Alexandria was born on the moon Ganymede, which was part of the border planets. Her father was a mechanic and her mother owned a spare parts shop. She was the youngest of four children who were all named after great cities on Earth-that-was: Austin, London(who died at the age of twelve to venomous snake-bite), Rome(who died of illness in infancy), and then Alexandria.
Her father was a respected part of the community, and was also part of the Ganymede council. He was a part of a large group of people who were in talks with the Alliance to try to remedy the inadequacies between the Alliance Core and the border planets. Alex didn't really know much about any of that, only that when she was 12 a war broke out between the Alliance and the border planets, and her brother Austin went to fight. Her father worked in his shop putting ships together for the Independents, and rather than continuing to go to school Alex spent all her free time learning from and helping her father do this.
Alex had a natural knack for mechanics and fixing things, her father said. She absorbed absolutely everything he taught her. If he showed it to her once, she could turn around and do it flawlessly the next day. And it seemed that no matter what he put in front of her, she could figure out how to fix it all on her own, given enough time. For four years Alex worked along-side her father in his shop. That was, until her father was gunned down for a hefty reward from the Alliance.
Her mother didn't want her to continue putting ships together after that, but Alex refused to listen to her. Fixin' ships up was what she loved to do, and she wasn't going to let the Alliance take that away from her too. Besides, now she had a better understanding of the war between the Alliance and the Independents and she wanted to support the Independents in any way she could. Discreetly she continued to fix up ships brought to her father's shop by the Independents when they would bring them.
Her mother caught illness about 5 months later and succumbed to it, leaving the seventeen year old Alex all on her own. She buried herself in her work, not knowing whether her brother still lived or not, but hoping that he did.
Unfortunately the Independents lost the war about a half a year later. Alex continued to run both her parent's shops. Month after month went by with no word from Austin, and she began to assume the worst. Finally he showed up back home to find his baby sister had grown up into a young woman and that both their parents had died. Austin had changed, Alex could tell, but she wouldn't pry. Then one day he asked her about the old, broken and not flight-worthy space ship that had been sitting in their father’s shop ever since before she was born. It was one of their father’s many ‘projects’ that he acquired with good intent but never had the follow-through to finish, and Alex had been too busy working on things for the Independents to give it any thought or attention.
But now Austin was asking if she could fix it up and get it in decent working order. Alex jumped at the opportunity. She scowered her mother's spare parts shop for anything and everything she needed and got the ship working... for the most part. The electronics were still wonky and didn't work in some sections, but at least the ship could fly. And that's all Austin needed and wanted, for he had the intention of leaving and getting as far away from the Alliance as possible. Naturally Alex agreed to join him to help keep the ship in good working order.
Alex almost immediately developed a crush on her brother's wartime friend, who was now his First Mate, Jasper. But being that she had no girl friends to talk to about it, she kept it secret. That was, until Helaena joined the crew and became her friend. Helaena eventually encouraged Alex to express her feeling to Jasper. Alex would hint at her feelings, but Jasper always seemed oblivious to them. Finally Helaena told Alex that men weren't very smart and needed things plainly explained to them. So one day Alex kissed him. Jasper kissed her back, and it seemed as if things might finally grow between them, but he pulled himself stiffly back and apologized, saying he shouldn't have done that. Alex tried to tell him he had nothing to apologize for, but he said that she was his friend and Captain's sister... it was inappropriate, and would never happen again.
Alex's feelings were hurt by that, and she tried to hate him after that. But she just couldn't get rid of those feelings for Jasper, no matter what she did.
