Wyatt's pa owned a general store called "Goode's Mercantile" in Independence Missouri. It was a very lucrative business, and the family was quite well off. His ma stayed at home with all twelve children. Wyatt was the fourth eldest of the 12, and the third eldest male. All the children received schooling to learn to read and write and do math, and after school all of the male children helped their pa in the general store. When he was younger Wyatt would help out by cleaning and stocking the general store. When he got older he was entrusted with helping customers, and then eventually handling the money.
This was when he met the prettiest girl he ever laid eyes on, Clementine Fletcher. He'd remembered her from school, but since he had been out of school he hadn't seen her(she was five years younger than him). He hardly recognized her, she had grown from a girl into such a fine young woman. She was looking for fabric, and Wyatt fumbled over the stock trying to help her find just the right fabric for a dress she was making. Ringing her up he did the math wrong, and counted the change wrong, and fumbled over his words. Wyatt was an absolute mess. But just as she was leaving, he managed to work up the courage to ask her to go on a buggy ride around town with him later. She agreed. From that point on, the couple were courting.
But, just as his pa did with his elder brothers, Wyatt was sent out westward to set up a Goode's Mercantile in one of the towns along the tracks. He wanted Goode's Mercantile spread all across the country. Wyatt didn't want to leave Clementine, but he knew his pa was right and that he needed to make something for himself. Promising to send for Clementine when he got settled, the two parted ways, and Wyatt headed westward, stopping to visit his older brothers along the way.
Finally he got to a town called Prosperity, where the general store was quite small, old, and run down. Wyatt felt bad moving into the town and building a bigger and nicer general store, but the old general store was being managed by an elderly man who could barely see any more and wasn't much longer for this world. Truthfully he needed to retire, and that he did when Wyatt opened Goode's Mercantile.
Goode's Mercantile took just over a year to make, as it was a brick and mortar building rather than wood, and the supplies to build it needed to be shipped in from the east. But, Wyatt's pa had a vision, and would spare no expense to expand Goode's Mercantile and create an empire with his sons. In the meantime, Wyatt lived in a very tiny, one room shack and got to know the townsfolk. Finally, when the building was finished, Wyatt sent a telegraph to his pa, who came out with several of his younger brothers to help him set up shop. It was a process that took about a month. Then Goode's Mercantile was finally open for business.
Wyatt, all this time, had been sending letters back and forth with Clementine. Now that his shop was done, there were a couple rooms upstairs that he and Clementine could live in together, at least until they could manage to build a proper house. So he sent for her and she came out to Prosperity. The two were promptly married.
Life couldn't be better for Wyatt, he married the woman of his dreams, started his own business, and was doing rather well for himself. The town of Prosperity really lived up to it's name.
