Mani was born to Mundilfari and Glaur, the older twin to his sister Sol. He did not have a childhood, as he was born and grew into adulthood within the day. Being that Mundilfari was the Keeper of Time, he felt it was important for his children to help keep track of the time. So, to Mani he gave the moon, with which mortals and all manner of beings could keep track of the months. Mani was tasked with taking the moon across the sky at night, in his chariot. Nott was tasked with heralding his arrival by darkening the sky and making it night.

On day, while taking the moon across the sky, Mani happened upon a man abusing his children. Mani could not stand it, and so he swooped down and plucked the little girl and boy up and took them along with him. The girl was named Bil, and the boy was named Hjuki.

It didn’t take long for the beautiful, moving moon to attract unwanted attention, however. A fierce wolf named Hati set his eyes upon the moon and gave chase with the intent to devour it, Mani, and the children. Distracting the children from the wolf by tasking them with the waning and waxing of the moon, Mani rushes his chariot across the skies in avoidance of Hati. However, there have been many times the wolf got close to swallowing them all whole. The moon would grow dark as his maw wrapped around them. But with a crack of his whip to the flanks of his horses, Mani always managed to get them out before his jaws would snap shut.

Of course, it is prophesized that during Ragnarok Hati will finally catch his prey.
