Bragi was born of deceit and an affair. Odin, in his quest to obtain the Mead of Poetry, disguised himself and seduced the Jotunn who guarded it for her father, Suttung. He tricked Suttung’s brother into helping him into the impregnable mountain, Hnitbjorg, where he happened upon Gunnlod guarding three vats. Then he disguised himself as a young, handsome and charming man.

Odin won her favor and secured a promise from her that, if he would sleep with her for three nights, she would grant him three sips of the mead. After the third night, Odin went to the mead, which was in three vats, and consumed the contents of each vat in a single draught. Odin then changed his shape into that of an eagle, and flew off toward Asgard with his prize. This was how Bragi was conceived.

Naturally, Gunnlod wanted nothing to do with Bragi, as he was a reminder of her shame for letting someone seduce her into giving him what she was meant to be guarding. So, she sent Bragi to Odin. Needless to say, Freyja, his wife at the time, was not happy about this. She did not want to raise the baby which resulted from her husbands afair(besides, she had her own two little girls to raise). And so Bragi grew up at the bosom of a wetnurse.

Bragi was unlike Odin’s other sons, he did not favor the sword and shield. But he did have a knack and talent with musical instruments. Oddly enough, Odin encouraged him with them. Bragi’s intellect and desire to learn led Odin to teach him the runes, which eventually Bragi carved into his tongue so that he could weave magical songs and poetry. And it worked! Whenever he began to sing or recite poetry, everyone listened and was entranced by his works.

His music was so entrancing that it got the attention of many females. Freyja, in particular, warmed up to him when he made odes to her beauty. But there was one young lady who caught his eye… Idunn. She was young and sweet and innocent and naive, and she loved to hear his music and poetry. She was much younger than he, so he figured that she had many other younger and more handsome male suitors. And indeed she did.

Finally, one day Bragi worked up the courage to ask her to marry him. He honestly didn’t think anything would come of it, as he had heard Idunn turned away other men with such ease and quickness they were left with their head spinning. But much to Bragi’s shock, she agreed.

The two were married and lived quite happily together in a sizable home near the great hall in Asgard.

Bragi was a good, faithful, and doting husband to his young wife. Where most men would have turned away all the baby animals she brought home to nurse to adulthood, Bragi encouraged her and helped her feed the little ones. Bragi never lifted a hand or said a word in anger towards his wife, for he too had a gentle soul that did not seem to possess anger.

But when it was learned that Loki helped in the abduction of his wife, Bragi was filled with rage and had words to say. Luckily Loki was able to return Idunn, but Bragi would never forgive him for what he had done. Idunn might, but Bragi could never.
