kept them youthful(mostly, Odin and Frigg were the exceptions at times). Many people in Asgard sought her hand in marriage, and even those in other realms. But Idunn was young and free-spirited. She had no thoughts towards marriage. She only wanted to make things grow and take care of baby animals.

Winters were difficult for Idunn, however. She would fall into a depression, and no one could cheer her. That was, except for Bragi. He was older than she, by quite a bit… but his way with words was captivating. Surely many women, older and more mature than she would catch the Skald’s eye. She merely listened to his poetry and songs as a spectator, captivated as the rest.

Then one day Bragi asked her to marry him. Idunn couldn’t believe it. She squealed with delight and flung her arms about his neck shouting,”Yes!” The two were married shortly thereafter, and built a modest home near the great hall of Asgard’s capital, where Bragi frequently played his music.

One fateful day, however, Loki approached Idunn and told her of a tree that grew golden apples much larger and juicier than the ones she had. Idunn was intrigued and asked Loki to show her. He told her he did not have the apples with him, and said that he would show her the tree from which they grew. Idunn should have known the trickster was up to something diabolical, but she believed him and followed him out of the main city and into the forest.

When she began to complain of how far away this tree was, a great eagle suddenly swooped out of nowhere and plucked her up from the ground. Idunn nearly dropped the box of apples, but clung onto them for dear life as the wind tugged at her hair and dress. Finally the Eagle plopped her down and shifted into the form of the Jotunn Thjazi.

He proclaimed that she would be his bride, and give to the Jotunn the magical apples. Idunn, tears pricked in her eyes, shook her head fervently.

“No, I am married already”, she replied.

“Your marriage is null and void here in Jotunheim, sweetling. You are mine now”, Thjazi countered.

Still, Idunn refused. And so he locked her in a tower. It wasn’t long before a falcon came swooping in the window. It claimed to be Loki. “I know you distrust me, but you must trust me now, I am here to rescue you,” said he. “Let me take you back to Asgard.”

Whether it was her naivety to trust him again after he had so deceived her, or her wish to get out of that place… Idunn let the falcon take her in it’s talons. It flew back to Asgard, the Eagle Thjazi hot on it’s tail. The Aesir waited for Loki and Idunn to pass and then lit a great pyre which burned Thjazi to death, and Idunn was saved.

Idunn forgave Loki for his misdeeds, though knows her husband never will. She continues to live her charmed life feeding golden apples to the gods and rescuing baby animals, though still struggles during the winter.
