Clementine Louise Fletcher was born one beautiful late spring day in Independence Missouri to James Fletcher, a dentist, and his wife Mary Ann Fletcher. She was their youngest of three, and their only daughter. During the days Clementine would go to school, after school she would help her ma with chores, and in the evenings her ma taught her how to mend clothing. Clementine took to sewing naturally, and loved it. Even though her family was well off and could afford to buy her dresses already made, Clementine yearned to learn how to make her own dresses. She wanted to express herself through her clothing.
At first it began with altering dresses she already owned. Then she began trying to make herself full dresses from patterns that her ma bought for her one Christmas. At first they were simple dresses, but as Clementine's skill grew her ma would buy her more advanced patterns, which Clementine made clothing for her whole family. There was nothing more Clementine loved than to see her ma, pa, or brothers wearing something she had made for them. Clementine would spend hours in Goode's Mercantile pouring over catalogues of patterns and fabrics.
It was one of these times that she caught the attention of Wyatt Goode, one of Mr.Goode's sons, who was about five years her senior. He was awkward and charming as he helped her with her order and look through their current stock of fabric. Just as she was leaving the store, Wyatt asked her if she would like to accompany him for a buggy ride around town that evening. Blushing, Clementine agreed. She wore her best dress and the two had a marvelous time.
The two continued to court. But eventually Mr.Goode sent Wyatt out west to start up a Goode's Mercantile out there. Clementine was heartbroken when she heard the news. Wyatt assured her that it was for the best, and that once he got settled in, he would send for her. Then he proposed to her to seal the promise. How Clementine's heart soared up from the depths!
For about a year and a half the two sent frequent correspondence back and forth. Clementine occupied her time with sewing, and became so quick and efficient at it that her family's wardrobes were overflowing. She then began sewing dresses for her friends, who'd pay her for the fabric and her time. By the time Wyatt asked her to come out to Prosperity she had saved up $100.
Prosperity was a growing, thriving town in the deserts of Wyoming. It was much different than Missouri. Clementine had, again, worn her best dress riding the train out there, but stepping off the train she suddenly felt over dressed. The women wore much more practical clothing out there, it seemed. Her family accompanied her out there to ensure she arrived safely, but also so they could see her get married. Wyatt's pa and several of his younger brothers also attended, as they were already there to help him finish setting up the new Goode's Mercantile in town. And many of the townsfolk, whom Wyatt had made friends with already, also came to their wedding. It was a whirlwind of major events, Clementine found herself to be glad once all their family returned to their homes, and it was just herself and her new husband.
Clementine made friends with the women of the town quickly, many of whom fawned over and admired the dresses she wore. When she told them she had made them herself, the women began asking her to make them something, offering to pay. Soon enough she had a list of people and projects.
Wyatt and Clementine lived in the upstairs of the Mercantile, and Wyatt noticed her sewing began taking up more and more space up there. He suggested to Clementine that before they work on their proper house, they add an extension onto the Mercantile, so that she could set up a shop of her own to sell clothes. As if this man weren't sweet enough already!
Clementine didn't mind living above the Mercantile, and so they tore down part of the mercantile wall and added another room to the store. Using the $100 she had saved up, Clementine bought bolts of fabric, buttons, and thread, and she bought clothing for people to buy right off the shelves, while she began to build up her own inventory. And so began The Mercantile Stitchery.
