Michael “Rem” Remington was born to a great war hero who had fought with the Alliance against the Horde, Commander Avery Remington. When the Horde threatened the Alliance's way of life, Avery had joined the war effort, and had played a major role in the Alliance's success. After the war, though the Alliance had wanted Avery to remain a part of their milita, the war hero refused, wanting nothing more than to return home to his wife, in a town just outside of the Alliance Territory.

Several years later, their son was born. Neither of his parents worked, having acquired a great deal of money from the war, and so they spent their time with Rem. He was homeschooled. His mother taught him how to read and write, and she instructed him with history, diplomacy, geography. His father taught him mathematics and politics. He also played strategic games with Rem from a very young age, so as to ingrain a strategic mind into his son, and when Rem was old enough his father would spar and train with him in various combat forms.

Despite the fact that his father was physically fit, and always aware of his surroundings, Rem's father was murdered when Rem was fourteen. At the time, Rem did not know who had killed his father, but he would soon learn that the man his mother married next had been the one to hire his father's murderer.

His mother was in a depression for many months after her husband had died. Avery's friend, from his days in the military had often come by to console her, and ensure that she was well taken care of. This man, Eugene, who was employed deep within the Alliance's government, had secretly coveted Avery's wife for many years, waiting for the opportune moment to claim her as his own.

It wasn't until three years later, after his family had moved into the core of the Alliance territory, and after his mother bore another son that Rem had learned this horrifying truth. His mother refused to believe Rem when he had finally confided in her what he had learned. For nearly a year he was at odds with his mother and especially his stepfather. Finally, he left home, unable to take it any longer, and moved to the town he had once lived in before, with his father.

Rem continued to study the subjects his father had taught him, on his own. He kept up on the politics, and when he learned of the Alliance's want to take some more of the Independent land for their own greed, he was sure that his father would not have agreed with such behavior. After all, his father had fought with the Alliance against the Horde for some of the very same reasons, but yet the Alliance was turning around and doing the same to the Independents, who were not as technologically advanced or organized.

At the age of nineteen, Rem moved further out, deeper into the Independent territories, and lived in small apartments. He soon joined the rebellion, determined that his father would have done the same. When he was twenty, he was part of a battalion led by Nathan Alloway, a man not much older than he, who quickly saw the potential that Rem had. For three years Rem fought beside Sergeant Alloway, acting as a second in command, and offering strategic advice.

The two formed a strong friendship. When they had lost their last battle, Nate had decided that he was going to become a mercenary, and had invited Rem to join, saying he needed a good First Mate that he could trust. Having nothing left for him elsewhere, Rem agreed.

When Nate introduced Rem to his younger sister, Surah, Rem was immediately intrigued by her. However, she was his Captain's sibling, and he was informed that she was to be a part of the crew. While it excited him that she would come with them, it also haunted him, for he wanted to be with her in every way possible, but he knew he could not be with his best friend's(and captain's) sister, let-alone a crew member. Perhaps it was his militaristic ways, but business and personal life were not to mingle, in his opinion.

Yet, over the years aboard the IAS Windrunner, Rem found himself opening up to Surah bit by little bit, forming a closer and closer bond of friendship. Surah wore her heart on her sleeve, he knew she had feelings for him as well, and yet out of respect for his friend, the captain, he refused to acknowledge his feelings for her, or hers for him. It was a daily struggle, but he managed well enough, until one day when both she and he were alone, the two shared a passionate kiss.

Torn between his want to continue to explore her and connect with her on a deeper level, and his thoughts on proper conduct with not only workmates but also friends' siblings, his logical and critical mind forced his heart to remain silent, and told her that it was a mistake, and that it would not happen again. He knew that it hurt her, and it had hurt him, but he was certain it was the best logical decision.

How long would it take for Rem to learn only a fool would look for logic in the chambers of the human heart. And, by then, would it be too late?

I'm certain our plan will work, Sir. There's no way the Alliance can outsmart their way out of this.

Surah
You're the Captain's sister, Surah. It was a mistake to kiss... I'm sorry.

I'm not sure I understand what these feelings are that you're talking about.
