Saga’s early life was, by no means, glamorous. She was born out of the affair of Hymir and Gunnlod. Gunnlod was disowned by her father after she let Odin escape with the Mead of Poetry, and was left in squalor. She traveled to another city in Jotunheim and met Hymir, who thought she was younger and more fair than his wife. He doted upon her for her affections, which bought her a small ramshackle home. And when he went raiding he brought his riches to her rather than his wife.

Eventually Saga was born. But her parents held little care for her, as they only held affection for one another. Hymir, of course, had to return home to his wife and was an absentee father. Her mother raised her, but ignored her most of the time, instead focusing on using the riches Hymir gave her from raiding to improve her own wardrobe and appearance and standing. Saga’s only friend and comfort were the books or scrolls she happened to find(and sometimes steal).

The books and scrolls contained such wondrous stories that stole Saga away from her miserable life. She loved them with all her heart and could not get enough.

Then one day a man approached her. He said he was Hymir’s son, which made them siblings. Saga was a little skittish at first, but he seemed genuinely interested in her and asked about the book she was reading. She told him all about it, for she had read it a hundred times. Then he suggested she come live with him in Asgard. Saga was hesitant… she thought about her mother for a moment and wondered if she would miss her… if she would even notice that she was gone.

The man seemed to know what she was thinking. “They will not miss you,” he stated matter of factly. Saga knew it to be true. And then she remembered reading about Asgard in one of her stories. This was actually her chance to escape her wretched life and live a life in one of her stories. She agreed, and soon she and Tyr were on their way to Asgard.

She was introduced to Odin, who’s one eye fell upon the book she clutched and instantly seemed to light up. “Another intellect, I see!” exclaimed the one-eyed man. “Welcome to Asgard!”

Saga was granted her own hall filled with books at Sökkvabekkr, a bank near the river, so long as she promised to be the Aesir’s historian and storyteller. Saga agreed… and indeed the hall was so much finer than the little hovel she had lived in with her mother. Saga spent much of her time reading. Tyr would visit her often, but Odin visited her the most. Every day he would come to Sökkvabekkr, and the two would sit by the river and drink from it’s source from golden goblets. Odin would tell her of the various exploits of the Aesir, which Saga then turned into poems and stories.

She learned too that she had another half-brother, though this time by Gunnlod rather than Odin. His name was Bragi, and he too was a poet, but also a song writer and producer. The two became fast friends. It made Saga feel terrible, for it was Tyr who rescued her from her wretched life and brought her to Asgard, yet they didn’t seem to have much in common.

Saga spends her days in or around her hall reading or writing stories of the Aesir’s exploits to share with Odin and Bragi, who would sometimes turn her poems into songs. It is a quaint, charming life… but one she wouldn’t trade for anything else in all the nine realms.
